Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In what year did the movie take place?

Answer: 1936

The German Army entered the Rhineland. Jesse Owens won four Gold Medals in the Olympics. Indiana Jones was in South America, looking for a hidden temple that housed a golden idol head. All of these events took place in 1936. Both the year and the location were given at the beginning of the movie during the establishing shot.
2. Who was Indiana's love interest in the movie?

Answer: Marion

Indy (Harrison Ford) rekindled his romance with Marion Ravenwood (Karen Allen), daughter of his former professor, Dr. Ravenwood.
"Indiana Jones. I always knew some day you'd come walking back through my door. I never doubted that. Something made it inevitable. So, what are you doing here?"
3. Where did Indy first meet Ms. Ravenwood in the film?

Answer: Nepal

Indy met Marion in Nepal, after she drank a local "under the table" in a drinking game, with bets being taken on the winner's outcome. Marion's father died while doing archeological research, stranding Marion in Nepal. Indy was actually looking for Dr. Ravenwood.

Indy believed her father had a bronze piece in the shape of the sun. It was a piece he needed for the staff of Ra. With this piece, he would be able to locate the Well of Souls which would eventually lead him to the location of the Ark.
4. Indy and Sallah were discussing where the Well of Souls was located. Sitting on the table was a bowl of something. The monkey ate some of this and died because it was poisoned. Indy grabbed some. What was it?

Answer: dates

Indy threw the date in the air and Sallah grabbed it just before it reached Indy's mouth. Sallah pointed towards the dead monkey and said, "Bad dates."
5. Indy, thinking Marion was dead, was drinking his sorrows away at an Egyptian tavern where he met Belloq (Paul Freeman). Belloq said to Indy, "How odd that it should end this way for us after so many stimulating encounters. I almost regret it. Where shall I find a new adversary so close to my own level?" What was Indy's reply?

Answer: "Try the local sewer."

After this, Belloq said to Indy, "I know you despise me. We always hate in others that which we most fear in ourselves." If you remember, it was Belloq who "took" the idol from Indy in South America at the beginning of the film. Belloq planned to have Indy killed because he knew Indy could find the Ark first.

However, Sallah ran interference by sending children into the tavern to save Indy's life.
6. When Indy and Marion got out of the Well of Souls, they came across a plane with its engine running. Indy beat up the pilot, but a big man, waiting by a tent, was eager to fight with Indy. This German had the upper hand in the fight, until he was killed. How was he killed?

Answer: He was chopped up by the propeller of the plane.

Indy was lying on the ground while the German waited for him to get up. Rather than get up, Indy saw what was about to happen, and instead turned his head away while the propeller chopped the German man. Incidently, the out-of-control airplane actually ran over Harrison Ford's knee, tearing his ligaments. Rather than submit to Tunisian health care, Ford had his knee wrapped in ice and carried on.
7. Belloq and Dietrich put the Ark on a truck and drove off. Indy pursued them. What mode of transportation did he use to pursue them?

Answer: He took a horse.

Indy stole a horse and took off after the Ark. At one point, Indy was dragged under and then out behind a moving truck, hanging on by his bullwhip. This was done as a tribute to Yakima Canutt who had performed a similar stunt in John Ford's "Stagecoach" in 1939. The truck chase took eight weeks to film.
8. Indy did indeed retrieve the Ark, and Indy and Marion chartered a boat. What was the name of the boat?

Answer: Bantu Wind

After retaking the Ark, Indy and Marion departed and sailed with it on the Bantu Wind, a cargo ship bound for England.
9. When the Ark was opened, everyone was killed except Marion and Indy. How did they survive?

Answer: They closed their eyes and didn't look at the spirits.

Indy and Marion were spared because they did not watch the ritual. They shut their eyes instead and so they escaped with the Ark. One interesting note: In the original screenplay, Indy and Marion were supposed to escape as the Ark was opened. They were to run into a cave and escape on a mining car. This scene was scrapped and used in "Indiana Jones and The Temple Of Doom."
10. What happened to the Ark at the end of the movie?

Answer: It got put into a warehouse.

At the end of the movie, Indy and Marion returned safely with the Ark. In dramatic irony, the Ark was sealed in a wooden crate and stored in a giant government warehouse filled with countless other similar crates.
