Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Marvelously shot, 'Munich' was nominated for several top Oscars, including Best Directing, Best Editing and Best Picture. What Oscar-winning director was in charge of this project?

Answer: Steven Spielberg

You may have heard of that Steven Spielberg guy, you know, the one who directed 'Jaws', 'E.T.', 'Raiders of the Lost Ark', 'The Color Purple', 'Jurassic Park', 'Schindler's List' and 'Saving Private Ryan'. 'Munich', in my opinion, compares favorably with the best of these films.

Incidentally, though it did not win for any of them, 'Munich' was nominated for five Oscars.
2. At the opening, and later at various intervals in the film, the story of the Munich Olympic killings is unfolded before our eyes. In what year did these tragic Olympic games take place?

Answer: 1972

The movie is based on the book 'Vengeance: The True Story of an Israeli Counter-Terrorist Team', written by a journalist named George Jonas from Canada. This book was once before brought to film, albeit on the small screen, in the 1986 made-for-TV movie 'Sword of Gideon'.
3. What able young actor plays the role of Avner, the lead Israeli agent sent out to assassinate those who were believed to have orchestrated the plot behind the Munich Olympic killings?

Answer: Eric Bana

Eric Bana was born Eric Banadinovich in Melbourne, Australia. His father was Croatian-born, while his mother was from Germany. Thus his German speaking and his marvelous German accent in the film are genuine!
4. What Israeli Prime Minister shows up early on in the film, helping to set into motion the plan of retaliation against the plotters of the Olympic murders?

Answer: Golda Meir

Golda Meir, who was in power at the time of the 1972 Munich Olympics massacre, was played by Lynn Cohen in the film. Other key Israeli officials of the time, including Attorney General Meir Shamgar and Mossad chief Zvi Zamir, are also depicted.
5. If Avner agrees to carry out the mission that has been selected for him by key figures in the Israeli government and intelligence community, he must resign his position in Israel's top intelligence agency. What is the name of this organization from which he disassociates himself?

Answer: Mossad

Mossad is short for Ha-Mosad le-Modi'in u-le-Tafkidim Meyuhadim, or, in English translation, 'The Institute for Intelligence and Special Operations'. Avner has to resign from Mossad, losing all the benefits he receives from the organization during this very dangerous mission. He can't be seen to have any connection with the Israeli government.
6. What is the name of the Geoffrey Rush character, Avner's key remaining contact with the Israeli government?

Answer: Ephraim

Oddly enough, Geoffrey Rush is another Australian-born actor who finds himself in a key role in this film. Fans have enjoyed Rush in such films as 'Pirates of the Caribbean' and 'Quills', but perhaps his greatest career achievement was his work in the 1996 film 'Shine', for which he won an Academy Award.
7. Assembled with Avner is a small task force of men, each with his own violent specialty. Which of these is not among the men who work in Avner's deadly assassination team?

Answer: Phil

Carl the 'worrier' (and cleaner) is brilliantly played by Ciarán Hinds. Hans is the document forger of the team, he is played by Hanns Zischler. Robert, portrayed by Mathieu Kassovitz, is the toy-maker slash explosive devise rigger. All three of these characters meet their deaths during the film.
8. What now very well-known actor worldwide plays the role of Steve, the South African member of Avner's team?

Answer: Daniel Craig

Daniel Craig, who began his stint as James Bond in the 2006 film 'Casino Royale', lends his acting talents to the role of Steve, a hardcore Jewish nationalist and jolly good driver.
9. In which European city does the team fail to make their intended kill?

Answer: London

The team successfully assassinates its targets in Rome, Cyprus, Paris, Beirut and Athens, but fails to take out its chief target, Ali Hassan Salameh, the chief of operations of Black September, the terrorist organization that claimed responsibility for the Munich Olympic killings, in London.

They also fail to kill him in Tarifa, Spain. This is the last operation that is undertaken by the group, now down to just Avner and Steve.
10. In which city do Avner and his family live following the operations of his assassination squad?

Answer: New York

Avner sends his wife and child to New York, where he believes they will be safe. After his squad ceases to operate, Avner, who has become dejected and rather paranoid, moves to New York to be with his family. Interestingly, the last image the viewer sees in the film is of the World Trade Center towering over Manhattan.
