Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the movie 'Casablanca', what is Victor Laszlo's nationality?

Answer: Czech

Much of the action in 'Casablanca' takes place in 'Rick's Café Américain' during WWII. Louis tells Rick of the imminent arrival in Casablanca of Viktor Laszlo, a famous Czech nationalist, and warns him not to afford him any assistance in leaving the city. Laszlo is the husband of Ilsa Lund, with whom Rick had a romantic relationship when they were both in Paris earlier in the war. Rick is in possession of the letters of transit that Viktor and Ilsa need to enable them to travel to Portugal and from there to the US.

The movie depicts a Rick torn between his love for Ilsa and his recognition of Viktor's need to escape Vichy-held Casablanca in order to continue his resistance work against the Nazi regime. The fact that Viktor is Czech comes out in the film during a conversation between him and Major Strasser: "I'm sure you'll excuse me if I am not gracious, but you see, Major, I'm a Czechoslovakian."
2. At the beginning of 'The Bourne Identity', Italian fisherman rescue an unconscious Bourne from the Mediterranean Sea and put him ashore. What country (after Italy) is his first destination?

Answer: Switzerland

The fishermen rescue Bourne from the sea off the coast of Italy, and engineer Giancarlo tends to his gunshot wounds. He also finds a small plastic tube under the skin of his hip containing the number of a bank account at the Gemeinschaft Bank, Zurich.

When the fishermen put Bourne ashore, Giancarlo gives him some money, saying, "It's not much, but it should get you to Switzerland." And thus begins his action-packed journey to discover his lost identity and evade his pursuers.
3. What is the name of the rabbit who is the chief protagonist in the film 'Watership Down'?

Answer: Hazel

Hazel and his psychic brother Fiver leave the endangered Sandleford warren in the company of nine other rabbits and set out in search of a new home. They eventually arrive at Watership Down, which coincides perfectly with Fiver's vision of the haven for which they are searching, but there are no female rabbits to ensure the continuity of the new warren.

They befriend a black-headed gull named Kehaar, who surveys the local area for them and identifies does to populate the warren and ensure its survival into the future.
4. Which role did Simon Callow play in 'Four Weddings and a Funeral'?

Answer: Gareth

Gareth dies unexpectedly of a heart attack at the wedding of Carrie and Hamish. Angus marries Laura in the first wedding. Bernard marries Lydia in the second wedding. Matthew is Gareth's partner who reads W H Auden's 'Funeral Blues' at the latter's funeral.
5. In 'Out of Africa', what is the Christian name of the narrator who looks back on her experiences in Africa?

Answer: Karen

Karen von Blixen, played by Meryl Streep, is a wealthy Danish woman who comes to British East Africa (now Kenya) in 1913 and marries Baron Bror von Blixen, the brother of her Swedish lover by whom she has been jilted. They eventually get divorced and she develops a relationship with Denys Finch Hatton, played by Robert Redford.

The film is loosely based on the book 'Out of Africa', written by Isak Dinesen, this being the pseudonym of author Karen von Blixen.
6. In the film 'Dr Zhivago', what is the name of Yuri's wife?

Answer: Tonya

The epic film 'Dr Zhivago' is based on the book of the same name written by Boris Pasternak. Yuri meets Tonya while he is studying medicine at Moscow. They marry and have a son by the name of Sasha. Yuri later falls in love with Lara and they spend several months together, before circumstances force them to part.

At the end of the film, Yuri is back in Moscow and spots Lara in the street from the tram he is riding. He gets off at the next stop, but while he is running to catch up with her, he suffers a fatal heart attack.
7. You probably recall who played Charlie Allnut and Rose Sayer in 'The African Queen', but do you remember who played Rose's brother, Samuel? (Hint: He played Uncle Arthur in 'When Eight Bells Toll' and Lord Rawnsley in 'Those Magnificent Men in their Flying Machines'.)

Answer: Robert Morley

'The African Queen' starred Humphrey Bogart as Charlie Allnut, Katharine Hepburn as Rose Sayer and Robert Morley as her brother, the Reverend Samuel Sayer. Samuel and Rose are missionaries in German East Africa at the outbreak of WWI. The Germans burn down the mission village and beat up Samuel, who later becomes delirious with fever and dies.

After burying him, Charlie and Rose leave on his boat, called the African Queen. Rose's plan is to convert the African Queen into a torpedo boat and sink the Königen Luise, a German patrol boat on a large lake further down the river.

They face various extreme obstacles on their way downriver - a German fortress, rapids, leeches - but their plan finally succeeds, even if not quite in the way envisaged. Robert Adolph Wilton Morley (1908-1992) was an English stage and film actor, who appeared in 'Major Barbara', 'Around the World in 80 Days' and 'The Alphabet Murders', to name but a few.
8. In the film 'All the President's Men', who plays Washington Post reporter Carl Bernstein? (Hint: He also had a starring role in 'Kramer vs Kramer'.)

Answer: Dustin Hoffman

'All the President's Men' tells the story of the Watergate Scandal, which eventually led to the resignation of Richard Nixon. All four actors had leading roles in the film: Robert Redford as Bob Woodward, Jack Warden as Harry Rosenfeld, Martin Balsam as Howard Simons and Dustin Hoffman as Carl Bernstein.
Dustin Hofmann (born 1937) is an American actor and director, whose films include 'The Graduate', 'Midnight Cowboy', 'Tootsie' and 'Rainman'.
9. In the song 'Cabaret' from the film of the same name, what is the name of the friend to whom Sally refers when she sings, 'As a matter of fact she rented by the hour'?

Answer: Elsie

'Cabaret' is a musical that takes place in Berlin in 1931 with the backdrop of the inexorable growth in power of the Nazi party. It stars Liza Minelli as Sally Bowles, Michael York as Brian Roberts and Joel Gray as the emcee who provides an ongoing commentary on the issues of Naziism and antisemitism. The lines in question are:
'I used to have this girlfriend known as Elsie
With whom I shared four sordid rooms in Chelsea
She wasn't what you'd call a blushing flower
As a matter of fact she rented by the hour'
These lines are in the song 'Cabaret', which is sung by Sally in the Kit Kat Club towards the end of the film.
10. 'La Vie en Rose' is a biographical musical based on the life of French songstress Edith Piaf. What is the occupation of Marcel Cerdan, with whom Edith falls in love?

Answer: Boxer

Marcel succeeds in becoming the World Middleweight Champion, but is tragically killed in a plane crash while traveling, at Edith's behest, from Paris to New York to be with her. Edith never really recovers from the loss of the love of her life and enters a downward spiral of drug and alcohol abuse.
