Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What was the name of that horse crazy girl who rode in the Grand National, when women weren't allowed to ride in the race?

Answer: Velvet Brown

Velvet was the third of four children. She had two older sisters, Edwina and Malvolia, and a younger brother, Donald.
2. What did Velvet's class sing in the second scene of the movie?

Answer: A Happy, Happy Holiday

If you really listen to the lyrics it's a silly song. Those poor girls were trying to ignore the boys peering through the windows while they were singing.
3. What was the name of the man who put The Pie up for auction?

Answer: Mr. Ede

Policeman: "That's the third time this week that animal's gotten loose. Now let's see, we have Mr. Dale's Begonias and over there we have two steel frames measuring five by ten feet....you take full responsibility for this because you're the rightful owner."
Mr. Ede: "Not for long!"
4. Mr. Hallam: "Ah I hear you're gonna win the raffle, are ya?"
Velvet: "Oh I don't know." "What's the winning number, I can keep a secret Velv?"
What was Velvet's raffle number?

Answer: 62

When Mi gave the Browns their shillings to buy raffle tickets, the girls and Donald chose their numbers. Edwina: "Oh you're sweet Mal I'll have 10," Malvolia: "Me 119, it's on my brain and letters of fire!" Velvet: "Mi you're wonderful, I'll take 62." The first drawing at the raffle was number 113, a number that hadn't been sold, therefore they had to draw again.
5. Velvet was younger in the movie than in the book because the role was cast for Elizabeth Taylor.

Answer: True

In the book she was 14, in the movie she was Taylor's age, 12. Velvet was to be played by a girl who looked mature but "boyish", since she had to impersonate a male jockey in the race. The studio was iffy about giving Taylor the part so she worked hard to look more mature.

She ate a high protein diet and exercised. At the end of the year she came to the studio and exclaimed "I have boobs!"
6. What was Mi's father's name?

Answer: Dan Taylor

He helped Mrs. Brown train to swim the English Channel. "He followed me in a boat...leaned over and fed me...breathed the spirit into me...made me do it when I was ready to give up." recalls Mrs. Brown to Velvet in the attic.
7. Mrs. Brown's prize money for swimming the English Channel was used as entry money for the Grand National. How much were the entry fees?

Answer: 95 pounds

After Mi comes back from London, he gives the Browns five pounds change. Mrs. Brown gave Velvet her prize money of 100 pounds, she had saved it for a special cause - helping her daughter achieve her own goal, or "bit of folly" in Mrs. Brown's terms. Velvet gave Mi a half crown to spend in London. The raffle tickets for The Pie cost 1 shilling.
8. What was the last line in the movie?

Answer: Mi!

Mrs. Brown reminds Velvet to enjoy everything that comes her way in life, and then forget them and move on after they happen. This doesn't stop her from saddling up and galloping up the Brighton Road to find Mi. While she doesn't say it in the movie, she wanted to tell him about his father, Mrs. Brown's trainer. That was the one thing he had wanted out of the Browns, to learn about his father.

He also pocketed some cash from the cupboard, but returned it after Velvet enlightened him with her sweetness.
9. What were Velvet's parents' names in the movie?

Answer: Araminty and Herbert

Isn't it interesting how the parents never call each other by their first names in the movie, until the very end? In the book the father's name was William, but in the movie it was Herbert. In the book the parents' first names are used more frequently.
10. Who were the top three winners of the Grand National, after Pie was disqualified?

Answer: Ebony Star, Tantabus, Faithful Lad

Blue Tumeny's rider fell off in the race so he was disqualified. The final winners were announced after the announcer explained the track's ruling of Pie's elimination.
