Movies I Don't Want In My Collection Quiz

Some of these movies are good, but are far too powerful to watch more than once. As for the rest of them, well let's just say that I didn't find them to be very entertaining at all! This quiz contains a mixture of older and newer movies.

Question 1 of 15
1. (2002) After his wife is killed in a freak accident, Graham Hess' faith is shaken to the point that he can't continue to serve as the community's minister. When 500 foot crop circles appear in fields all over the world, including on his own farm, his faith is tested even further.

Answer: (One Word, 5 letters)
Question 2 of 15
2. (1984) Imagine waking up one morning and finding that WWIII had started, and right in your own backyard. An interesting premise, but one that falls apart when the viewer is expected to believe that a team of teenagers, led by Patrick Swayze, provided the resistance that turned the tide and sent the communist invasion force running home. Hint

Question 3 of 15
3. (2002) Poor Warren, played by Jack Nicholson, is having a hard time. He's forced to retire, his daughter is marrying someone he doesn't think is good enough for her, and his wife dies. It's hard for a man to handle that much change, so he takes a cross-country trip, to try to figure out when everything started to go so wrong. Hint

Question 4 of 15
4. (1959) This biblical epic starred Charlton Heston as a Jewish prince who was betrayed, and sent into slavery by his Roman friend. The climatic chariot race resulted in several horses being literally run to death, which is why this movie is on my banned list. Hint

Question 5 of 15
5. (2001) Frank Fowler, the only child of Ruth and Matt, worries his parents when he falls for Natalie, an older woman with 2 kids and a controlling ex-husband. But when that ex kills Frank in a jealous rage, they take the law into their own hands to exact their revenge. Hint

Question 6 of 15
6. (1996) Jerry needs money, and he needs it badly. His wife's father has lots of money but he's not about to share any with Jerry. So Jerry hits upon the brilliant idea of having his wife kidnapped and demanding a ransom from her father. Unfortunately he hires a couple of losers to do the deed, and people start getting killed, including a police officer. Hint

Question 7 of 15
7. (1979) Ridley Scott directed this futuristic movie about a mining ship in deep space that responds to a distress call, causing them to land on distant planet. When they get there, they find that it was a warning signal, not a distress call, but it's too late for them because they've already brought the danger on ship with them, incubating in the belly of one of the crew.

Answer: (One Word, 5 letters)
Question 8 of 15
8. (1999) In October of 1994 three student filmakers disappeared while making a documentary film about a local legend in the woods of Maryland. One year later the footage that they shot turned up. At least that's how this film was promoted. The three principal actors did shoot most of the footage, and were given very little script or foreknowledge of what was going to happen, so all dialogue was improvised. Hint

Question 9 of 15
9. (1982) This incredible movie stars Meryl Streep as a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, and Kevin Kline as the slightly damaged, Holocaust-obsessed young man that she hooks up with. Alan J. Pakula directed. Hint

Question 10 of 15
10. (1996) Tim Burton directed this all-star spoof of the invasion of Earth by little aliens with twisted senses of humour and incredibly nasty weapons. The movie was intended to be campy, but came off as far too slapsticky for my tastes. Hint

Question 11 of 15
11. (1979) This Viet Nam movie, directed by Francis Ford Coppola, was based on Joseph Conrad's 'Heart of Darkness'. It's the story of a renegade Green Beret, played by Marlon Brando, who has set himself up as a kind of a god in the jungle, and the man, played by Martin Sheen, who is sent to kill him. Hint

Question 12 of 15
12. (2002) The suave, debonair spy travels back in time to rescue his kidnapped father and defeat the bad guy, in the third movie of this Jay Roach trilogy. Hint

Question 13 of 15
13. (1994) This whimsical movie, about a slightly challenged young man who just happened to be present at many historically important events, won 6 Oscars, including Best Actor for Tom Hanks in the title role. So obviously not very many people agreed with me when I found it maybe just a tad too whimsical.

Answer: (Two Words, 7 & 4 letters)
Question 14 of 15
14. (1999) Clint Eastwood stars as a journalist whose fondness for alcohol and women has trapped him in a small time job. When a colleague is killed in a car crash, he is given the last minute job of covering an upcoming execution. Amazingly enough, a few hours is all he needs to prove the innocence of the convicted man, and prevent a gross miscarriage of justice. Hint

Question 15 of 15
15. (1998) Ted has carried a torch for his high school sweetheart for 13 years, so much so that he hires a private investigator to track her down. But the P.I. falls in love with her too, and of course they're not the only ones vying for her attention. Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (2002) After his wife is killed in a freak accident, Graham Hess' faith is shaken to the point that he can't continue to serve as the community's minister. When 500 foot crop circles appear in fields all over the world, including on his own farm, his faith is tested even further.

Answer: Signs

There were some terrific scenes in this M. Night Shyamalan film, but there were also long periods where little happened, and I found myself fidgeting with boredom. Mel Gibson was wonderful in a role that was turned down by both Paul Newman and Clint Eastwood.

The stories that Gibson's character told his children about their birth were the real-life birth stories of Shyamalan's own children.

Answer: Red Dawn

This John Milius film earned itself a place in the 'Guiness Book of Records' for the movie with the most acts of violence of any film, up to that point, although I'm sure it has since been outdone. The cast was put through 8 weeks of intensive military training, in preparation for filming.

