The fight during the football game is posted on Youtube. When Jake first gets to his new school, the video quickly makes it around and becomes popular with the other students. Jake's soon-to-be rival, Ryan McCarthy, quickly takes notice of Jake's increased popularity.

One emotional scene in the movie is where Charlie apologizes to Jake for the family having to move. We get to see the softer side of Jake as he comforts Charlie and tells him that everything is going to be ok.

The question is important because Jake explains that the Shield of Achilles has non-combat related pictures on it, to remind Achilles what he was fighting for. Jake explains that a warrior needs to be reminded of home, family, etc, to be successful. This scene also sets up the scene after class in the parking lot, when Baja asks Jake to a party that is going on later that night. Jake accepts the invitation thinking that he was meeting Baja.

The party is at Ryan McCarthy's house, where Jake learns that Ryan is running a fight club. Jake also learns that Baja is Ryan's girlfriend. Ryan pushes Jake into fighting him. Ryan beats Jake using a Mixed Martial Art (MMA) fighting style. Even though Jake loses, he shows his toughness (or is it stubbornness) by continuing to get up when knocked down, until he is finally knocked unconscious.

Jake sees two kids fighting under the bleachers as he is walking to class. One kid is getting beat up. The two kids that are fighting are surrounded by a group of spectators. Jake runs up and stops the fight. Max tells Jake, "I got this!" and punches Jake in the face. Jake walks away confused.

Jake argues with Jean at every step of his training. Jean is a patient instructor, and not only trains Jake, but helps him begin to work through his emotions.

In an attempt to get Jake to fight him, Ryan beats up Max bad enough to put him in the hospital. Jake goes to the dojo and speaks with Jean, telling him that he is going to fight in a huge organized event called the Beat Down. Jean tells Jake that if he fights he cannot train with him anymore. Jean explains that his father had moved their family to Brazil from Africa.

He tells Jake that he and his brother were both professional fighters and that his brother was better. Jean tells of his brother's death in a bar fight that Jean feels responsible for, and that he has not seen his family in six years. Jake tells Jean that some fights need to be fought.

As Jake is walking out, Jean tells Jake to control the fight.

Early in the movie Jake finds the sweatshirt while packing for the move to Florida. The sweatshirt is a key element in almost every flashback that Jake has involving his father. The sweatshirt becomes a symbol of his father and Jake refuses to even look at it.

The scene where Jake pulls the sweatshirt out and puts it on while getting ready for the Beat Down is pivotal in showing that Jake has started allowing himself to emotionally heal.

Jake enters the ring and sees that Ryan was disqualified. The referee starts Jake's fight and Jake immediately taps out, ending the fight before a punch is thrown. Jake exits the ring, finds Baja and explains to her that he was there to fight Ryan, and since Ryan was disqualified, he is done fighting. Jake and Baja enter the parking lot, where Ryan confronts Jake about leaving. Jake tells Ryan that he was only there to fight him, and turns to leave when he is attacked by Ryan.

The fight is on and soon Jake and Ryan are surrounded by hundreds of spectators.

The fight is violent and Ryan gets Jake in a choke hold. It is tense as Ryan starts to choke Jake to unconsciousness. Using the training he has received as well as his own personal toughness, Jake reverses the hold and is able to escape. We watch Jean's training continue to pay off as Jake punches Ryan two times to the head then finishes with a kick to Ryan's head, knocking him out.

Answer: "Never give in, never give up, never back down."

Jean repeats this motto while training his students. The importance of this motto is shown throughout the movie. Jake could have given up in every one of his fights, or in his relationship with Baja, or given in to his dark emotions and given up on his family and himself.

By the end of the movie we see that Jake truly did follow the motto, "Never give in, never give up, never back down."
