Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. (1977) "Travelling through space ain't like dusting crops boy." - Han Solo

Answer: Star Wars

"Star Wars" treated moviegoers to a classic story of inter-galactic cops and robbers. We watched in awe as a small band of pure-hearted rebels fought back against the evil clutches of the Emperor, winning a significant victory in the destruction of the Empire's weapon of mass destruction - the Death Star.
This line was said early in the movie, when Luke and Obi Wan were trying to return the droids to Alderan. As they attempted to begin their journey, they found themselves under attack by Imperial spaceships. Han needed time to prepare to make the jump into hyper-space, time that he wasn't being given. Luke was critical of Han's piloting, and Han responded with this quote.
George Lucas directed the then virtually unknown Harrison Ford to stardom with this incredible film.
2. (1995) "Houston, we have a problem." - Jim Lovell

Answer: Apollo 13

Ron Howard gives us the real story of the failed Apollo moon mission. An explosion during a routine oxygen stir caused the astronauts to lose precious oxygen and energy. It soon became apparent that losing the moon landing was not going to be the worst of their problems - bringing the astronauts home alive was.
This line is said by astronaut Jim Lovell, just after the explosion, as he is communicating the problem to Houston control.
Swigert said that they had a problem first, but not to Houston.
3. (1975) "I'm just a sweet transvestite, from Transsexual, Transylvania." - Dr. Frank-N-Furter

Answer: The Rocky Horror Picture Show

Brad and Janet have no idea about what they're getting themselves into, when they call at the mansion to get in out of the rain. Dr. Frank-N-Furter, a flamboyant transsexual from another planet, exposes them to sights, sounds, and sensations that they've never known before. At the end, his loyal servants dispose of him, turn the house into a rocket and return to their own distant planet.
This line is sung by Dr. Frank-N-Furter soon after Brad and Janet arrive, by way of introducing himself.
4. (1979) "Cargo and ship destroyed. I should reach the frontier in about 6 weeks. With a little luck the network will pick me up. This is Ripley, last survivor of the Nostromo, signing off." - Ripley

Answer: Alien

Responding to an S.O.S. a mining crew unknowingly brings an alien monster on board ship. As it grows, so does its strength and ferociousness, and before long Ripley is the only crew member left alive.
This quote is from the very end of the movie, when she and the cat hunker down in an escape pod to a hibernated sleep, after everything else has been destroyed in an attempt to kill off the alien.
5. (1998) "The United States Government just asked us to save the world. Anyone wanna say no?" - Harry Stamper

Answer: Armageddon

An asteroid, the approximate size of Texas, is hurtling towards the Earth, threatening to wipe out life as we know it. A crack team of deep core drilling specialists is sent up into to space to implant a nuclear device inside the asteroid, to save the world.
This quote is spoke by the head of the drilling team (played by Bruce Willis) when he presents the job offer to his team.
6. (1999) "By Grabthar's hammer, by the sons of Worvan, you shall be avenged." - Sir Alexander Dane

Answer: Galaxy Quest

The cast members of a cancelled, "Star Trek"-like television program, with a deeply devoted following, spend the rest of their careers reenacting their roles for conferences and grocery store openings. When a group of aliens, who had modeled their entire society after intercepted shows, appeals to them to help save their people from aggressive invaders, the crew suddenly finds themselves really in space, playing for stakes much higher than they had ever imagined. This line is the catch phrase of one of the characters, which he is trapped into repeating ad nauseum, for what feels to him like all eternity.
7. (1982) "He's a man from outer space and we're taking him to his spaceship." - Elliott "Well, can't he just beam up?" - Greg "This is reality Greg." - Elliott

Answer: ET: the Extra-Terrestrial

Left behind when his ship became threatened, ET is lucky that he has Elliott to look after him. Unfortunately lots of people are looking for ET, who is wasting away because of his enforced separation from his own kind. When his ship returns to retrieve him, Elliott enlists the help of friends to get ET past all the men in the space suits.
This quote occurs near the end of the movie, when Elliott is introducing ET to his brother's friends, just before they take off on their bikes.
8. (1982) "You see their young enter through the ears and wrap themselves around the cerebral cortex. This has the effect of rendering the victim extremely susceptible to suggestion. Later, as they grow, follows madness and death." - Khan

Answer: Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan

Years before Captain Kirk had left Khan and his followers marooned on an uninhabited planet, where they could not cause grief to anyone else. Now, their paths have crossed again, and Khan wants his vengeance.
This quote occurs when Khan has managed to capture Kirk's crewmember, Chekov, and is implanting a creature into Chekov's ear so that Chekov will do his bidding, and help him capture Kirk.
9. (1997) "I've just been down the gullet of an interstellar cockroach. That's one of a hundred memories I don't want." - Kay

Answer: Men in Black

The world is crawling with aliens, and most of us have no idea that they're there. The organization known as MIB exists, in secrecy, to monitor that alien life. When a Bug lands, looking to create havoc in the galaxy, drawing Earth into the middle of it, the agents of MIB spring into action to save the day.
This quote occurs near the end of the movie, when Agent Kay, played by Tommy Lee Jones, has announced his intention to retire and has asked Agent Jay, played by Will Smith, to wipe his memory clear. Jay protests, and Kay replies with the above quote.
10. It's bonus question time! What kind of travel is featured in "Alien", "Star Wars", "ET", and all these other wonderful movies?

Answer: Space

Each one of these movies, including the incorrect answer choices, involve some form of space travel, although only one of the movies, "Apollo 13", entertains us with a true story. Perhaps someday travelling across galaxies at hyperspace will really be possible, but until then, "May the force be with you."
