Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. No quiz on San Francisco films would be complete without "Bullitt" (1968). What type of car was Steve McQueen driving during one of the most spectacular car chases in film history?

Answer: Ford Mustang 390

The Ford Mustang was one of the classic muscle cars of the 1960s, with a 390 cubic inch V8 engine. Ford actually brought back a version of the car in 2001 and another revamp in 2008-2009. The bad guys were the ones in the Dodge Charger.

The chase sequence begins on Army Street with two hitmen following Bullitt. After a few minutes, he manages to outmaneuver and get behind them. Once Bullitt is chasing the hitmen, the action revs up with a high speed chase all across San Francisco. The chase is a masterpiece of editing, with sequences shot all around the city woven into one consistent thread.

The high speed chase starts at Chestnut street near the San Francisco Art Institute. It concludes with the bad guys overturning their car before plowing into a gas station, which explodes in a massive fireball.

Other filming locations include Grace Cathedral Episcopal Church, Bullitt's apartment on Taylor Street, the Kennedy Hotel and the San Francisco Police Department. The film was shot from February 12 to May 25, 1968.
2. The Hitchcock masterpiece "Vertigo" (1958) takes place almost entirely in San Francisco. What blonde Hitchock favorite played the woman that Scottie Ferguson (James Stewart) becomes obsessed with?

Answer: Kim Novak

Kim Novak, a native of Chicago, was born in 1933. She had several small film roles in 1954 before her big breakout in "Picnic" in 1955. She is probably best known for playing Madeline Elster/Judy Barton in "Vertigo". The film is a complex thriller in which Novak plays both an accomplice and ultimately victim of a web of intrigue and murder.

"Vertigo" stars James Stewart as a policeman suffering from acrophobia and vertigo, which forces him to leave the department. The film showcases locations all around San Francisco, including the Legion of Honor art museum and Fort Point National Historic Site.

Principal filming took place in September of 1957. In 2012, the "Sight and Sound" poll of film critics named "Vertigo" as the best film of all time.
3. "Dirty Harry" (1971) was one of the all-time great San Francisco films, starring Clint Eastwood as the ultimate macho cop. What was the name of the serial killer terrorizing San Francisco?

Answer: Scorpio

The Scorpio killer was played by Andrew Robinson. His first victim was a young woman in a swimming pool. His second is a police officer dressed as a priest. His third victim is a young woman Scorpio kidnapped. In his final criminal act, Scorpio hijacks a bus filled with school children. Harry Callahan (Eastwood) tracks down and kills Scorpio - after the immortal "Do you feel lucky" speech, of course.

Director Don Siegel makes the most of his San Francisco location, taking a visual tour of the city. Locations include the Holiday Inn on Kearney Street, City Hall, and the Hall of Justice. One key confrontation between Callahan and Scorpio takes place in Kezar Stadium, the former home of the San Francisco 49ers football team. The final scene between Callahan and Scorpio took place in Larkspur, in Marin County. Filming took place between April 18 and June 20, 1971.
4. "The Conversation" (1974) stars Gene Hackman as a surveillance expert. What San Francisco location is the site for the conversation of the title?

Answer: Union Square

Union Square is a one block park located between Geary, Powell, Post and Stockton Streets. It gets the name Union because it was the site of pro-Union war rallies during the US Civil War. The park is notable for the 1903 Dewey monument, with the Greek goddess of victory Nike. Underneath it is the world's first underground parking garage, built in 1941.

Alfred Hitchcock used Union Square in both "Vertigo" (1958) and "The Birds" (1963).

The centerpiece of the film is a conversation which takes place in Union Square, and which featured an incredibly complicated multi-person surveillance team. Harry Caul, the master recording specialist played by Hackman, records a conversation in which an adulterous couple are discussing a murder plot. The scene was shot by master cinematographer Haskell Wexler, who was later fired by Coppola. The couple in the conversation are Frederic Forrest and Cindy Williams.

"The Conversation" was directed by Francis Ford Coppola. It was nominated for Best Picture, but lost out to Coppola's "Godfather Part 2" (1974).

Alamo Square is noted for its "painted ladies" and is used in the opening of the TV series "Full House" (1987-95). Ghirardelli Square is notable as home of one of the world's best chocolate companies. Washington Square Park is featured in several scenes in "Dirty Harry" and is also in the remake of "Bedazzled" (2000).
5. The noir classic "DOA" (1950) features a man investigating his own murder. What is the name of the bar where he was poisoned?

Answer: The Fisherman

The name of the bar was The Fisherman. The scenes were filmed in Justin Herman Plaza, which is part of Embarcadero Park.

"DOA" stars Edmond O'Brien as a man investigating his own murder. He is poisoned with luminous toxin, for which there is no antidote. The medical scenes took place at Sacramento and Jones streets and Southern Pacific Memorial Hospital. O'Brien is an accountant who becomes involved in a scheme involving iridium smuggling; he is killed because he is a loose end in a criminal conspiracy.

Notable scenes in San Francisco include O'Brien running down Market Street, at the Ferry Building, and at the West St Francis Hotel. The film is recognized as classic film noir and was named by the National Film Preservation Board to its registry in 2004.

Just for the record, The Raven is Mation Ravenwood's bar in "Raiders of the Lost Ark" (1981) and the Café American is Rick Blaine's bar in "Casablanca" (1942).
6. Sean Penn won an Academy Award for playing San Francisco politician Harvey Milk. What movement was Milk an iconic figure in?

