Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In which movie did O'Toole make his film debut?

Answer: The Savage Innocents

He appeared in the stage production of 'The Long and the Short and the Tall', but not the movie. His performance in 'The Day they Robbed the Bank of England' persuaded David Lean to offer him 'Lawrence of Arabia'.
2. Who said that if O'Toole had been any prettier, the movie would have had to be called 'Florence of Arabia'?

Answer: Noel Coward

Actually, as one reviewer pointed out, there are parts of 'Dr. Zhivago' where Julie Christie looks a tad like O'Toole in 'Lawrence'.
3. Some years after 'Lawrence', O'Toole and Omar Sharif starred together in another movie, again produced by Sam Spiegel. What was it called?

Answer: The Night of the Generals

Both played German army officers (improbably in Sharif's case) in this disappointing 1967 adaptation of Hans Helmut Kirst's book, directed by Anatole Litvak.
4. 'Man of La Mancha' reunited O'Toole with one of his 'Lion in Winter' co-stars. Who was it?

Answer: John Castle

Sadly, Castle's career never lived up to the promise hinted at in his performance as the bitter, scheeming, Prince Geoffrey in 'TLIW'. His other major credits include 'Antony and Cleopatra' (1973) and the TV series 'I Claudius' and 'The Lost Empires'.
5. O'Toole's former wife, Sian Phillips (no mean actress herself) appeared with him in several films. True or false?

Answer: True

Phillips and O'Toole appeared together in 'Becket', 'Murphy's War', 'Goodbye Mr. Chips', and 'Under Milk Wood'. Phillips is best known for her performance as Livia in 'I Claudius'.
6. O'Toole and Richard Burton teamed up memorably in 'Becket', both of them winning Oscar nominations. Around nine years later, they were far less memorable when they appeared together in another film, based on a radio play by one of Britain's better known playwrights. What was it called?

Answer: Under Milk Wood

This film version of the Dylan Thomas 'play for voices' did not leave a lasting impression. Interestingly enough, both actors' spouses at the time - Sian Phillips and Elizabeth Taylor - also appeared in the movie.
7. In 'My Favourite Year', our boy played a drunken film-star about to make his live television debut. The movie is reportedly based on Mel Brooks' experiences with a major Hollywood star in the 1950's. Who?

Answer: Errol Flynn

8. In which of these movies based on a Shakespeare play did O'Toole star?

Answer: None

Odd that he has no Shakespeare film credits to his name. But then, after his disastrous stage 'Macbeth' at the beginning of the 1980's, doing a Shakespeare role is probably not his favourite topic of conversation.
9. O'Toole has been nominated 7 times for an best-acting Oscar, and has never won. He can take what little comfort there is in knowing he sometimes lost to a peer of the acting profession. Which of the following has never beaten him to an Oscar?

Answer: Richard Burton

Like O'Toole, Burton never won an Oscar, although, like O'Toole, he was nominated seven times (one of the nominations, however, being for Best Supporting Actor).
10. Finally, for which of the following movies was O'Toole NOT nominated for an Oscar?

Answer: Lord Jim

For 'Becket' he lost to Rex Harrison ('My Fair {Lady');} 'The Ruling Class' saw him beaten by Marlon Brando ('The {Godfather');} 'Goodbye, Mr. Chips' saw him lose to John Wayne ('True Grit').
