Based on Richard Llewellyn's 1939 novel, the film reflects on the difficulties experienced by miners employed in the South Wales coalfields. The film focuses particularly on the Morgan family, who endure strikes and tragic accidents whilst working in the mine. Running parallel to this are various love affairs which do not run smoothly. Roddy McDowall portrayed Huw, the youngest child in the family, whilst Maureen O'Hara starred as his sister Angharad.

Maureen O'Hara was born in Dublin in 1920, living to the age of 95 when she died in Idaho. Her screen debut was in the 1938 British musical comedy "Kicking the Moon Around", a film in which she was given just one spoken line.
2. Fried Green Tomatoes (1991)

This American comedy-drama, directed by Jon Avnet, involves two separate friendships from different time periods. Firstly during the Depression years, with Mary Stuart Masterson and Mary-Louise Parker cast as Ruth and Idgie, and also during the 1980s with Kathy Bates and Jessica Tandy starring as Evelyn Couch and Ninny Threadgoode.

Kathy Bates was born in Memphis, Tennessee in 1948. Her screen debut was in 1971 in the American comedy film "Taking Off", when she appeared as an audition singer, credited as Bobo Bates.
3. The Green Hornet (2011)

The superhero in this comedy adventure movie was first encountered in a series of radio programs in the 1930s. Seth Rogen starred in the title role of the movie whilst Jay Chou was cast as Kato, a martial arts expert and Green Hornet's assistant. Cameron Diaz also starred as Lenore Case, secretary to Rogen in his parallel role as Britt Reid, publisher of the Los Angeles Daily Sentinel.

Seth Rogen was born in Vancouver, British Columbia in 1982. During his teenage years his career began performing stand-up comedy. His screen debut was in the 2001 American science fiction film "Donnie Darko" when he was cast as Ricky Danforth.
4. The Corn Is Green (1945)

Another film set in a Welsh coal mining town. Bette Davis starred as Lily Cristobel Moffatt, a schoolteacher whose aim is to provide improved levels of education to an area previously deprived of such facilities. The character she portrayed was a woman in her fifties. At the time Bette Davis was just thirty-six, so out of necessity wore a grey wig and considerable padding to fit the bill.

Bette Davis was born in Lowell, Massachusetts in 1908. Her screen debut was in the 1931 drama "Bad Sister" cast as Laura Madison the younger sister of Marianne Madison who was portrayed by Sidney Fox. In 1962, following her appearance in "What Ever Happened to Baby Jane?" she became the first person to be nominated for ten Academy Awards.
5. The Green Mile (1999)

Answer: Tom Hanks

This crime movie was adapted from an earlier novel by Stephen King. Tom Hanks starred as Paul Edgecomb, a prison officer who worked in death row during the Great Depression of the 1930s. Edgecomb was also portrayed by Dabbs Greer in later life in 1999, where he is then resident in a care home. The movie flashes back and forth between the two time frames, telling the story of the events he witnessed during his time as a prison officer.

Tom Hanks was born in Concord, California in 1956. His screen debut was in 1980 in the American slasher film "He Knows You're Alone". Since then he has starred in numerous box office hits including "Splash" in 1984, "Sleepless in Seattle" in 1993, "You've Got Mail" in 1998 and "Saving Mr. Banks" in 2013.

He received Academy Awards for Best Actor in both "Philadelphia" in 1993 and "Forrest Gump" in 1994.
6. The Odd Life of Timothy Green (2012)

Answer: Jennifer Garner

In this American fantasy film produced by Walt Disney Pictures, Jennifer Garner starred as Cindy Green opposite her film husband Joel Edgerton. CJ Adams who was cast in the title role, was awarded a Young Artist Award for Best Performance in a Feature Film.

Jennifer Garner was born in Houston, Texas in 1972. Her career took off when cast as CIA officer Sydney Bristow in the ABC thriller "Alias" from 2001-2006. Films that followed included "Juno" in 2007, "The Invention of Lying" in 2009, "Miracles from Heaven" in 2016 and "Love, Simon" in 2018.
7. Soylent Green (1973)

Charlton Heston starred as Detective Frank Thorn in this dystopian thriller, investigating the murder of a wealthy businessman. The film also centred on a dystopian future caused by extreme industrialization - leading to pollution, overpopulation and insufficient resources. The film was the winner of the Saturn Award for Best Science Fiction Film in 1973.

Charlton Heston was born in Wilmette, Illinois in 1923. In 1941, when just 17 years old, he appeared in the title role of "Peer Gynt" a low budget silent film. Throughout a lengthy career he then appeared in almost 100 films, in many of them as leading actor. He starred in "The Ten Commandments" in 1956, "Ben-Hur" in 1959, "El Cid in 1961" and "Planet of the Apes" in 1968 to name just a few.
8. The Woman in Green (1945)

Answer: Basil Rathbone

This American film starred Basil Rathbone as Sherlock Holmes, and was based on stories previously written by and published on behalf of Arthur Conan Doyle. Nigel Bruce was cast as his friend and assistant Dr. Watson, whilst Hillary Brooke portrayed Lydia Marlowe, the woman in the titled role. The role of Holmes' nemesis, criminal mastermind Professor James Moriarty, was filled by Henry Daniell.

Basil Rathbone was born in Johannesburg, South Africa in 1892. His early career consisted mainly of performances as a Shakespearean stage actor in the United Kingdom. He portrayed many villains in his career, but is best remembered for starring as Sherlock Holmes in fourteen Hollywood films between 1939 and 1946.
9. Green Dragon (2001)

Answer: Patrick Swayze

In this film, Patrick Swayze starred as Gunnery Sergeant Jim Lance, in a camp set up in the United States for Vietnamese refugees following the end of the war in their country. The film homes in on the difficulties these refugees initially face in adapting to alien surroundings, and portrays resultant relationships that develop between those living in and those commanding the camp. Forest Whitaker also took a prominent role in the film as Addie, the camp's cook.

Patrick Swayze was born in Houston, Texas in 1952. His film debut was in 1979 when he appeared as Ace Johnson in the 1979 American comedy "Skatetown, U.S.A.". Then for his roles in "Dirty Dancing" in 1987, "Ghost" in 1990 and "To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar" in 1995, he received Golden Globe Award nominations.

He was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2008 and died in September 2009 at the age of 57, 20 months after the cancer diagnosis.
10. The Green Berets (1968)

Answer: John Wayne

John Wayne starred as Col Mike Kirby in this war film set in Vietnam. The film was also co-directed by Wayne, who was somewhat disturbed with the anti-war climate that had developed in the United States the longer the war continued, and he wished to illustrate the necessity to continue with the offensive. Whilst the film received mainly negative reviews from the press, and encountered numerous public protests, it was commercially successful.

John Wayne was born as Marion Robert Morrison, in Winterset, Iowa in 1907. Few actors have starred in as many films as John Wayne, a total of 142 films including 83 Westerns. In the 1969 Western "True Grit" he earned an Academy Award for his portrayal of U.S. Marshal Rooster Cogburn.
