Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In the 1993 comedy, "Hot Shots! Part Deux", Charlie Sheen's character compares the pain of a broken heart to the pain of passing the world's largest kidney stone. What is the name of Charlie Sheen's character in this movie?

Answer: Sean 'Topper' Harley

Topper Harley is coaxed out of retirement to rescue a team that was captured invading Saddam Hussein's palace. Sheen had to endure a strenuous training programme to get him into the type of shape needed to spoof a line of action heroes.
2. Paul Edgecombe (Tom Hanks) is cured of which piddling abdominal ailment by the prisoner John Coffey in the 1999 film "The Green Mile"?

Answer: Urinary Tract (Bladder) Infection

The film is told in a flashback format, focusing on the life of corrections officer Paul Edgecombe during his time looking after prisoners on Death Row. Michael Clark Duncan, who portrayed the super-naturally gifted John Coffey, earned an Academy Award nomination for Best Actor in a Supporting Role for his performance.
3. Peritonitis brought on by appendicitis is responsible for the death of Frank Doel in the 1987 film "84 Charing Cross Road". Which actor, noted for his portrayals of American Presidents Richard Nixon and John Quincy Adams, played Frank Doel in this film?

Answer: Anthony Hopkins

The film deals with a long distance relationship that begins in 1949 between an avid New York book reader, Helene played by Anne Bancroft, and a London dealer of antique books (Frank). All their communications are via correspondence with circumstances conspiring to keep them from meeting.

By the time Helene does make it to London, some twenty years later, it is too late. Bancroft won a British Academy Award (BAFTA) for her performance as Helene and Dame Judi Dench also earned the award for her work in a supporting role. Considering the subject nature of the film, I was quite surprised to note that one of the producers was Mel Brooks of "Blazing Saddles" fame.
4. In which 2004 Tom Hanks movie does a case of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) foil a robbery and place the thieves in a position where they must try to murder an old woman?

Answer: The Ladykillers

An explosive device is accidentally triggered by a gang member in a tunnel. As he races to escape his IBS flares up, slowing him down so that the resultant explosion throws him against a table. This alerts the old lady who uncovers the plot and delivers an ultimatum to the robbers - return the money and go to confession or she'll call the police.

The gang have a third alternative. The film is directed by the Coen brothers, Joel and Ethan, with Tom Hanks in the lead role as the mastermind of the heist. Marva Munsen plays the God-fearing little old lady and JK Simmons takes the role of the explosives expert, Garth Pancake, with the IBS issue.
5. 'The Kane Madness', which includes symptoms such as debilitating stomach cramps and severe diarrhoea, surfaces in the 2001 film "Evolution". Which "X-Files" star played the role of the man responsible for the ailment, Ira Kane?

Answer: David Duchovny

The film follows two scientists who are called to investigate a meteor in Arizona that contains extraterrestrial life forms. Ira's efforts are hampered by his past misdemeanour (The Kane Madness), which also involves other abdominal issues such as flatulence and erectile dysfunction.
6. Pilots Clarence Oveur (Peter Graves) and Roger Murdock (Kareem Abdul-Jabbar) are both stricken by food poisoning in which 1980 satirical comedy?

Answer: Airplane (Flying High)

Believe it or not, this is the only time the writers took the opportunity to explore the use of a flatulence joke in the film. As Leslie Nielsen's character, Dr Alan Rumack, starts to recite another stricken passenger's symptoms - dry throat, dizzy spells, extremely itchy rashes, muscle spasms, drooling and, of course, uncontrollable flatulence, Peter Graves is behind with a growing look of horror as he acts out each one of the symptoms as they're called, including the 'backside bazouki'.
The Farrelly Brothers cite this movie as one of their greatest inspirations.
7. Henry Sherman, played by Danny Glover, points out that Gene Hackman's character does not have stomach cancer because 'you cannot eat three cheeseburgers a day with french fries if you did' in which 2001 comedy?

Answer: The Royal Tenenbaums

Directed by Wes Anderson and written by Owen Wilson, the movie follows the breakdown of three child prodigies after their father walks out on them. Hackman, who was initially reluctant to take the role, won a Golden Globe for Best Actor for his performance.
8. In the 2008 movie, "Marley and Me", Marley succumbs to an attack of gastric dilation volvulus. Who or what is Marley is this film?

Answer: A dog

The film is based on an autobiographical work by New York Times journalist, John Grogan. Marley is the family's highly strung and energetic Labrador Retriever who manages to test everyone's patience. In the process, however, he also becomes a source of learning and understanding for the family. The movie stars Owen Wilson and Jennifer Aniston.
9. In the 2002 film "Harry Potter and The Chamber of Secrets", Ron Weasley attempts to curse Draco Malfoy with a slug vomiting charm. It fails. Why?

Answer: Ron's wand was broken.

Ron's wand gets broken early in the film when the car he and Harry (Potter) are travelling in crashes into the Whomping Willow. His endeavours to repair it fail so that any spell cast with it generally affects the wand wielder. The spell, correctly called 'Slugulus Eructo', causes the victim to throw up slime and slugs for about ten minutes. Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley) revealed that the slugs used in the movie were a root-beer flavoured confection.
10. In which 1968 musical film did Fanny Brice (Barbra Streisand) and Florenz Ziegfeld (Walter Pidgeon) trade insults over a stomach ulcer?

Answer: Funny Girl

"Flo! Flo, quit yelling or your ulcer will flare up," warns Fanny Brice. "That's funny coming from you, you gave me that ulcer!" Florenz Ziegfeld replies.

The film is based on the relationship between Fanny Brice and gambler Nicky Arnstein, played by Omar Sharif. Streisand, for her performance, would go on to win the Academy Award for Best Actress.
