Prostitute Vivian Ward (Roberts) is hired by corporate raider Edward Lewis (Richard Gere) to escort him while on his stay in Los Angeles. With the wave of his magic wand (credit card) Vivian's fairy godfather/prince charming turns her into a beautiful princess. Most critics agree that Julia's performance in "Pretty Woman" made her a star.

Long time friends Michael O'Neal (Dermot Mulroney) and Julianne Potter (Roberts) made an agreement in college that if neither of them were married by age 28 that they would marry each other.
