Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. An investigative reporter unwisely prints a story leaked to her about a cold case murder investigation without verifying the details. The story places a businessman, the son of a mobster, in the center of a nonexistent investigation, with the resultant publicity shutting down his business. The reporter makes other mistakes too, one of which is sleeping with the subject of the investigation. Complete the title of this movie, "Absence of ______"?

Answer: Malice

From 1981, "Absence of Malice" was directed by Sydney Pollak. The movie starred Paul Newman, Sally Field, Melinda Dillon, Bob Balaban and Wilford Brimley. Newman, Dillon and Kurt Luedtke's original screenplay were nominated for Oscars.
2. In "Forces of Nature", Ben and Sarah meet as they each begin a trip to Savannah. Through unusual circumstances, they end up travelling together by plane, train, car and bus, falling in love by the time they reach Savannah. This sort of complicates things as one of them was going there for his/her wedding. Which one of them was getting married?

Answer: Ben

Ben was going to Savannah for his wedding to Bridget (Maura Tierney), and then met a whirlwind named Sarah. Ben Affleck and Sandra Bullock played Ben and Sarah in this cute 1999 movie.
3. In "Terms of Endearment", how many grandchildren does Aurora have when Emma dies?

Answer: three

Emma and her husband, Flap, had two boys, Tommy and Teddy, and one girl, Melanie. After Emma's death, the children live with Aurora and how they turn out is the subject of the sequel, "The Evening Star" (1996). Shirley MacLaine, Debra Winger, John Lithgow and Jack Nicholson were nominated for Oscars for their performances.

The movie won five of the eleven Oscars for which it was nominated, including Best Picture.
4. "Field of Dreams" was nominated for Best Picture at the 1990 Oscar awards. Did it win the award?

Answer: No

The movie, which starred Kevin Costner, Amy Madigan, Burt Lancaster and Ray Liotta, was nominated for three Oscars, for Best Picture, for Best Original Score and for Best Adapted Screenplay. "Field of Dreams" lost out to "Driving Miss Daisy" for Best Picture at the 1990 awards ceremony.
5. In "Days of Heaven", Bill (Richard Gere) and his two female travelling companions work as laborers on a farm in Texas. What are the true relationships of the two females to Bill?

Answer: girlfriend and sister

Abby (Brooke Adams) is Bill's girlfriend, and Linda (Linda Manz) is his kid sister. Bill tells the other laborers that Abby is his sister. After Bill finds out that the owner of the farm (Sam Shepard) is dying, he encourages Abby to marry the man so that when he dies they will inherit the money and property.
6. In "Streets of Fire", Tom Cody is called home by his sister because his former girlfriend, Ellen Aim, has been kidnapped by a gang called the Bombers. Cody and his companion, McCoy (Amy Madigan), set out to find and rescue Ellen. What is Ellen's profession?

Answer: Rock singer

Michael Pare and Diane Lane played Tom Cody and Ellen Aim. Rick Moranis played Ellen's sleazy manager, Billy Fish, who tags along for the rescue. It's been awhile since I've seen this (probably 1986-87) but the scene in the stairwell with Michael Pare where his hairstyle keeps changing between shots is what really sticks in my mind. Still, this movie is worth seeing just for all the names in it. Willem Dafoe played Raven, the leader of the Bombers (two years before "Platoon"), and other parts are played by Rick Rossovich, Bill Paxton, Mykelti Williamson, Lynne Thigpen and Lee Ving.
7. Who played the role of Cal Trask in "East of Eden"?

Answer: James Dean

Based on John Steinbeck's novel, "East of Eden" (1955) is about a young man who feels he needs to compete with his brother for the love of their father. Dean was nominated for a Best Actor Oscar, becoming the first person to be nominated posthumously for an acting award. The movie also starred Burl Ives, Julie Harris and Raymond Massey.
8. Three teenaged boys, on Nantucket in 1942, are curious about girls, and eager to have sexual encounters. One of them, Hermie, befriends a young woman whose husband is away fighting in WWII. What season completes the title of this movie, "__________ of '42"?

Answer: Summer

Gary Grimes, Jerry Houser and Oliver Conant played the three boys, Hermie, Oscar and Benjie. The woman, Dorothy, was played by Jennifer O'Neill. This 1971 movie was nominated for four Oscars, winning one for Best Original Score. "Summer of '42" was followed by the sequel, "Class of '44" in 1973.
9. Two very different men, Harold and Eric, train to compete at the 1924 Olympics in Paris, in "Chariots of Fire". What country do they represent?

Answer: Great Britain

Harold Abrahams, a determined Jew who engages the services of a trainer to become a better runner, and Eric Liddell, a devout Christian with a natural talent for running fast that he feels brings him closer to God, run for Great Britain in 1924. Ian Charleson, Ben Cross and Ian Holm starred in the 1981 movie which won four Oscars including Best Picture.
10. Did Peter O'Toole win a Best Actor Oscar for his performance in "Lawrence of Arabia"?

Answer: No

O'Toole's nomination for Best Actor was among the ten Oscar nominations the movie received, but he lost to Gregory Peck for "To Kill a Mockingbird". Among the seven Oscars "Lawrence of Arabia" won were Best Picture, Best Cinematography and Best Director for David Lean. The movie was released in 1962 and also starred Claude Rains, Anthony Quinn, Omar Sharif and Alec Guiness.
