Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What epic desert movie, which is so long it has an intermission, did the NFR induct in 1991? It won both Oscar Best Picture and BAFTA Best Film awards.

Answer: Lawrence of Arabia

The epic film about the way T.E. Lawrence tried to unite warring Arab tribes against the Turks in WWI won both awards for 1962. Another David Lean film, "The Bridge on the River Kwai", also won both of these awards and was inducted into the NFR in 1997.
2. Which 1942 Orson Welles film, inducted into the Registry in 1991, had about an hour of footage cut by the studio prior to release?

Answer: The Magnificent Ambersons

While Welles's surviving notes describe the cut scenes, the footage itself was destroyed. The story of the fall of the Amberson family in the 20th century lost its final scene, many conversations, and most of a ballroom sequence that was shot in a long take.
3. An animated film was inducted in 1991. What dinosaur did Winsor McCay introduce us to in 1914?

Answer: Gertie

"Gertie the Dinosaur" is about twelve minutes long and contains expressive animation in black line drawings on a white background. Gertie responds to McCay's commands, ignores them, fights with a mammoth, drinks a lake dry, and gives McCay a ride on her back. Its various techniques make it a milestone in animation.
4. The 1939 film "Tevya" tells the same story as which 1970's film?

Answer: Fiddler on the Roof

Also known as "Tevye", the Yiddish-American film was based on the silent film "Khavah" and the play "Tevye". It was the first non-English language film to be inducted into the Registry. Maurice Schwartz plays Tevya, a Jewish man seeing the ways of tradition crumble around him in the 20th century. Topol plays the role in the 1971 film.
5. What 1991 National Film Registry induction, directed by Jim McBride and starring L.M. Kit Carson, is a fiction film done in the style of a documentary?

Answer: David Holzman's Diary

The 1967 faux-documentary is about a man making a documentary. He records his life in a similar manner as YouTubers of the 21st century. The three incorrect answers were also inductions for 1991. Jim McBride also directed the film "The Big Easy" and episodes of "Six Feet Under".
6. One documentary inducted into the Registry in 1991 shows a typical day at a school. What is this 1968 film called?

Answer: High School

Shot over five weeks, "High School" has no narration and no narrative. It simply presents what high schoolers go through daily, from dull classes to teachers who squash their individuality. A sequel, "High School II", came out in 1994. Both films were directed by Frederick Wiseman.
7. While not the first animated film inducted into the National Film Registry, this was the first Warner Brothers cartoon admitted. Which cartoon contains the song "Return My Love" set to 19th century music?

Answer: What's Opera, Doc?

"What's Opera, Doc?" from 1957 uses music from the Wagner operas "The Flying Dutchman", "Die Walkure", "Siegfried", "Rienzi", and "Tannhauser". Bugs and Elmer sing "Return My Love" to the tune of the "Pilgrim's Chorus" from "Tannhauser" and dance to the bacchanal music.

Although the short did not win an Oscar, it is considered by many film historians as one of the greatest cartoons ever made.
8. Which of these 1992 inductions to the National Film Registry is NOT a silent film?

Answer: The Bank Dick

"The Bank Dick" is also called "The Bank Detective", particularly in the U.K. Starring W.C. Fields, the 1940 film is a comedy about a detective trying to solve a mystery about missing funds.
9. What scandalous 1930 film starring Marlene Dietrich was inducted into the Registry in 1992? (Hint: it takes place in the same country as "Casablanca".)

Answer: Morocco

"Morocco" is a romance about a cabaret singer who falls in love during the Rif War of the 1920s in Morocco. It caused a scandal for a scene where Dietrich sings while dressed in men's clothing and kisses a woman. Most of "Casablanca", which was one of the first set of 25 NFR inductions, is set in Morocco.
10. Which 1992 NFR induction is a series of short, connected films made in the 1960s?

Answer: Dog Star Man

Made from 1961 to 1964, the five films in "Dog Star Man" make up a longer, albeit experimental and dreamlike, narrative. It mainly concerns the various things a man sees while climbing a mountain with his dog. The films were directed by Stan Brakhage.
