Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Here's to swimmin' with bow-legged women."

Answer: Jaws

The movie that created the Summer Blockbuster phenemenon...and still the best of the lot. This charming line came from Quint, the colourful fisherman who ended up as the Great White shark's dessert. The character was made his own by British actor Robert Shaw, but the role could have gone to Lee Marvin or Sterling Hayden if director Steven Spielberg had got his way. Shaw is credited with writing the final version of Quint's memorable 'USS Indianapolis' monologue.
2. "I did not do anything wrong! The hatch just blew!"

Answer: The Right Stuff

Philip Kaufman's 1983 epic about the early years of the U.S. space program was based on a novel by Tom Wolfe. This line was spoken by actor Fred Ward, who played Virgil 'Gus' Grissom, the second American in space. The escape hatch on Grissom's re-entry capsule, 'Liberty Bell 7', blew prematurely on the astronaut's return to Earth and the craft was lost under the waves of the Atlantic Ocean.

Although his part in this incident was questioned by some, Grissom was found to be blameless and he continued to play a key role in the program. Tragically, he died in the 'Apollo 1' fire at Cape Kennedy in January, 1967, along with Edward White and Roger Chaffee.
3. "Peace, love, dope! Now get the hell out of here!"

Answer: Field Of Dreams

Reluctant farmer Ray Kinsella (Kevin Costner) hears a disembodied voice telling him, "If you build it, he will come". He decides to dig up his crops and construct a baseball field, which leads to various ghostly figures rolling up for a game. Kinsella tries to persuade reclusive 60's author Terrence Mann (James Earl Jones) that he has a part to play in his work and meets with this response.

In the novel on which the film is based, the reclusive author was real-life writer J.D. Salinger, who penned 'Catcher In The Rye'.

The character was re-named for the movie after Salinger threatened legal action.
4. "I'm walkin' here! I'm walkin' here!"

Answer: Midnight Cowboy

This line, spoken by Dustin Hoffman as 'Ratso' Rizzo, was ad-libbed by the star when he was almost hit by a New York taxi while shooting a scene. John Schlesinger's film won the Best Picture Oscar at the 1970 Academy Awards. That same year, Schlesinger picked up the Best Director statuette and was also appointed a CBE (Commander of the British Empire). He died, aged 77, in July, 2003.
5. "If we bring a little joy into your humdrum lives, it makes us feel as if our hard work ain't been in vain for nothing."

Answer: Singin' In The Rain

Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) and Lina Lamont (Jean Hagen) are a famous romantic pairing of silent cinema. Unfortunately, the coming of sound spells disaster for the shrill-voiced, intellectually-challenged Miss Lamont, whose declaration this is. Debbie Reynolds plays the young actress brought in to dub her lines. Ironically, Reynold's voice was dubbed by Betty Noyes in some of the movie's songs.
6. "Somebody once wrote: 'Hell is the impossibility of reason.' That's what this place feels like...Hell."

Answer: Platoon

New arrival Chris Taylor, played by Charlie Sheen, soon has cause to regret volunteering for service in the Vietnam War. Best Picture winner at the 1987 Academy Awards, the film was based on director Oliver Stone's own experiences in that conflict. Stone was awarded the Bronze Star and a Purple Heart in Vietnam, and the Best Director Oscar for 'Platoon'.
7. "A suicide telegram? Who sends a suicide telegram?"

Answer: The Odd Couple

"Felix, the nut, that's who!" The neurotic Felix Ungar (Jack Lemmon) moves in with his slovenly pal Oscar Madison (Walter Matthau) after being kicked out by his wife and bungling a bid to kill himself. Before you can say "F.U.", Felix has broken up the weekly poker game and pushed Oscar to the edge of reason with his obsessive behaviour.

The movie version of Neil Simon's play was originally to have been directed by Billy Wilder, but he dropped out after a disagreement with the writer and was replaced by Gene Saks.
8. "By Gad, sir, you are a character. There's never any telling what you'll say or do next, except that it's bound to be something astonishing!"

Answer: The Maltese Falcon

Spoken by the scheming treasure-hunter Kasper Gutman (Sydney Greenstreet), to the equally scheming private-eye Sam Spade (Humphrey Bogart), in John Huston's 1941 version of the Dashiell Hammett novel. Although a veteran of the stage, this movie marked Greenstreet's silver screen debut, at the age of 62.

His film career lasted a mere eight years, including a return match with Bogart in 'Casablanca', and he died in 1954.
9. "I'm going to pick a fight."

Answer: Braveheart

Mel Gibson's 1995 movie tells the story of Sir William Wallace's heroic fight to drive the English invaders from Scotland. In actuality, little documentary evidence exists on Wallace. Scot writers of the time had a tendency to romanticize his life, with English scribes equally inclined to demonise the man. We do know Sir William routed the army of King Edward I at Stirling Bridge in 1297, before suffering the same fate at the hands of the English the following year at Falkirk.

In 1305 he was hanged by the neck, disembowelled and decapitated in London for the wartime murder of civilians.

His body was then quartered and displayed throughout the kingdom as a warning to others who would dare oppose Edward.
10. "A naked American man stole my balloons."

Answer: An American Werewolf In London

Young American tourist David Kessler (David Naughton) has been attacked on the Yorkshire moors by a werewolf, heard his dead friend advise him to commit suicide and spent a night ripping Londoners apart. Worse still, he's woken in a zoo to find lycanthrope's have no need for boxer shorts. Director John Landis wrote the screenplay for this 1981 film twelve years earlier, while working in Yugoslavia as a production assistant on the movie 'Kelly's Heroes'.

The 19 year old was apparently inspired by the local Gypsy custom of burying their dead in coffins filled with garlic to prevent them returning to haunt the living.
