Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The basics: according to the legend that this film is based on, what will happen if you eat another man's flesh?

Answer: You will gain his strength.

When the characters of the movie start eating each other, their wounds heal unnaturally quick, and at the same time they develop an unstoppable hunger for more human flesh.

This concept builds upon the Algonquian legend of the Windigo, a cannibalistic demon who could possess men and turn them into ravenous cannibalistic monsters who ate their fellow man to steal their strength and add it to their own.

The legend has also led to the concept of the "Windigo psychosis". Persons suffering from this disorder apparently developed a huge craving for human flesh, and the disorder was once a common thing amongst the Algonquian.
2. Which of these actors does NOT play a significant part in the movie?

Answer: Lewis Arquette

DAVID Arquette, on the other hand, does play the significant part of Private Cleaves. Pearce, Carlyle and Davies brings life to Captain Boyd, Colqhoun and Private Toffler respectively.
3. One of the most remarkable things about "Ravenous" is its amazing soundtrack. The music is composed by Michael Nyman and what British rocker?

Answer: Damon Albarn

The wonderfully slightly off-key music with its strange rhythms and original choices of instruments helps give the movie a eerie, "out of order" feel.

Damon Albarn also made music for "Ordinary Decent Criminal" with Kevin Spacey and the Icelandic movie "101 Reykjavík".
4. What is Private Toffler composing the first time we meet him?

Answer: A religious hymn

Toffler is a very devoted man. His faith doesn't aid him in the end, though, as he is chased down the woods and killed to the cheery folk tones of Damon Albarn and Michael Nyman.
5. What does Colqhoun do during the night that frightens Private Toffler?

Answer: Licks Toffler's wounds

"He was licking me," is Toffler's terrified remark when the others reach his tent in the night. Colqhoun claims he was sleepwalking, and demands that his hands be tied from that time on, since he cannot be trusted.
6. Which member of the team that sets out into the woods is the first to die?

Answer: George

Colonel Hart is the first to be attacked and stabbed, but he doesn't die. Their Native American scout, George, is then shot and dies immediately. George was the one who originally told them the legend of the Windigo and warned them about digging deeper into this matter of people who were eating each other. Ironically, he is the first of the expedition to die.
7. When Reich and Boyd go into the cave, they discover that something is horribly wrong. What does not add up?

Answer: There are too many skeletons there.

There are five skeletons in the cave. However, there should only have been four, if Ives was the one who was killing them and Colqhoun escaped (which was Colqhoun's story). Upon seeing the five skeletons, Reich realizes that Colqhoun has actually killed them all and that they have been led into a trap.
8. The big turning point in the movie is when we learn that the person we have come to know as Colqhoun is actually who?

Answer: Ives

The new commander of the fort arrives, and gives Boyd an unpleasant shock when he turns out to be the very man he had chased - and shot - in the forest a couple of weeks ago.

When Ives shows up, all shaved and washed in his uniform, director Antonia Bird said she wanted him to be sexy and charismatic, so that the audience almost wanted to side with him. The film grows even more disturbing when the cannibal is an attractive, charismatic man in contrast to Colqhoun's messy, beast-like appearance.
9. What kind of dish is being prepared towards the end of the movie?

Answer: Stew a'la Major Knox

In the end, Major Knox pays the price for his drinking habit, having been so dead drunk the day Colqhoun arrived that he hardly recalls that there had been someone there, let alone the stranger's face. So he trusts Ives and ends his life as a stew.

Incidentally, the first United States Secretary of War was also a "Major Knox" (Henry Knox). He was, however, not eaten, but rather died from something he ate: he swallowed a chicken bone that got stuck in his throat and cause an infection. Three days later, he died.
10. What is the last spoken line in the movie?

Answer: "Eat or die. Eat or..."

As they lie trapped in the same bear trap, Ives tells Boyd that if he dies first, he will definitely eat him. The question is: what will Boyd do? Eat or die? Eat or die?

Actually, the movie runs for quite a few minutes after this, but Ives' dying words is the last spoken line in the film. The rest passes in silence as Boyd withstands the urge to eat - and dies.