Answer: Gay Rights

"Milk" (2008) was directed by Gus Van Sant, and tells the story of Harvey Milk, the first openly gay elected official in the state of California. Penn won his second Best Actor Oscar for his work in the film. The film was nominated for eight Oscars and won two, Penn and screenplay writer Dustin Lance Black.

Harvey Milk moved to San Francisco in 1972, and became an icon in the city's gay community. He was elected city supervisor in 1977 and served for 11 months before being assassinated by former Supervisor Dan White on November 27, 1978. White also shot Mayor George Moscone.

The film was shot on location in San Francisco and features many of the actual locations where Milk lived, worked and campaigned. Market Street and Castro was the site for voter rallies and gay rights demonstrations both in the film and real life. The scenes of Milk's apartment were shot on lower Haight Street. The speech scenes were shot at Marine Fisherman's Union Headquarters.

"Milk" was filmed between January 21 and March 19, 2008.
7. "Mrs Doubtfire" (1993) stars Robin Williams as a father/housekeeper. What is the first name of the title character?

Answer: Euphegenia

"Mrs Doubtfire" stars Robin Williams as Daniel Hillard, a man undergoing a bitter custody battle with his wife. When he is denied visitation rights, he takes the extreme step of disguising himself as an elderly Scottish woman and serving as a housekeeper. Williams skill as an actor makes the character empathetic and believable. Sally Field plays his ex-wife, and Harvey Fierstein has a great supporting role as Hillard's brother.

Euphegenia is a Scottish name that comes from Greek, it means auspicious speech or good reputation. Aileana means "light bearer" in Greek. Inghean is Scottish for daughter. Edine is Scottish referring to a girl from Edinburgh.

"Mrs Doubtfire" was filmed in San Francisco from March 22 to July 1, 1993. Locations include 2640 Steiner Street (the Hillard home), the San Mateo County History Museum in Redwood City (which stood in for a courtroom) and Candlestick Park.

The film won an Academy Award for Best Makeup and Williams won a Golden Globe for his performance.
8. While "48 Hours" (1982) is set in San Francisco, only some it was filmed there. Which scene was actually shot in the city by the bay?

Answer: The subway station scene

The subway station scene was shot at the Church Street Muni Station. Two huge plot errors pointed out by native San Franciscans: 1) Church Street is one of the least used stations in the system and would never have the huge crowds shown in the film and 2) trains on the Muni system never run as frequently as show in the film.

Torchy's Bar was shot in Los Angeles. Lincoln Heights Jail in Los Angeles stood in for San Quentin, where Reggie Hammond was an inmate, and the Park Plaza Hotel in Los Angeles stood in for police headquarters. While many scenes were shot in Los Angeles, there is still enough San Francisco to make it an authentic San Francisco film.

"48 Hours" was Eddie Murphy's debut film. He stars as Reggie Hammond, a convict who teams up with grizzled cop Nick Nolte to hunt down a cop killer in San Francisco. The Torchy's Bar scene is famous for Murphy intimidating red necks by posing as a police officer.
9. Much of "Star Trek IV" (1986) is set in the Bay Area. What extinct species are the crew of the Enterprise attempting to rescue in the film?

Answer: whale

"Star Trek IV" features the crew of the Enterprise returning to Earth to find it threatened by an extra-terrestrial probe searching for humpback whales. In order to save humanity, the crew return to San Francisco in 1986 to track down some whales. The rest of the film is about their adventures trying to obtain the whales and return them to the future.

The Cetacean Institute, ostensibly in Sausalito, was actually filmed at the Monterrey Aquarium, about 120 miles south of San Francisco. The early scenes with the crew wandering around San Francisco were shot in the North Bay area. The film features numerous shots of the Golden Gate Bridge, including Kirk and Spock crossing it in a bus (punk rocker scene) and walking in Fort Point National Historic Site along Marine Drive.

The scenes of the "USS Enterpise" (a real US navy ship) were actually filmed aboard the USS Ranger. And those scenes were not shot in Alameda, but in Coronado, near San Diego. The Ranger was later used in "Top Gun".

Nicholas Meyer, who co-wrote and produced the film, initially resisted setting it in San Francisco, as his 1979 film "Time after Time" had also taken place there.
10. The 1978 remake of "Invasion of the Body Snatchers" has its final scene at what San Francisco landmark?

Answer: San Francisco City Hall

The last scene of the 1978 film is set at City Hall, with its long row of empty sycamore trees. The Embarcadero does play an important role in the film, as the location where Jack Bellicec (Jeff Goldblum) sacrifices himself to the alien zombies. Telegraph Hill is the site of Matthew Bennell's house, specifically 1227 Montgomery Street. Alamo Square Park is at the start of the movie, where the alien invasion begins.

The film is a remake of the 1956 science fiction classic, about pods taking over human beings and turning them into emotionless clones. The 1978 film is reset in San Francisco. Donald Sutherland is Matthew Bennell, a city health inspector, who teams up with Elizabeth Driscoll (Brooke Adams) to investigate the alien invasion.

The 1978 film makes several nods to the 1956 original. Kevin McCarthy, star of the 1956 film, has a cameo as a man giving warning. The scene takes place at Eddy and Leavenworth, in the Tenderloin district. Don Siegel, director of the 1956 film, has a cameo as a cab driver towards the end of the film. Sutherland and Brooke Adams are showing genuine fear in the scene because Siegel had bad vision and was not wearing his glasses while driving.

The 1978 film was nominated for eight Saturn Awards and won for Best Director (Phil Kaufman) and Best Sound. It was also nominated for several prominent writing awards.
