Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "She walked off the street, into his life and stole his heart."

Answer: Pretty Woman

On a business trip to Los Angeles, Edward Lewis (Gere) picks up Vivian Ward (Roberts) - a hooker who will change his life forever. She indeed "walked off the street and stole his heart". Directed by Gary Marshall and released in 1990, the working title of this film was "$3,000".

Although this role transformed Julia Roberts into a superstar, Disney initially didn't want her in the lead and hoped to secure Meg Ryan. Both Molly Ringwald and Daryl Hannah turned down the part of Vivian Ward; while Christopher Reeve was originally considered for the Edward Lewis role.
2. "Julianne fell in love with her best friend the day he decided to marry someone else."

Answer: My Best Friend's Wedding

Commitment-shy Julianne Potter (Roberts) never knew what she wanted until she saw him walking out of her life... or rather, marrying someone else! The tagline perfectly sums up the essence of the movie which, for me, is all about lost opportunities. Julia Roberts hand-picked both Dermot Mulroney (Michael) and Cameron Diaz (Kimmy) for this 1997 film which was directed by P J Hogan.

There was an alternative ending to the movie where Julianne and Michael end up together, but test audiences didn't like it.

The director also considered ending the film with Jules meeting someone else at the wedding reception (John Corbett), but test audiences wanted to see more of George (Rupert Everett).
3. "Can the most famous film star in the world fall for the man on the street?"

Answer: Notting Hill

Anna Scott (Roberts) is the world's most famous movie star. William Thacker owns a stagnant bookstore in Notting Hill. For both, something or someone seems to be missing in their lives... can "the man on the street" be that someone for Anna, as the tagline suggests? "Notting Hill" was released in 1999 and directed by Roger Michell.

The Marc Chagall painting featured in the movie, and eventually given to William by Anna, is entitled "La Mariee" ("The Wedding") and depicts a young bride.
4. "Catch her if you can"

Answer: Runaway Bride

Director Gary Marshall reunites Richard Gere and Julia Roberts in this 1999 romantic comedy, which tells the story of Maggie (Roberts) who loves being engaged, but seems to have very cold (or is it fast?) feet when it comes to the actual wedding day. Ike (Gere) is a columnist who travels to Maryland to meet this "man-eater" and falls for her... will he be able to "catch" her? The director, Gary Marshall, plays the first baseman at the wedding.

He also played a small part in the other Gere/Roberts movie he directed ("Pretty Woman").
5. "Be there for the joy. Be there for the tears. Be there for each other."

Answer: Stepmom

The last thing on career-minded, fashion photographer Isabel's mind is family, but she tries her best to get her boyfriend's children to like her. It doesn't help that the children's natural mother is supermom, either! When she (the ex) discovers she is terminally ill, Isabel is forced to play a larger role in the kids' lives and learns the values of a family - perfectly summed up by the tagline. Rejected titles for this 1998 tearjerker (directed by Chris Columbus) include "Goodnight Moon", "Promises Kept", "See You in My Dreams" and "Always, Always".
6. "A comedy about celebrity, family and other forms of insanity."

Answer: America's Sweethearts

A veteran publicist (portrayed by Billy Crystal) tries to promote a troubled film starring an A-list couple (Cathering Zeta Jones and John Cusack) who recently suffered a very public split. The movie is filled with hilarious moments, reminiscent of the crazy world of celebrities and family fueds - indeed an insane comedy, as the tagline promise! This 2001 romatic comedy was director Joe Roth's first movie in eleven years. Robert Downey Jr was originally slated to play Eddie but John Cusack was cast instead, due to Downey's drug problems.
7. "She brought a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees."

Answer: Erin Brockovich

In a world where stories of heroes are in short supply, the story of Erin Brockovich is an inspirational reminder of the power of the human spirit. Divorced mother Erin Brockovich (Roberts) sees an injustice, takes on the bad guys and wins! As the tagline suggests, Erin brings a small town to its feet and a huge company to its knees! Julia Roberts received an unprecedented salary for her lead role in this 2000 film, making her the first woman to break the $20m barrier. Directed by Steven Soderbergh, it also won her an Oscar for best actress.
8. "Are you in or out?"

Answer: Ocean's Eleven

Directed by Steven Soderbergh, this remake of the 1960 Rat Pack film (which starred Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr and Peter Lawford) is also packed with A-list stars such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt and Matt Damon, to name a few. It's a fast-paced, slick action movie that tells the story of Danny Ocean, a gangster who rounds up 10 associates to simultaneously rob $150 million from three major Las Vegas casinos (from there the tagline: "Are you in or out?").
9. "If you believe in love at first sight, you never stop looking."

Answer: Closer

"Closer" (released in 2004 and directed by Mike Nocholls) is a bitingly funny and honest look at modern relationships, shattering old cliches as the tagline suggests. Cate Blanchett was orginally signed to play the role of Anna (now played by Julia Roberts), but due to her second pregnancy she had to drop out of the film.
10. "Some lines should not be crossed."

Answer: Flatliners

The tagline sums up the mood of the movie perfectly - some things are certainly better left unknown. Released in 1990 and directed by Joel Schumacher, "Flatliners" is one of my favourite Julia Roberts movies. She portrays Rachel Mannus, one of a group of medical students experimenting with death.

There are a number of factual errors in this movie, to name one: Asystole (the lack of cardiac activity, also known as the "flatline") is not treated with defibrillation (electric shocks) but with alternating doses of the drugs epinephrine and atropine.
