Sarah (Diane Lane) has been divorced for eight months, but doesn't show any interest in dating. Sarah teaches preschool and has a student named Austin. Austin receives a bloody nose one day during class, and his father, Bob (Dermot Mulroney), comes to pick him up. Bob and Sarah discuss the fact that Bob and his wife are "trying it apart for awhile", as Austin puts it. Sarah is attracted to Bob, but doesn't think a relationship would be appropriate since he's the father of a student.

Sarah's sisters, Carol and Christine, set up a date for Sarah with a man advertising on the internet. The man says he'll be waiting at the restaurant with a yellow rose. When Sarah shows up at the restaurant, she sees her father, and then is appalled to see that he has a yellow rose. Sarah's dad, Bill (Christopher Plummer), is very much into internet dating, which is how he met Dolly (Stockard Channing). As he tells Sarah, he was with her mom for 45 years and they were very much in love, but he doesn't expect to find that kind of love again.

He just wants to keep busy so he doesn't think about what he lost. Bill takes his three daughters to Dolly's for dinner, and Sarah discovers that Bob and Austin are living in the same trailer park. Bill brings up the fact that Sarah had a crush on David Cassidy when she was young, prompting a "Partridge Family" sing-a-long which includes the three sisters, Dolly and Bob.

He explains to Charlie how the movie depicts "a love so real even after you're dead it still hurts". That's what Jake says he wants. Jake goes with Sherry to see "Doctor Zhivago" at a theater which happens to be right across the street from where Sarah is getting a manicure with her friends, Leo and Eric. Sarah runs outside to tell Jake she's been thinking of him, but then finds out that he's with Sherry.

When Jake mentions they had just seen "Doctor Zhivago", Sherry tells Sarah that she didn't get the movie. Sarah says she loves the movie and always hopes for a happy ending, making Jake realize how perfectly suited for each other they are.

When Sarah asks for a single chicken breast, the counter clerk tries to get her to buy a fryer for just a little more money. She declines, but he persists until she finally has to tell him she's divorced, she eats alone and she doesn't want a bunch of chicken hanging around.

The next time he sees her, he's a little fearful of her, but still tries to sell her something else. When he tries to get her to talk about her problems, Sarah reminds him that he's not a bartender. At his suggestion that she should try internet dating, Sarah tells him firmly, "Chicken, now".

The third time he sees her, he assumes she wants a single chicken breast again, but she orders three fryers and some other items. After he sees that Sarah is with Jake, the clerk is happy for her.
