Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Starring Amanda Seyfried and Gary Oldman, which of the following titles is a 2011 fantasy historical romance film that was produced by Leonardo DiCaprio?

Answer: Red Riding Hood

"Red Riding Hood" is a 2011 film directed by Catherine Hardwicke. The storyline is loosely based upon Charles Perrault's fairytale of "Little Red Riding Hood". Young Valerie lives with her parents Cesaire and Suzette on the edge of the forest. The villagers are plagued by a werewolf and recruit a witch hunter to help kill the wolf. Valerie is in love with the woodcutter Peter but is promised in marriage to the blacksmith's son. Through the story many of the villager's become victims of the wolf, who is revealed to be Valerie's father. Peter and Valerie manage to kill him but not before Peter is bitten thus becoming a werewolf himself.
2. A prequel to "Silence of the Lambs", which 2002 psychological thriller features the complicated character Dr. Hannibal Lecter?

Answer: Red Dragon

Dr. Hannibal Lecter appeared in the films "The Silence of the Lambs" in 1991, and "Hannibal" in 2001. "Red Dragon" was produced in 2002 and serves as a prequel to the former two stories. The film focuses on the dynamic relationship between FBI agent Will Graham (Ed Norton) and Dr. Hannibal Lecter (Anthony Hopkins).

The movie also features Ralph Fiennes, Mary Louise Parker, Emily Watson, and Harvey Keitel. The film actually tracks the fictitious events of the FBI's pursuit of a serial killer whom they name the "Tooth Fairy". Hannibal Lecter is in prison after being found guilty of several brutal murders.

However, the FBI seek out his expertize in attempting to track down the tooth fairy.
3. Starring Samuel L. Jackson, which of the following movies is a Canadian drama that earned an Academy Award for Best Original Score in 1999?

Answer: The Red Violin

"The Red Violin" is directed by Francois Girard and tells the story of a red violin and its journey through four centuries and five countries. The violin is sold in Canada at an auction in 1997 and there is a flashback to a tarot reading for the violin's owner back in 1681. Nicolo Bussotti is a master violin-maker whose wife Anna Rudolfi is about to give birth.

She dies during childbirth along with his child. Nicolo in his devastation varnishes an unfinished violin with the blood of his wife, and so begins the story of the Red Violin.
4. In what 2005 thriller directed by Wes Craven does a hotel manager find herself enmeshed in an assassination plot 30,000 feet above ground?

Answer: Red Eye

Rachel McAdams plays the role of Lisa Reisert who is boarding a plane from Dallas to Miami after attending her grandmother's funeral. Lisa is a hotel manager. She ends up sitting next to Jackson Rippner (Cillian Murphy) who she had befriended in the airport prior to the flight.

After taking off, Jackson divulges that he is actually a terrorist who is planning the assassination of the Deputy Secretary of Homeland Security who is staying at Lisa's hotel. Jackson threatens the life of Lisa's father if she will not cooperate to make a call from the plane to move the Secretary to a room that has been targeted by a missile.

Not to ruin the ending but... good guys win and bad guys lose.
5. Now time to jump back in the time travel machine to 1948 to discover what famous Western movie starring John Wayne and Montgomery Clift?

Answer: Red River

"Red River" was directed and produced by Howard Hawks. The story is based upon a fictitious account of the first cattle drive along the Chisholm Trail from Texas to Kansas. Thomas Dunson (John Wayne) and his adoptive son Matt Garth take on the old west complete with stampedes, Indian attacks, gunfights, and romance.
6. The planet Mars is the location for which Val Kilmer starring science fiction thriller?

Answer: Red Planet

"Red Planet" underwhelmed the theater-going audiences in 2000. Directed by Antony Hoffmann, it cost over $80 million to make. Industry estimates suggest that the movie made a significant loss (close to $50 million). The star of the movie was Val Kilmer who is part of a six-person crew to investigate why terra-forming on Mars is failing. On arrival in orbit, commander Kate Bowman (Carrie-Anne Moss) remains on Mars-1 while the five-man crew journey down to the surface.

A sequence of misfortunes befalls the crew and Robby Gallagher (Val Kilmer) is the only one to make it off the planet alive. Personally, I quite enjoyed the movie.

However, the "New York Times" review called it, and I quote, "a leaden skimpily plotted space-age outward bound adventure with vague allegorical aspirations that remain entirely unrealized". I don't think they liked it!
7. Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Grey, prior to "Dirty Dancing", both appeared in what alternative 1980s American warfare movie?

Answer: Red Dawn

"Red Dawn" is a 1984 film directed by John Milius. The setting is an alternative United States where America experiences an invasion by Russia, Cuba, and Nicaragua. World War III on American soil brings high school students together under their high school mascot of the Wolverines to fight a guerilla-style campaign against the invaders.

Interesting fact about the movie is that is was the first film in the United States to be released with a Motion Picture Association of America PG-13 movie rating. Oh, and America won for those that are interested.
8. A novel by James Jones inspired which of the following 1998 movies starring Sean Penn, Nick Nolte, and Jim Caviezel among other big names?

Answer: The Thin Red Line

"The Thin Red Line" was directed by Terrence Malick in 1998. The story is a fictionalized portrayal of the Battle of Mount Austen located on the Guadalcanal during World War II. The soldiers are a part of 1st Battalion, C Company, 27th Infantry Regiment and 25th Infantry Division.

Their mission is to take a hostile Japanese stronghold on the island, a mission they are successful in achieving but at great loss of life. Critics consider this movie to be one of the best ever modern-day war dramas and it was nominated for seven Academy Awards.

The cast also included such notables as Jared Leto, Woody Harrelson, John Travolta, and George Clooney.
9. If a movie fan would hear the name Sean Connery and think of a submarine, what is the only possible response?

Answer: The Hunt for Red October

"The Hunt for Red October" is a classic 1990 drama thriller based upon Tom Clancy's best selling book. Sean Connery stars as Russian submarine captain Marko Ramius, who is attempting to defect to the United States. CIA operative, Jack Ryan (Alec Baldwin), predicts the defection and is called upon to persuade the U.S. Navy before engaging the two countries in a violent confrontation.

The great James Earl Jones also makes an appearance in the film. The movie earned an Oscar in 1991 for Best Sound Editing.
10. What 1961 children's book by Wilson Rawls was adapted for screenplay twice in 1974 and 2003?

Answer: Where the Red Fern Grows

Growing up the only children's book that ever made me cry was "Where the Red Fern Grows". This touching story of a young boy's relationship with his two Redbone Coonhound hunting dogs is very powerful. Billy Coleman falls in love with the idea of having his own hunting dogs. With his grandpa's help he gets two redbone coonhounds.

He trains them and they win a hunting competition. Following the competition they get into a confrontation with a mountain lion. The dogs save Billy's life but end up dying (hence my forlorn tears). Great story and two acceptable movie portrayals of the book.
