Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "I've often speculated why you don't return to America. Did you abscond with the church funds? Run off with a senator's wife? I like to think you killed a man. It's the romantic in me." Which famous Bogart film is this from?

Answer: Casablanca

"Casablanca" (1942) regularly comes in the top ten of lists of all time great films. Set in Africa in the early days of World War 2 it starred Humphry Bogart, Claude Rains and Ingrid Bergman. It is both a love story and a story of international intrigue.

The quote most associated with this film is "Play it again Sam", which is in fact a mis-quote. The line is "You played it for her, now play it for me, play it". Claude Rains, who plays Captain Renault, says this to Rick (Humphrey Bogart), whose past he has always been curious about. Renault and Rick have always had a relationship based on expediency, but by the end of the film they have become genuine friends as well.
2. "The stuff that dreams are made of" comes from which film?

Answer: The Maltese Falcon

"The Maltese Falcon" (1941) saw Peter Lorre and Sidney Greenstreet starring with Bogart, and was the first film directed by John Huston. The film received three nominations for Academy Awards. Bogart plays Sam Spade, the detective created by author Dashiell Hammett, who becomes involved in a chase to find a jewel encrusted statue, the falcon of the title.

The line is sad by Sam Spade to Detective Tom Polhaus (Ward Bond) when he picks up the falcon and asks what it is.
3. Which film has the line "One Rocco more or less isn't worth dying for"?

Answer: Key Largo

"Key Largo" (1948) was the fourth film to pair Bogart with Lauren Baccall. Bogart plays Major Frank McCloud who is visiting the widow of one of his men who died during World War 2. Lauren Bacall is Nora Temple, the widow. The film takes place in the Temple family hotel during a hurricane when the proprietors and Bogart are taken prisoner by native indians who have escaped from custody, and the rest of their gang, which includes gangster Johnny Rocco (Edward G. Robinson).

At the height of the storm Rocco offers McCloud a gun and offers to fight a duel with him. McCloud replies with the quoted line.
4. "Mr Allnut!, Mr Allnut, you may come in out of the rain". The female lead says this to Humphrey Bogart in which film?

Answer: The African Queen

"The African Queen" (1951) saw Humphrey Bogart teamed with Katherine Hepburn. Bogart is the Captain of the African Queen, an old steamboat, doing a supplies run between isolated communities in Africa. Katherine Hepburn and her brother (Robert Morley) are missionaries. Set against the backdrop of World War I the film is based around Katherine Hepburn and Humphrey Bogart taking the steamboat along treacherous waters to try to stop a German gunboat. Humphrey Bogart received the Best Actor Oscar for this film, the only one he ever won. Katherine Hepburn says this line to Humphrey Bogart when he is trying to sleep on the deck of the boat in a rainstorm.

She invited him into the covered sleeping quarters which he had given up so she could have privacy.
5. "In Hollywood it is not easy to become a star". This is from a film not always immediately associated with Bogart. Which one?

Answer: The Barefoot Contessa

Ava Gardener was the big star of "The Barefoot Contessa" (1954), playing the title role. Humphrey Bogart is Harry Dawes, a down on his luck movie producer who is hired to produce a film for a rich egocentric. Searching for a leading lady who is not well known they find Maria Vargas (Ava Gardener) dancing in a nightclub.

Her film debut is a sensation, but before this happens she makes this comment to Harry Dawes. He replies, "Ah, where is it easy?" Maria finds however that stardom does not make her happy.
6. "Aboard my ship excellent performance is standard". Based on a Herman Wouk novel, which film is this quote from?

Answer: The Caine Mutiny

"The Caine Mutiny" (1954) depicts a mutiny aboard a fictitious war ship during World War 2. The story is based on the Pulitzer prize winning novel of the same name. Humphrey Bogart plays the possibly insane Lt. Commander Queeg, with Fred MacMurray and Van Johnson as the two senior officers who are court martialled in the aftermath of the mutiny, and Jose Ferrer as the officer who defends them. Queeg says this line when addressing the ship's company before the mutiny happens.
7. "You know how to whistle, don't you Steve?". This is one of the most famous Bogart film quotes, but which film is it from?

Answer: To Have and Have Not

"To Have and Have Not" (1944) was not only the first time Lauren Bacall and Humphrey Bogart appeared together, it was also her very first film. It is set in Martinique during World War 2, shortly after the fall of France. Bogart agrees to help the French Resistance smuggle some people, and he and Lauren Bacall also have a romance.

The scene where she visits him in his room and utters the "you know how to whistle" line has become a cinema classic, and really was the start of the Bogart/Bacall magic.

She says it to Bogart as she is leaving the room; in the full quote she is telling him he can be himself with her, and if he wants her all he has to do is whistle. The film is also interesting for a small appearance by Hoagey Carmichael, songwriter of "Stardust", as a piano player who is a friend of Lauren Bacall's character.
8. "In the end, I'll see that the law gets you. And it won't be just to run you out of town. It'll be at the end of a rope." This is from a western, not something usually associated with Bogart. Can you name it please?

Answer: The Oklahoma Kid

"The Oklahoma Kid" (1939) also starred James Cagney, another actor not normally associated with westerns. Cagney is an adventurous gunslinger, the Oklahoma Kid, (Jim Kincaid) and Bogart is Whip McCord, the true villain of the film. Ward Bond, who went on to play wagonmaster Major Seth Adams in the very popular western television series "Wagon Train", also had a small part in the film. John Kincaid (Hugh Sothern) tells McCord he will see that the law catches up with him when he decides to run for Mayor and McCord offers to strike a deal with him that will give him control of all the gambling in the town. McCord frames him for murder and incites a mob to lynch him.
9. "Without me, you two would die here, more miserable than rats". Which 1948 movie is this from?

Answer: The Treasure of the Sierra Madre

"The Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) was one of the first Hollywood films to be shot on locations that was outside the United States. Although the night scenes were all studio shoots many of the day scenes were shot in Mexico. Set in the 1920s, Humphrey Bogart and Tim Holt team up with Walter Huston to go treasure hunting in the Sierra Madre mountains. John Huston, son of Walter, directed the film.

The film was selected for preservation in the National Film Registry. Walter Huston says this when he realises his two companions have no idea of how to survive in the mountains, and that without him they would stumble around lost and probably end up dead.
10. "Morning, gentlemen. Nice day for a murder." This 1938 gangster film is not immediately associated with Humphrey Bogart, but with another big star of the era. What is the film?

Answer: Angels with Dirty Faces

"Angels with Dirty Faces" (1939) is more associated with James Cagney, who plays Rocky Sullivan, a notorious gangster. Huphrey Bogart plays Jim Frazier, a crooked lawyer, who is killed by Cagney. The irony of the film is that Cagney killed Frazier to prevent his friend, and one time accomplice, from being killed by him.

His friend, Jerry Connolly (Pat O'Brien) is now a priest helping young boys to keep away from a life of crime. In the end Cagney is executed for the killing. He says this line to Frazier and his accomplice shortly before killing them.
