Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Set in 1971, homeowners find that their family has moved into a haunted house, so they call in paranormal investigators.

Answer: The Conjuring

Released in 2013, "The Conjuring" received surprising rave reviews for its unflinching horror and clever takes on what many would consider to be a highly-saturated, gimmicky subgenre. Directed by James Wan (creator of "Saw"), the movie chronicled an early case of real-life paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren, who visited the Perron Family in Rhode Island in 1917 to investigate the goings-on at their new farmhouse.

The couple is also known for investigating the actual 'Amityville Horror' situation responsible for that haunted house film series.
2. Spurred by an eccentric uncle's will, a family moves into a home made of unique glass walls.

Answer: Thirteen Ghosts

A remake of a William Castle classic, the 2001 remake of "13 Ghosts" (billed as "THIR13EN Ghosts" because why not) sent Tony Shaloub, his two kids (one played by a then-adult Shannon Elizabeth), and their nanny to an inherited property made of rune-covered glass walls, each of which served to contain the thirteen spooky and murderous ghosts inside. Hijinx ensued, naturally, as the ghosts were let loose to perform a ritual sacrifice. Typical inheritance stuff.
3. A group is invited to a soiree with the chance to become millionaires but are locked inside a former asylum.

Answer: The House on Haunted Hill

Based on another William Castle classic, this 1999 horror film combined the joys of owning a haunted house made from a converted insane asylum with the terrors of an ill-advised, million-dollar amusement park scheme. Geoffrey Rush served as an eccentric mogul who convinced a small group of people to try and spend one night in the establishment for a million dollars and, as ghosts tend to do, the killings began.

A direct-to-DVD sequel, "Return to House on Haunted Hill", was released in 2007.
4. Karen makes an enormous error by caring for someone with a Japanese rage curse.

Answer: The Grudge

Karen, played by Sarah Michelle Gellar, somewhat stumbles into the Ju-On curse found in the 2004 film "The Grudge" in which a murder creates a curse that proliferates through potential victims, killing everyone who comes into contact with it in violent ways. Karen's attachment to the curse continues into "The Grudge 2" at which point her sister (Amber Tamblyn) gets wrapped up in it, and though it begins in a Tokyo house, it spreads to the United States in "The Grudge 2" and the 2020 reboot (also called "The Grudge").
5. Automatic holograms designed to spook haunted house guests go on the fritz when a ghost takes over the machine.

Answer: Dark House

In this case, the holograms themselves, created by a computer program and a series of fixtures installed in a former murder house, take on a certain tangibility to be able to kill actors and guests. Made for Fangoria Frightfest, this 2009 horror movie comes to be when the ghost of the evil Janet Darrode manages to infiltrate a computer and use it to do her bidding. Only the girl who got away from her murder spree (who, coincidentally, is an actress in the haunted house attraction it's become) can try and stop her.
6. The Crain empire's prestige remains behind as a group of clinical trial patients are examined for their reactions to fear.

Answer: The Haunting

Directed by Jan de Bont and based on Shirley Jackson's "The Haunting of Hill House", "The Haunting" starred A-listers like Catherine Zeta-Zones and Liam Neeson and extrapolated on the original's psychological horrors. The movie was poorly received, mainly for its poor story about, yeah, a haunted house, but also some sort of psych test and a haunted lineage? The original, made in the UK in 1963, has since become a subtle horror classic.
7. The Dolphin Hotel becomes Mike Enslin's personal Hell on Earth when he chooses not to heed warnings of the paranormal.

Answer: 1408

Based on a Stephen King short story (from "Everything's Eventual"), "1408" stars John Cusack and Samuel L. Jackson, the former as Mike Enslin, a writer who investigates paranormal places in an effort to debunk the mysteries around their histories. When he reaches room 1408 of the Dolphin Hotel, it turns out that it's one place that he was direly wrong to doubt.

It would become one of the highest-grossing King adaptations to date.
8. There aren't any answers when Katie finds that it's she, and not the house, that's haunted.

Answer: Paranormal Activity

A hit for independent horror films upon its 2007 festival release, "Paranormal Activity" grew from word of mouth to become one of the most profitable horror franchises ever made. The original movie, filmed entirely on handicam, helped relaunch a subgenre of horror (found-footage) as it followed young couple Katie and Micah while some sort of unknown force intensified its powers and haunted their home.
9. A mother moves her family into an old house but ends up playing a frightening game of hide and seek with the spirits therein.

Answer: The Orphanage

This Spanish-language horror film starring Belén Rueda was produced by Guillermo Del Toro and received high critical praise for avoiding derivative scares, producing an emotional story of a woman who moves her family to her old home in an effort to open an orphanage.

When her son goes missing, she finds herself haunted by the ghosts of the creepy building she called her home. Director J. A. Bayona would later find success in Hollywood, being asked to direct "Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom".
10. Carol-Anne communicates with spirits from the other side while her family searches for her on the other side of the TV.

Answer: Poltergeist

The 1982 film "Poltergeist" is a horror classic that follows the Freeling family as their patriarch (played by Craig T. Nelson) acts as a real estate agent for a new subdivision. Living in one of the houses, the Freelings soon start to experience supernatural occurrences, especially their youngest daughter, Carol-Anne, who speaks to someone within the static of the family TV.

The film resulted in two sequels and, in 2015, a complete reboot.
