Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which character(s) in the film lacked British accents?

Answer: Both of these are correct.

Although the actors - Denzel Washington and Robert Sean Leonard - clearly sounded American, their performances were so good that, to me, their lack of accents did not detract from the rest of the movie. One more super actor, Keanu Reeves, definitely sounded "un-British," but again, was awesome in this film. Michael Keaton, an American, did use a lower-class sounding English accent for his role as the very odd Dogberry!
2. The story revolved around the adventures of two different couples who, despite help and interference, ended up together in the end. Who were these two couples?

Answer: Claudio and Hero; Benedick and Beatrice

The younger pair, Claudio and Hero, fell in love and married despite the evil intentions of Don John. Benedick and Beatrice, who had long fought "a merry war", finally succumbed to one another's charms after being tricked by their friends and families!
3. Which real-life married couple starred in this film as Benedick and Beatrice?

Answer: Kenneth Branagh and Emma Thompson

When this movie was filmed, Branagh and Thompson were still married. At some point after Branagh made "Frankenstein", the couple separated.
4. Which actress/character was an unknowing pawn in the evil schemes of a villain in this story?

Answer: Imelda Staunton/Margaret

Poor Margaret! She had no idea Borachio's "wooing" was a set-up to destroy the love between Hero and Claudio. The wonderful and versatile Imelda Staunton also played Viola's devoted nurse in "Shakespeare in Love". In addition, Ms. Staunton appeared in the film, "Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix," as the dreaded Professor Umbridge.
5. While eavesdropping on a conversation, what caused Benedick to fall over backwards on his chair?

Answer: He heard that Beatrice secretly loved him.

This was possibly one of the best scenes in the movie, and Kenneth Branagh played it to the hilt. Watching him skulk in the background, trying to hear everything said by the Prince, Leonato, and Claudio, was hysterical!
6. What did Beatrice and Benedick do simultaneously after realizing that they were loved by the other?

Answer: Beatrice swung on a garden swing while Benedick splashed through a fountain.

This beautiful scene especially emphasized the glorious setting of the movie, which was filmed at a villa in central Italy. Both Branagh and Thompson played this scene so very well - such joy at the thought of requited love!
7. In the beginning of the movie, lines from a song actually written by Shakespeare were recited.

Answer: True

Shakespeare often wrote songs to be performed in his plays, and "Much Ado About Nothing" contains two such songs. The first, which was heard at the beginning of this movie, began, "Sigh no more, ladies, sigh no more," while the other song was sung by Claudio at the supposed tomb of Hero.
8. Who directed this version of "Much Ado About Nothing"?

Answer: Kenneth Branagh

A very versatile actor and director, Kenneth Branagh has directed many films, including other plays by Shakespeare such as "Henry V" and "Hamlet". One of my favorite performances by him, though, was as Dr. Arliss Loveless in "Wild Wild West".
9. What was the name of the evil brother of Don Pedro, played so well by Keanu Reeves?

Answer: Don John

Don John originally led a revolt against his brother, Don Pedro of Aragon, the Prince. After the revolt was put down, Don Pedro pardoned his brother. However, jealousy over his brother as heir, as well as jealousy over the Prince's friendship with Claudio, led Don John to formulate plans of revenge against Claudio and Hero.
10. Who wrote the original music for "Much Ado About Nothing"?

Answer: Patrick Doyle

Patrick Doyle's filmography as a composer is extensive, and he has worked with Kenneth Branagh several times. His work includes soundtracks for "Henry V", "Dead Again", and "Frankenstein" (all with Mr. Branagh), and "Sense and Sensibility" with Emma Thompson. In addition, Mr. Doyle played Balthazar in "Much Ado".
