Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. How does Sarah meet Bob?

Answer: Through her job

Sarah (Diane Lane) has been divorced for eight months, but doesn't show any interest in dating. Sarah teaches preschool and has a student named Austin. Austin receives a bloody nose one day during class, and his father, Bob (Dermot Mulroney), comes to pick him up. Bob and Sarah discuss the fact that Bob and his wife are "trying it apart for awhile", as Austin puts it. Sarah is attracted to Bob, but doesn't think a relationship would be appropriate since he's the father of a student.
2. Who does Sarah's first date turn out to be?

Answer: her father

Sarah's sisters, Carol and Christine, set up a date for Sarah with a man advertising on the internet. The man says he'll be waiting at the restaurant with a yellow rose. When Sarah shows up at the restaurant, she sees her father, and then is appalled to see that he has a yellow rose. Carol later jokes that she could have called their uncle and they could have had a double date. Sarah is not amused by this.
3. Other than 'sensuous', what word is used to describe Sarah in her PerfectMatch.com profile?

Answer: voluptuous

After the accidental date with their father, Carol (Elizabeth Perkins) puts a profile on PerfectMatch.com for Sarah, something she doesn't tell Sarah until after the fact. Sarah questions the word 'voluptuous', as does Jake when he meets her. Sarah mentions that her sister wrote the ad, prompting Jake to say, "Your sister's ad, your brother's dog. Those your shoes?".
4. Does Jake own a dog?

Answer: No

Carol includes 'must love dogs' in Sarah's profile to add a little something for Sarah. Jake answers Sarah's ad, and the two of them arrange to meet at the dog park. Since Sarah doesn't own a dog, she brings her brother's dog, Mother Teresa, to the dog park. Jake (John Cusack) shows up with a small white dog, named Bruno, who knows how to roll over and play dead very well. Jake admits that the dog belongs to his friend, Charlie, prompting Sarah to say that he was there under false pretenses.

He counters with the fact that her ad says 'must love dogs', not 'must own dogs'.
5. What TV show's theme song do Sarah and her sisters sing at Dolly's house?

Answer: The Partridge Family

Sarah's dad, Bill (Christopher Plummer), is very much into internet dating, which is how he met Dolly (Stockard Channing). As he tells Sarah, he was with her mom for 45 years and they were very much in love, but he doesn't expect to find that kind of love again.

He just wants to keep busy so he doesn't think about what he lost. Bill takes his three daughters to Dolly's for dinner, and Sarah discovers that Bob and Austin are living in the same trailer park. Bill brings up the fact that Sarah had a crush on David Cassidy when she was young, prompting a "Partridge Family" sing-a-long which includes the three sisters, Dolly and Bob.
6. When Sarah and Jake return to her house after their dinner date, Carol is already there. What food item does Carol mention that she has brought?

Answer: meat

When Sarah and Jake return to Sarah's house, Carol calls from the kitchen saying that she's filled Sarah's freezer again. She says there's enough meat to feed every guy who answers Sarah's ad. Carol finishes saying this as she walks out and sees that someone is with Sarah. Sarah introduces Jake, adding that he answered the ad.

After a brief pause, Jake asks, "Do I get my meat?", to which Carol responds by tossing him a package.
7. What is Jake's favorite movie?

Answer: Doctor Zhivago

Charlie thinks it's unusual for two men to be watching "Doctor Zhivago" together in the afternoon, but Jake loves the movie. He explains to Charlie how the movie depicts "a love so real even after you're dead it still hurts". That's what Jake says he wants. Jake goes with Sherry to see "Doctor Zhivago" at a theater which happens to be right across the street from where Sarah is getting a manicure with her friends, Leo and Eric. Sarah runs outside to tell Jake she's been thinking of him, but then finds out that he's with Sherry.

When Jake mentions they had just seen "Doctor Zhivago", Sherry tells Sarah that she didn't get the movie. Sarah says she loves the movie and always hopes for a happy ending, making Jake realize how perfectly suited for each other they are.
8. What does Jake build?

Answer: boats

Jake handcrafts racing sculls from teak, and takes great pride in his work. He treats each boat as a work of art, but hasn't sold any. His friend Charlie brings over someone interested in buying one of the boats, but Jake says "no" after he finds out that the man wants the boat cut in half lengthwise so he can mount it on a wall.
9. How does Jake describe Sarah?

Answer: his Halley's comet

Jake decides to sell the boat to the guy who wants it cut in half, but wants to take it out on the water one time. While Jake's parked at a coffee shop, Bill comes out and admires the boat. The two of them talk boats, and Jake mentions that he's lost a woman who was his Halley's comet. Bill repeats this phrase to Sarah when he gets to her house.

She recognizes the phrase because Jake had told her that she was his Halley's comet on the phone. Sarah goes in search of Jake to tell him how she feels about him.
10. What item does Sarah have trouble buying at the grocery store?

Answer: chicken breast

When Sarah asks for a single chicken breast, the counter clerk tries to get her to buy a fryer for just a little more money. She declines, but he persists until she finally has to tell him she's divorced, she eats alone and she doesn't want a bunch of chicken hanging around.

The next time he sees her, he's a little fearful of her, but still tries to sell her something else. When he tries to get her to talk about her problems, Sarah reminds him that he's not a bartender. At his suggestion that she should try internet dating, Sarah tells him firmly, "Chicken, now".

The third time he sees her, he assumes she wants a single chicken breast again, but she orders three fryers and some other items. After he sees that Sarah is with Jake, the clerk is happy for her.
