Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Towards the end of this 1982 film, the actor Rutger Hauer spoke his final words: "I've... seen things... you people wouldn't believe. Attack ships on fire off the shoulder of Orion; I watched c-beams glitter in the dark near the Tannhäuser Gate... All those... moments... will be lost, in time, like... tears... in... rain. Time... to die." What was the name of the film?

Answer: Blade Runner

Rutger Hauer played the replicant Roy Batty, who had just saved the life of Deckard (Harrison Ford's character), who had been hunting Batty and his fellow replicants. On dying, Batty released a white dove (like the one in the photo) he had been holding.
2. "Carpe diem. Seize the day, boys. Make your lives extraordinary." So whispered Robin Williams as maverick English teacher John Keating. In which 1989 film?

Answer: Dead Poets Society

The teacher John Keating inspires his class through the medium of poetry. The quote comes when his class are standing looking at photographs of previous students who are now "fertilizing daffodils" (to use his words).
3. "Do I look like I give a damn?" No, this was not Clark Gable. This was the response to a question about whether he (played by Daniel Craig) wanted his cocktail shaken or stirred. What was the 2006 film?

Answer: Casino Royale

Daniel Craig appeared in all these films. In "Casino Royale" Daniel Craig's James Bond had just lost his $10 million stake money in a poker game so the response was perhaps understandable. The photo shows a vodka martini cocktail, Bond's signature drink which he normally had served shaken, not stirred. The film was the third film adaptation of the book and Craig's first as James Bond.
4. President Ronald Reagan used the phrase "Go ahead, make my day" for a 1985 speech, however he was not the first. What was the name of the 1983 American action movie, featuring homicide inspector Harry Callahan who popularised the phrase?

Answer: Sudden Impact

"Sudden Impact" was the fourth film in the "Dirty Harry" series, featuring Clint Eastwood in the lead role. The catchphrase comes early in the film when a robber takes a hostage. The robber wisely decides to surrender. The Italian language version of the film takes its title from the phrase.

The other films listed were directed by Clint Eastwood.
5. In which 1979 film was Terry Jones less than flattering when he said: "He's not the Messiah. He's a very naughty boy!"?

Answer: Life of Brian

In the film, Terry Jones plays Brian's mother (amongst other roles) and is addressing a crowd who have gathered in front of their house proclaiming Brian to be their Messiah.

The full title of the film is "Monty Python's Life of Brian", hence the photo of a python. All answers were films made by the Monty Python comedy team.
6. Donald Sutherland's character President Snow is discussing strategy with one of his minions: "Hope. It is the only thing stronger than fear. A little hope is effective. A lot of hope is dangerous. A spark is fine, as long as it's contained." Which of the following is the name of this 2012 film?

Answer: The Hunger Games

"The Hunger Games" was based on the first book of a trilogy by Suzanne Collins. President Snow was a ruthless man and used the Hunger Games as a form of social control over the satellite districts. He was known for wearing a genetically-modified white rose. He also uses it as a symbol of his presence to Katniss Everdeen, the heroine.

Flowers make a few appearances in the books and film. Katniss is the common name of an aquatic plant of the Sagittaria genus. Sagittaria comes from the Latin for armed with bow and arrows, which is appropriate considering her prowess with the weapon.
7. Which Peter Jackson-directed film from 2002 does the quote "My precious" come from?

Answer: The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers

Peter Jackson made six fantasy films covering the world of Middle-earth as described by JRR Tolkien in his books 'The Hobbit' and 'The Lord of the Rings'. The future of this civilisation revolves around a magical ring known as the 'One Ring'. The hobbit Gollum, who possessed it for many years, repeatedly refers to it as 'My precious' or 'precious'.

All films listed were directed by Peter Jackson.
8. "My mama always said, 'Life was like a box of chocolates. You never know what you're gonna get.'" Following the exploits of Tom Hanks' character through nearly four decades of American history, what is the name of the 1994 film with this quote?

Answer: Forrest Gump

The film is based on a book of the same name by Winston Groom. It features a simple but good-hearted character and his story in the latter half of the 20th century. Tom Hanks' performance as Forrest Gump won him an Oscar, one of six won by the film. Hanks appeared in all the films listed.
9. "Man who catch fly with chopstick accomplish anything." What is the name of the 1984 film, with this chopstick quote, about an underdog coming out on top?

Answer: The Karate Kid

The scene opens with Mr Miyagi attempting to catch a fly with chopsticks. Daniel, his trainee, asks if he can try and when he succeeds, Mr Miyagi gets up in apparent disgust and puts it down to beginner's luck. As for the photo, 'karate' can be translated as 'empty hand' from Japanese.
10. From 1991 comes this movie quote: "A census taker once tried to test me. I ate his liver with some fava beans and a nice chianti." Which film has this cannibalistic flavour?

Answer: The Silence of the Lambs

Anthony Hopkins played the psychologist and serial killer Hannibal Lecter opposite Jodie Foster's Clarice Starling, an FBI trainee, in the 1991 film. All films listed are part of the Hannibal Lecter franchise with Hopkins appearing as Lecter in all of the films listed except "Manhunt" (1986). "Red Dragon" (2002) is a remake of "Manhunt".
