At the beginning of the movie, Indiana Jones was going through a cave down in South America with someone named Satipo. Both of them were there to retrieve an object hidden somewhere in the cave. At one point, Indy told Satipo to steer clear of the light.

After Indiana Jones retrieved the object, the cave began to collapse so he and Satipo raced to get out of the place. Satipo made it over a gap and Indy told him to give him his whip so he could swing across. Satipo told Indiana to first throw him the object, which Indy did, but then he refused to give him his whip. Shortly after this, there was the famous scene in the movie where Indy ran from a boulder which nearly crushed him.

After Indy got out of the cave, he was seen being chased through the forest by a bunch of people. He swam into a lake to get to his friend, Jock, who had a nearby plane. Indy got in the plane and Jock took off. Indy noticed there was a snake in the seat so he yelled to Jock that he hated snakes.

Marion Ravenwood was in her bar one night when she saw that Indiana Jones was there. She said she knew that eventually she would see him again. Marion then asked Indy what he was doing in Nepal so he informed her that he needed an artifact which her father collected.

Right after Indiana Jones left Marion's bar, Arnold Toht and his men entered her bar. She asked Arnold what he was doing there and he said he was looking for the same object which Indiana was. Arnold stated that he hoped Indy had not gotten the object just yet for Marion's sake. Arnold nearly killed Marion then and there but Indy saved her.

After Marion's bar in Nepal burned down, she and Indy flew to Cairo, Egypt to meet up with Indy's friend, Sallah. Sallah and Indy spoke about how the Germans wanted to dig up and steal the Ark of the Covenant. Sallah mentioned to Indy that they did have an advantage to the assignment due to the resources at their disposal.

Right after Indy believed that Marion died in an explosion, he went inside a restaurant in Cairo and Dr. Rene Belloq, an archaeologist, was there. He said Indy's name so Indiana said to him that he should kill him right now. Rene informed him that where they were did not seem like a private place to carry out a killing.

Indy was done with his talk with Dr. Belloq so he stepped outside and saw that Sallah was there. Indiana mentioned to Sallah that he was not feeling well since Marion was "dead". Sallah told Indy that he heard about Marion but assured him that life moved on and so would he.

Indiana Jones scoured throughout Cairo in search of the Ark of the Covenant and he donned a disguise so he would not be caught. He went into a tent and noticed that Marion was alive and tied up there. Marion demanded that he cut her loose but Indy refused to do it, citing reasons pertaining to potential captivity for both of them. He promised Marion he would come back for her.

Midway through the movie, Rene went to the tent where Marion was being held captive and he had her ropes untied. Marion tried to escape but Rene told her she could not do that since the desert was too big for her and therefore he encouraged her to eat something.

While Marion had a couple of bites to eat, Rene showed Marion a dress and told her he would like to see her wear it. Marion put on the dress for Rene's pleasure.
