Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. At his peak, Clark Gable was the most popular movie star in the world, and the undisputed king of the M.G.M. Studio. He's best remembered today as Rhett Butler in "Gone With The Wind". Which of the following films did he not star in?

Answer: Dinner At Eight

The link here is the original blond bombshell, Jean Harlow.
She co-starred with Gable in "Red Dust", "Wife vs Secretary" and "Saratoga", which was released after her tragically early death at only 26.
In "Dinner At Eight", in which she played Wallace Beery's wisecracking wife, she proved herself a fine comic actress. The film, a comedy/drama which has a number of interwoven story lines, features an ensemble cast, including John and Lionel Barrymore, Billie Burke, Lee Tracy and Marie Dressler in a hilarious performance as an over the hill actress. George Cukor directed.
2. If Gable was king of the M.G.M. lot, then Myrna Loy was undoubtedly the queen. She is best remembered today for her sophisticated comedy style, although if the occasion called for it she could be equally convincing in a dramatic role. In which of the following films did she not star?

Answer: Life With Father

It is William Powell who links these four films together.
Myrna Loy co-starred with William Powell in 14 films, most notably the six films in the "Thin Man" series.
William Powell's co-star in the delightful "Life With Father", however, was Irene Dunne. The film was directed by Michael Curtiz, and co-starred Elizabeth Taylor, Edmund Gwenn, ZaSu Pitts and Jimmy Lydon. It's a true story, based on the autobiography of Clarence Day Jr., and is an affectionate portrait of his father.
3. Billy Wilder, during his career, made a number of films which are considered to be among the greatest classics of American cinema, including "The Lost Weekend", "Sunset Boulevard" and my favourite Film Noir, "Double Indemnity". He also made some notable comedies. Which of these is not one of his?

Answer: Mister Roberts

These four films are linked by Jack Lemmon, who worked with Billy Wilder a number of times. Their most fondly remembered films together are "Some Like It Hot" and "The Apartment".
"Mister Roberts" was co-directed by John Ford and Mervyn Leroy, and won Lemmon his first Oscar, for Best Supporting Actor. It's set on board a U.S. Navy cargo ship during the last days of World War II, and is a largely comic account of the ongoing battle of wits between Henry Fonda as the title character, and James Cagney in one of his finest performances as the martinet of a captain.
4. Gable may have been king of the M.G.M. lot, but it was Humphrey Bogart who ruled at Warner Brothers, appearing in some of their biggest hits of the 1930s and '40s. In which of these films did Bogart not star?

Answer: Confidential Agent

Bogey and Lauren Bacall became a legendary screen couple in four films, beginning with her debut performance in "To Have And Have Not". Their on-screen chemistry was so great that one wishes they had made more together.
But it was Charles Boyer who was her co-star in "Confidential Agent". Based on the novel by Graham Greene, it's a spy story set at the time of the Spanish Civil War. It was directed by Herman Shumlin, and did nothing to enhance the reputations of anyone involved.
5. William Wyler is also recognized as one of the great American directors, making a number of fine films in a variety of genres, and in the process winning three Oscars for Best Director (for "Mrs. Miniver", "The Best Years Of Our Lives" and "Ben Hur"). Which of these did he not direct?

Answer: Dark Victory

The great Bette Davis links all four of these films.
William Wyler was Bette Davis' favourite director. He guided her to her second Best Actress Oscar in "Jezebel". (She actually received Oscar nominations for all four of these films.)
Edmund Goulding was her director in "Dark Victory". It's a classic four handkerchief weepie, with Bette Davis as a spoiled socialite who is diagnosed with an incurable brain tumour. Her co-stars were George Brent and Geraldine Fitzgerald. In lesser hands it could have been sickeningly sentimental, but the three stars play with such conviction that the film becomes genuinely moving.
6. One of my favourite British actresses from the classic era is the peerless Margaret Rutherford. She was always a joy to watch. In which of the following did she not star?

Answer: The Mirror Crack'd

These four films are linked by a fictional character, Agatha Christie's Miss Jane Marple.
Margaret Rutherford may have been a very unlikely Miss Marple, but the four films in which she played her are a joy. The fourth one in the series was "Murder Ahoy".
Unfortunately, the same can't be said for "The Mirror Crack'd", in which Angela Lansbury (normally an actress I like very much) played the role, co-starring with Elizabeth Taylor, Kim Novak and Rock Hudson. Sadly, however, even such a cast couldn't save the film from being a big disappointment. It was directed by Guy Hamilton.
7. Frank Sinatra wasn't only a great singer, but also a pretty good actor (he did, after all, win a Best Supporting Actor Oscar in "From Here To Eternity"). In which of these films did he not appear?

Answer: Toys In The Attic

Sinatra made a number of films together with his fellow Rat Pack member Dean Martin, also a very fine actor in his own right. They included the original "Ocean's 11", "Sergeants Three" and "Robin and The Seven Hoods".
However, in "Toys In The Attic", from the play by Lillian Hellman, Martin was cast opposite the superb Geraldine Page and Wendy Hiller. The film was directed by George Roy Hill, and told the story of two spinster sisters living together, and how a visit from their newly married brother affects their lives. It also starred Yvette Mimieux and Gene Tierney.
8. Even though he was born in England, Bob Hope could well be considered one of the quintessential American comedians. One of these films was not one of his. Do you know which?

Answer: Dixie

Dorothy Lamour starred with Bob Hope in "My Favorite Brunette", "Road To Rio" and "They Got Me Covered".
However, it was Bob and Dottie's co-star from the "Road" films, Bing Crosby, who starred with her in "Dixie". The film was directed by A. Edward Sutherland and was a biopic of Daniel Emmett, a songwriter and the man who produced the first minstrel shows. (Rather un-PC today, which is probably why the film is rarely, if ever, seen.)
9. Boris Karloff is one of the legendary Horror stars, gaining international fame as the monster in the 1931 "Frankenstein". In which of these films did he not appear?

Answer: The Black Camel

These four films are linked by Karloff's fellow horror star, Bela Lugosi, who rose to fame as Dracula. Karloff and Lugosi starred together in "The Black Cat", "The Raven" and "The Body Snatcher" (which was based on the real life Burke and Hare).
"The Black Camel", however, was not a horror film, but one of the early Charlie Chan mysteries, in which Lugosi co-starred with Warner Oland. He played a psychic who is one of the suspects in the murder of a Hollywood actress. (Karloff also appeared in a Charlie Chan film, "Charlie Chan At the Opera".)
10. Otto Preminger, apart from playing Mr. Freeze in a few of the "Batman" episodes, also directed some excellent film noir titles. Which of these noirs was not one of his?

Answer: Night and The City

All four of these films starred the lovely Gene Tierney. The best known of her films with Otto Preminger is "Laura", in which she co-starred with Dana Andrews, Clifton Webb, Vincent Price and Judith Anderson (a dream cast).
"Night and The City", however, was directed by Jules Dassin. It was filmed in London (Dassin had become persona non grata in Hollywood following his run-in with HUAC, and spent the rest of his career making films in Europe). Gene Tierney was co-starred with Richard Widmark and Googie Withers. Widmark plays a small time hustler, trying to make it as a wrestling promoter.