Answer: About Schmidt

This movie had some very funny moments, but also suffered from too many long stretches where the camera focused on Nicholson's vacant, almost drooling face. Kathy Bates was hysterical as Nicholson's future in-law. The production crew established a scholarship for Abdullah Mtulu, the child whose picture was used to represent the foster child Schmidt sponsored.
4. (1959) This biblical epic starred Charlton Heston as a Jewish prince who was betrayed, and sent into slavery by his Roman friend. The climatic chariot race resulted in several horses being literally run to death, which is why this movie is on my banned list.

Answer: Ben Hur

William Wyler directed this first movie ever to win 11 Academy Awards. The film actually saved MGM Studios from bankruptcy. Burt Lancaster and Rock Hudson both turned down the lead role.
5. (2001) Frank Fowler, the only child of Ruth and Matt, worries his parents when he falls for Natalie, an older woman with 2 kids and a controlling ex-husband. But when that ex kills Frank in a jealous rage, they take the law into their own hands to exact their revenge.

Answer: In the Bedroom

Todd Field directed Sissy Spacek, Tom Wilkinson, Nick Stahl and Marisa Tomei in this movie that could have been so much more than it was. I found the premise to be awesome, but the pace to be ponderous. Given the fact that it was nominated for 5 Academy Awards, including Best Picture, I do realize that not everyone agrees with me.

Answer: Fargo

It's been so long since I saw this Coen Brothers' film that I can't quite remember why I disliked it so much. I do remember it had something to do with pace, and the casualness with which very gruesome murder scenes were approached. This movie was not based on a true story, even though it claimed to be.

Answer: Alien

Sigourney Weaver, Tom Skerritt and John Hurt starred in this movie full of cheap tricks involving building music, and a cat. It got to the point where you could predict exactly when the alien was going to appear because it was always preceeded by a minor scare with the cat. You couldn't stop yourself from jumping though, because of the loud noises that always accompanied the alien attack.

The eerie, misty scene when the eggs were discovered was accomplished with the use of a pulsing laser and smoke machine, equipment that was borrowed from the group The Who.

Answer: The Blair Witch Project

Daniel Myrick and Eduardo Sanchez directed this film that made it into 'The Guinness Book of Records' for 'Top Budget/Box Office Ratio'. It cost only $22,000 to make and yielded $240.5 million which resulted in a ratio of $10,931 made for every $1.00 spent. Many people experienced motion sickness because of the hand-held cameras that were used.
9. (1982) This incredible movie stars Meryl Streep as a survivor of a Nazi concentration camp, and Kevin Kline as the slightly damaged, Holocaust-obsessed young man that she hooks up with. Alan J. Pakula directed.

Answer: Sophie's Choice

It is not until very near the end of the movie that we find out what 'Sophie's Choice' was. She had to choose which of her children was given a shot at living, and which would be gassed. Now that I am the mother of two, I will never be able to watch this movie again, as magnificent as it is. Apparently Meryl Streep literally begged on hands and knees for this part, for which she learned both how to speak German, and how to speak English with a Polish accent.
10. (1996) Tim Burton directed this all-star spoof of the invasion of Earth by little aliens with twisted senses of humour and incredibly nasty weapons. The movie was intended to be campy, but came off as far too slapsticky for my tastes.

Answer: Mars Attacks!

The cast included Jack Nicholson, Glenn Close, Annette Bening, Pierce Brosnan, Danny DeVito, Martin Short, Tom Jones and Michael J. Fox, to name a few. When the Martians vapourized people's flesh, their remaining skeletons were seen as being either green or red. This was done because the movie was originally intended to be released at Christmas time.

Answer: Apocalypse Now

Coppola lost 110 pounds while filming the 200 hours of footage that took him nearly three years to edit into the movie we know today. I have to admit to never having seen the film, because the scene where the cow was slaughtered was real.
12. (2002) The suave, debonair spy travels back in time to rescue his kidnapped father and defeat the bad guy, in the third movie of this Jay Roach trilogy.

Answer: Austin Powers in Goldmember

Mike Myers, Beyonce Knowles, Michael York and Michael Caine starred in this cameo-filled film. Sean Connery was considered for the part of Nigel Powers. Maybe I'm just an old stick-in-the-mud, but this movie was just too campy, too slapsticky, and just plain too silly for my tastes.
13. (1994) This whimsical movie, about a slightly challenged young man who just happened to be present at many historically important events, won 6 Oscars, including Best Actor for Tom Hanks in the title role. So obviously not very many people agreed with me when I found it maybe just a tad too whimsical.

Answer: Forrest Gump

Robert Zemeckis directed, after Terry Gilliam turned down the opportunity. To achieve the look of a double amputee, Gary Sinise's lower legs were wrapped in a special blue blanket, which allowed them to be removed by computer.

Answer: True Crime

Clint Eastwood directed himself in this implausible movie, which is made all the more unbelievable because the audience is expected to believe that Clint is still this hot, irresistable stud with the power to attract much younger women.
15. (1998) Ted has carried a torch for his high school sweetheart for 13 years, so much so that he hires a private investigator to track her down. But the P.I. falls in love with her too, and of course they're not the only ones vying for her attention.

Answer: There's Something About Mary

Bobby and Peter Farrelly directed this very slapstick movie which makes fun of, and trivializes the stalking of women. Cameron Diaz, Matt Dillon, Ben Stiller and Chris Elliott star.
