Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Ginger Rogers won the Best Actress Award for her role in which movie?

Answer: Kitty Foyle

This was the one and only Oscar for Ginger Rogers in a soap-opera type role of a poor girl who falls in love with a rich man (Dennis Morgan). Nothing unusual then or today.
2. Jennifer Jones won her Academy Adward for which film?

Answer: Song Of Bernadette

She was nominated for the award for "Love Is A Many-Splendored Thing" but lost to Anna Magnani for "The Rose Tattoo".
3. In 1948 Jane Wyman won the Best Actress award for her role in which film?

Answer: Johnny Belinda

This film was a very interesting story of a deaf-mute who is raped and becomes pregnant but cannot explain who by or what happened. Lew Ayres portrays the doctor who helps her. Agnes Moorehead and Charles Bickford play her parents. Good film.
4. In 1939, Vivien Leigh won her Best Actress award for "Gone With The Wind" but for what film did she win her second award?

Answer: A Streetcar Named Desire

She won her award for her role as Blanche DuBois but the film will always be known as Marlon Brando's rising star. He won a nomination but lost the award to Humphrey Bogart for "The African Queen".
5. In 1946, Olivia De Havilland won her first Academy Award for Best Actress in "To Each His Own". For what film did she win her second award?

Answer: The Heiress

This was a wonderful story of a shy, naive young woman who is protected and verbally abused by her rich father (Ralph Richardson). She falls in love with a handsome young man (Montgomery Clift) who is also penniless and her father opposes the marriage because he is a fortune hunter. Worth seeing.
6. Loretta Young won her one and only Academy Award for which film?

Answer: The Farmer's Daughter

This was a silly comedy of an outspoken farm girl who goes into politics. Not worth seeing! The other actresses nominated in 1947 were Joan Crawford for "Possessed", Susan Hayward for "Smash Up", Dorothy McGuire in "Gentleman's Agreement" and Rosalind Russell in "Mourning Becomes Electra". Not a good choice.
7. Before she became Princess of Monaco, Grace Kelly won an Academy Award for what film?

Answer: The Country Girl

In 1954, Grace Kelly portrays the wife of a has-been entertainer who has a drinking problem and is being encouraged to make a comeback. Bing Crosby is the husband and William Holden is the director who wants him as the lead in his new musical. Fine film and well done.
8. Claudette Colbert won her Academy Award for Best Actress for what film?

Answer: It Happened One Night

This film not only won Claudette Colbert the Best Actress Award but it also won Clark Gable the Best Actor Award and Frank Capra, Best Director. The film won the Best Picture Of the Year Award.
9. Joan Fontaine won her one and only Best Actress Award for what film?

Answer: Suspicion

This was a film about a naive woman who marries a man and has the feeling that he is going to kill her. How could anyone think Cary Grant could be a killer?
10. Ingrid Bergman won her first Best Actress Award for "Gaslight". For what film did she win her second Best Actress Award?

Answer: Anastasia

She won the Best Supporting Actress for "Murder On The Orient Express". She was nominated for "For Whom The Bells Toll" but lost to Jennifer Jones for "The Song Of Bernadette". She was also nominated for "Joan Of Arc" but lost to Jane Wyman for "Johnny Belinda".
