Joe is a lingerie designer. When we first meet him, he has just terminated his engagement to Delysia's friend, Edythe Dubarry. Delysia dates Phil Goldman in the hopes that he will get her the lead in a West End play. Nick Calderelli is the owner of the night club where Delysia performs and he owns the flat she calls home, so she dates him for financial security. Michael Pardue is a destitute piano player who is madly in love with Delysia, but has nothing to offer her financially.

Delysia claims that she appeared in "Every Day's a Holiday" with Mae West. She says she was "in the restaurant scene, in the back, behind the palm tree drinking a margarita". She then suggests that the scene was cut for European prints.

Delysia also claims to have had a role in "Four's a Crowd" with Errol Flynn and Olivia de Havilland. When Miss Pettigrew asks her what role she played, Delysia snaps back, "the crowd".

Delysia brags about Miss Pettigrew to Edythe while they're at the lingerie show. However, Miss Pettigrew was never a social secretary and Edythe didn't buy Delysia's story for a second.

Michael tells a story about the romantic marriage proposal he had planned for Delysia. He arranged for a private boat on the Thames and some champagne. When Delysia didn't show after an hour and a half of waiting, Michael drank the champagne. He happened to float by the Tower of London just as he was thinking about how insufficient the engagement ring he purchased for Delysia was. So, in his drunken state, Michael thought it reasonable to procure a better gem for Delysia at the Tower.

Naturally, the Guard didn't think too highly of his scheme and Michael was arrested.

The younger guests look on in fascination as the planes fly overhead. Miss Pettigrew and Joe look at each other with grim understanding and she says, "They don't remember the first one."

Nick owns the club, Delysia sings there, and Michael plays the piano. The name is repeated several times throughout the movie. Delysia tells her driver to take her to The Scarlet Peacock. Nick mentions the name on stage when he welcomes everyone to the club. There is also large, red peacock-shaped light on the wall of the club.

During an air raid drill, Miss Pettigrew explains to Delysia: "Listen to me. Once I too had ambitions. Not your grand ones - simple ambitions. Marriage, children and a house of our own. He died in the mud in France. A good, solid man. You would call him dull, no doubt, but he smiled whenever he saw me and we could've built a life on that."
