Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Your name isn't William, it's Willy!" Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this scene Patton is about to address a crowd of mostly old ladies in Knutsford, England, where he has been stationed just prior to the D-Day invasion. His job is to be visible and try to deceive the Germans into thinking the invasion will come at the Port-a-Calais (since the Germans consider him the best Allied tank commander and are convinced he will lead the invasion). Patton disgustedly speaks this line to his huge dog after it had been panicked by the yapping of a much smaller dog. He had originally named his dog William after William the Conqueror.
2. "I've always felt that I was destined for some great achievement; what I don't know." Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this scene General Patton has just emerged from a meeting with Major General Walter Bedell Smith (Ed Binns), where he has been told, "Ike told you to keep your mouth shut." In his speech at Knutsford, England, Patton had insulted the Russians by commenting that America and England would rule the post-war world. General Smith had added "Now it's up to General Marshall (Chief of Staff) whether you stay here as a decoy or he sends you home." Patton had commented, "He's a good man.

At least he's a fair man." After leaving the meeting, General Patton makes this quote to his aide Sgt. William George Meeks (James Edwards).
3. "Hitler's own people tried to kill him a few days ago. First thing you know, it'll be over and..." Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this scene General Patton has just arrived at General Bradley's command trailer in Normandy. On the way over from England his aide, Lt. Col. Codman (Paul Stevens), said "General Bradley wouldn't send for you unless he had something in mind." In the trailer, a desperate General Patton tells General Bradley, "I gotta get back in the war!" and adds this quote. Then he says, "I'll keep my mouth shut. I'll behave myself."

Historical Note: Rommel was suspected of involvement with the July 20, 1944 bomb plot to kill Hitler (Claus von Stauffenberg et al.) and was forced to commit suicide by poison. The bomb failed to kill Hitler (although it did badly shake him and left him increasingly paranoid). The hypocritical Nazi state then told the public the popular Rommel died of war wounds and gave him an impressive state funeral.
4. "We've been slugging through hedgerow country half an acre a day and we've got to find a way out." Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General Omar N. Bradley (Karl Malden)

In this scene General Bradley is explaining the current situation in Normandy to General Patton, after Patton is released from the doghouse. Bradley describes the plan, called Cobra, that he has been working on, designed to breakout from hedgerow country and gives General Patton command of Third Army.

Historical note: Aerial photographs of the hedgerows taken before the Allies encountered them suggested they were just minor, low dividers between farmers' fields. They actually were 5-10 feet high mounds of thick, tangled masses of interlocking tree roots, rocks and mounds of earth. The solution to cutting through them turned out to be using dozer tanks with heavy-duty "teeth" fashioned from the beach obstacles at Normandy welded to the front.
5. "You seem perfectly willing to accept this nonsense, Jodl. Why?" Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: Field Marshal Erwin Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler)

In this scene, during the Normandy invasion, German General Jodl observes American tank activity in the German rear areas and Field Marshal Erwin Rommel suggests that activity sounds like Patton. He wants to move up the Fifteenth German Army, which is held in reserve. But Jodl says no since, "The landing in Normandy is merely a diversionary maneuver. The real invasion will come at Calais and Patton will lead it. The Fuehrer says that the Fifteenth Army (stationed at Calais) is not to be moved to Normandy." When a disgusted Rommel asks the question in this quote, Jodl chuckles and says, "Because I am not prepared to dispute the Fuehrer."

Historical note: The radio messages sent by the Allied double agent Garbo and a deception program named Fortitude South, including fake inflatable planes and tanks, helped mislead the Germans that the invasion would be coming at Calais.
6. "I know I'm a prima donna. I admit it. What I can't stand about Monty is, he won't admit it." Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this scene General Patton has broken out of hedgerow country and is racing toward Germany, when General Bradley reaches him and tells him, "We'll have to cut off your supplies...gasoline, ammunition, everything. We're up against new priorities." Patton is very suspicious Monty is behind this, but General Bradley says, "The launching sites for the V-2 bombs are all in his area. Mister Churchill wants those bases destroyed. Hitler kills more civilians in London than soldiers."

Historical note: The launching site for these rockets was at Peenemunde, in Northern Germany. After the war the chief German designer, Werner von Braun, immigrated to the United States, where he (and many members of his German team) played a major role in designing the mighty Saturn V rocket that was used in the Apollo Space Program. That was the program that landed men on the moon in 1969.
7. "Why did you pick me to command?" Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this scene Patton has just been informed by General Bradley that his supplies will be cut off and diverted to Montgomery. Winston Churchill wants Montgomery to destroy the German missile-launching sites (in Monty's sector) to stop the missile attacks on London. An irate Patton says this quote and Bradley replies, "I didn't pick you. Ike picked you. You're one of the best I've got, but you don't know when to shut up."
8. "I love it. God help me I do love it so. I love it more than my life." Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this events leading up to this scene, General Patton's Third Army has continued advancing as far as it can, despite not receiving any more fuel supplies. His tanks run out of gas and just then a German column is spotted. The troops slug it out, including brutal hand-to-hand fighting. In this scene General Patton surveys the smoking scene and somberly says this quote as his aide, Lt. Col. Codman (Paul Stevens), looks on.
9. "There's absolutely no reason for us to assume that the Germans are mounting a major offense. The weather is awful and their supplies are low. The Germans haven't mounted a winter attack since Frederick the Great. Therefore I believe that's exactly what they're going to do." Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In the events leading up to this scene, Patton receives a phone call from General Bradley who says, "George, listen. I don't have time to argue. There's a lot of enemy activity up around Ardennes. No, I don't know how serious it is but Ike wants us to meet with Bedell Smith tomorrow at Verdun." Patton thinks about this and then says this quote.

Historical note: The Battle of the Bulge was launched Dec 16, 1944 through the Ardennes Forest into Luxembourg and Belgium and was Adolf Hitler's last offensive in WWII in Europe. The battle got its name because of the bulge out of the front line between Germany and the Allies (as seen on a map). The huge German King Tiger tank, which was a beast on open ground, turned out to be a liability on Belgium's narrow roads and undersized bridges.
10. "Keep 'em moving, Colonel. A man that eloquent has to be saved!" Which of these choices said this quote?

Answer: General George S. Patton Jr. (George C. Scott)

In this scene Patton has just been informed of the famous reply of General McAullife, commander of the 101st Airborne, when asked by the Germans to surrender Bastogne to them during the Battle of the Bulge (his one-word reply was, "Nuts."). When asked by General Bedell Smith at a meeting of Allied leaders if he could relieve the defenders at Bastogne, Patton said he could. He had Third Army change the direction of his attack into Germany, marched his men over 100 miles in 48 hours straight, and went into battle with no rest or hot food. As he watched the men move along, he expressed his pride in them for achieving this attack under such difficult conditions.

Historical note: Soldiers in the 101st Airborne Division (nicknamed the Screaming Eagles) were overwhelmingly outnumbered at Bastogne, but they held off the Germans with hard fighting. A 2001 TV mini-series called "Band of Brothers" described the exploits of Easy Company in this division.

Part 3 of "Quotes from "Patton"" covers from the Battle of the Bulge through the end of the movie.
