Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We'll start with the villain in the very first full length animated Disney film - "Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs". The Evil Queen is certainly proud of her beauty and her skill with magic. However, this alone would not have caused her downfall. It is her commission of a second deadly sin that causes her ultimate failure. Which of the deadly sins actually gets her in trouble?

Answer: Envy

The Queen's hostility towards Snow White stems from her jealousy at being replaced as "the fairest in the land". According to Dante's "Inferno", the envious are punished in hell by having their eyes sewn closed with wires.
2. How about Lady Tremaine, the stepmother from "Cinderella"? She forces poor Cinderella to do all of the chores while raising no more than a finger. What deadly sin does she commit?

Answer: Sloth

As is the case in many of these movies, the traits of the hero are in direct, pointed contrast with those of the villain. The mice and Cinderella are constantly demonstrating industriousness and responsibility. Lady Tremaine is also certainly guilty of excessive pride in thinking that her ugly daughters are fit brides for Prince Charming!
3. Maleficent from "Sleeping Beauty" is one of the major Disney villains for good reason - she commits at least four of the deadly sins during the course of the film. Envy, sloth and pride all play a part, but at the fiery end which deadly sin does her in?

Answer: Wrath

I've been somewhat miffed before at being excluded from a guest list but Maleficent takes it to extremes! It is her anger that gets her in trouble in the end.

When Prince Philip escapes her dungeon and evades her many magical traps, Maleficent's anger causes her to resort to brute force and change into a dragon to fight the prince. The Prince would not have been able to defeat her mind or her magic, but when faced with hand to hand (or hand to claw) combat, he was able to kill her. Rash decisions made in anger frequently deprive us of our best tools to solve a problem.
4. Gaston tries to primp and flex his way into Belle's heart in "Beauty and the Beast." He is a textbook case for which deadly sin?

Answer: Pride

They say pride goes before a fall. In Gaston's case it is quite an impressive fall! As is the case with Cinderella, the villain's flaw stands in stark contrast to the traits of the hero. The Beast's hard-earned humility, which contrasts with the boastful pride of his rival Gaston, is what gains him Belle's love and release from the curse.
5. If Judge Frollo from "The Hunchback of Notre Dame" were to visit the cathedral for confession, which of the seven deadly sins might he confess to the priest?

Answer: Lust

One understandably has to go far afield to find a villain brought down by lust in a Disney movie. Frollo is mostly done in by his deceit and his tendency to take things much to far, but his inner conflict over his lust for Esmerelda drives him to a heightened level of activity that might otherwise not occur.
6. Scar in "The Lion King" has some pretty sinful henchmen, who eventually cause his downfall. Hopper from "A Bug's Life" has a similar fault. What sin plagues Hopper and the pesky hyenas?

Answer: Gluttony

The hyenas in "The Lion King" get on board with Scar's plot because he promises them lots of food. They definitely get their food, but probably not as Scar intended! The lazy grasshoppers from "A Bug's Life" demand double the normal quantity of food from the ants, and their relentless pursuit of it leads to their eventual downfall.
7. This next deadly sin may be the most common fault among the Disney villains. You can spot it in Cruella De Vil from "101 Dalmatians", Clayton from "Tarzan", and Ratcliffe from "Pocahontas". Please name it.

Answer: Greed

In "101 Dalmatians," Cruella De Vil's greed for a fine fur coat obscures any sort of esteem she might have for the lives of the Dalmatian puppies. Clayton's greed in "Tarzan" is for the money he would earn in exhibiting Tarzan's gorilla friends back home in England. In "Pocahontas", Ratcliffe comes to the America seeking only gold, and becomes hostile to Pocahontas' tribe when he believes they are hiding it all.

Perhaps it is ironic that one of the wealthiest companies in the world has made so many films instructing children about the evils of greed, or perhaps it is just simpler to establish that someone is "evil" by making them greedy.
8. Sometimes the sins can cause trouble without the villain even appearing on screen. In fact, the greed and gluttony of an invisible enemy cause two major catastrophes in the course of one Disney film! Which film am I thinking of?

Answer: Bambi

"Bambi" follows the life of a young deer growing up in the forest with his mother. As he grows to adulthood, he faces major challenges that prove his mettle and establish him as a worthy heir to his father, the Great Prince of the Forest. The most dreadful moment in a Disney film may well be the death of Bambi's mother at the hands of human hunters.

The forest fire that serves as the climax of "Bambi" is also caused by humans.
9. It's not only Disney villains who are guilty of committing the seven deadly sins! Even the heroes falter sometimes. Which hero/sin pairing is incorrect?

Answer: Lilo / Sloth & Gluttony

It's rare that a hero commits one of the "deadlies", but when he or she does, redemption usually becomes a central part of the plot.

Kuzco in "The Emperor's New Groove" thinks that Pacha would be pleased to have his house replaced by Kuzco's summer home. This mistake, made out of pride and greed, drives most of the plot of the film.

Hercules becomes vulnerable to Hades out of his lust for Megara. His willingness to sacrifice his strength for her causes the entire climax of the film. Phil tries to warn him of the danger, but Hercules angrily pushes him away.

Tinkerbell in "Peter Pan" is envious of the attention Wendy gets from Peter. Her jealousy causes her to reveal the hiding place of Peter and the Lost Boys to Captain Hook.

Lilo from "Lilo and Stitch" does not display sloth or gluttony. She spends most of the film rushing around to clean up after her alien friend, and is never shown asking for too much of anything.

Can you think of any others who endanger themselves with a deadly sin?
10. There is one villain who tops them all in his list of deadly sins. This busy villain is is ENVIOUS of the power of the king, and PROUD enough to think himself a suitable replacement. Which Disney villain manages to commit a whopping six out of the seven deadly sins in the course of one movie?

Answer: Jafar

The evil vizier from "Aladdin" is an epic character, with failings of biblical proportions. When one is busily committing six out of seven deadly sins in under two hours, it's no wonder that there's no time left for sloth.
