Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In 1951, Seymour Nebenzal produced a remake of a 1931 film which he had also produced. The first film, directed by Fritz Lang, is considered a classic; the second, directed by Joseph Losey, not so much so. Which of these thrillers was it?

Answer: M

Lang originally proposed the title 'Murderer Among Us' (which caused the film to be barred from production as it was considered to be a possible anti-Nazi reference) before considering 'A City Searches for a Murderer' and 'Your Killer Looks at You', finally settling on the enigmatic 'M'.

The film about a serial child-killer in Berlin provided Peter Lorre with his first starring role. The 1951 remake moved the setting to Los Angeles, and was (of course) shot in English rather than in German.
2. 1980 saw the release of a remake of 'Little Miss Marker', a tale of a bookie who finds himself saddled with a child, left as a guarantee against a loan when her father loses his bet and commits suicide. The 1934 original marked the film debut of which of these child superstars?

Answer: Shirley Temple

The 1934 version of this film focused on the girl and her relationship with the bookie, Sorrowful Jones, and his (criminally-inclined) circle of friends. The 1980 film didn't even include the name of the girl who played The Kid as one of the stars - they were Walter Matthau as the bookie, Julie Andrews as his love interest, and Tony Curtis, Bob Newhart and Brian Dennehy as his cronies. Sara Stimson, who played The Kid, does not seem to have made any further movies (according to her biography at IMDb).

There was also another version of the story by Damon Runyon: Bob Hope and Lucille Ball starred in 'Sorrowful Jones' in 1949.
3. In 1950, Spencer Tracy was the 'Father of the Bride'; in 1991 it was Steve Martin. The original film was released two days after the first wedding of one of its stars. Whose real-life marriage was exploited in the studio's publicity for the film?

Answer: Elizabeth Taylor

Elizabeth Taylor, who played the bride, married Nicky Hilton on May 6, 1950; it was a short-lived marriage, ending on January 29, 1951. The incorrect options all appeared in the remake, not the original film. Both films were successful comedies about the difficulties a man faced in preparing for his daughter's wedding (although the nature of the problems changed with the times). Both films produced sequels in which a grandchild is added to the family - 'Father's Little Dividend' (1951) and 'Father of the Bride Part II' (1995).
4. Which of these stars of the 1962 version of 'Cape Fear' did NOT also appear (in a different role) in Martin Scorsese's 1991 remake?

Answer: Polly Bergen

Both versions portray Max Cady, recently released after serving a jail sentence which he blames on his lawyer, Sam Bowden, stalking the lawyer and his family to seek revenge. Cape Fear, in North Carolina, is the site of the climactic scene in both movies, where the Bowden family houseboat is moored.

In 1962, Gregory Peck played Sam Bowden, whose character was definitely more noble than that portrayed by Nick Nolte in 1991; Peck had a cameo as Cady's new lawyer in the remake. Robert Mitchum, whose performance as Max Cady is rated by many polls as being among the great screen villains of all time, played a local police officer in the remake which featured Robert de Niro as Cady. Martin Balsam originally played the police chief who was a friend of the Bowden family, and was a judge in the remake. Bowden's wife was played by Polly Bergen in 1962, and Jessica Lange in 1991.
5. In 1963, Jerry Lewis starred in 'The Nutty Professor', a comedy spoof of Robert Louis Stevenson's story 'Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde'. Who starred in the 1996 remake?

Answer: Eddie Murphy

In each movie, a klutzy university professor comes up with a miraculous way to transform himself into a supercool and attractive character. Jerry Lewis was Julius Kelp, a buck-toothed and socially inept professor who developed a potion that changed him into Buddy Love, until the dose wore off. Fortunately, he learned that you need to love yourself before others will love you, and the woman he was using the new persona to impress turned out to like Julius better than Buddy. Eddie Murphy was Sherman Klump, an obese professor who discovered a miracle weight-loss medication - hundreds of pounds disappear instantly, but only as long as the dosage is maintained. Once again, the girl loves the real man, not the persona assumed in order to impress her. Murphy played seven characters in the film, including most of the members of the Klump family.
6. In 1960, Alfred Hitchcock directed a film, starring Anthony Perkins and Janet Leigh, which kept many women out of the shower for a long time. Gus Van Sant's remake in 1998 was much less successful. What was its title?

Answer: Psycho

The shower scene, in which Hitchcock used chocolate syrup (Bosco, to be precise) to simulate the blood (it looked right in black and white) as Norman Bates (Anthony Perkins) stabs Marion Crane (Janet Leigh) to death is one of the most famous scenes in cinematic history, and much has been written about how it was filmed, and what its significance in the movie is.

It certainly provided audiences with a shock, as the apparent heroine was killed off in dramatic fashion surprisingly early. The remake, being filmed in color, did not use Bosco for the blood, but the camera shots for that scene were very close to those of Hitchcock's version.
7. The 2001 heist film 'Ocean's Eleven' was a remake of a the 1960 film of the same name, which starred members of the (in)famous Rat Pack: Frank Sinatra, Peter Lawford, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr, and Joey Bishop, among others. In the remake, who played Danny Ocean, the character originally portrayed by Frank Sinatra?

Answer: George Clooney

Danny Ocean (Sinatra/Clooney) gathered ten friends to pull off a major multi-casino robbery in Las Vegas. The two versions differ in the names of the other characters, and their relationship with each other, as well as the details of the planned crime, and how it goes awry. Both depend on the on-screen chemistry between the robbers, as well as their individual star power.

The earlier version also starred Angie Dickinson as Danny's wife Beatrice, a character renamed Tess Ocean and played by Julia Roberts in the remake, in which Angie Dickinson made a cameo appearance as herself.

Other performers appearing as themselves included Wayne Newton and Siegfried and Roy, well-known Vegas entertainers.
8. Max Bialystock comes up with a foolproof way to make money - sell over 100% in shares in his new production, then make sure it is a flop so the angels won't expect to be given any dividends for their investment. He decides to produce 'Springtime for Hitler', but is devastated when the musical turns out to be a wild success. Mel Brooks has written and produced three versions of this story: a 1968 movie starring Zero Mostel, a 2001 Broadway musical starring Nathan Lane, and a 2005 film also starring Nathan Lane and featuring puppets from Jim Henson. What was the name of all three of these productions?

Answer: The Producers

'The Producers' was Mel Brooks's first movie as a director, and it earned him an Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay. In 1996 it was selected by the US Library of Congress to be preserved in the National Film Registry. His adaptation for the stage won an amazing twelve Tony Awards.

This success led him to remake the movie, with Nathan Lane (Max Bialystock) and Matthew Broderick (Leo Bloom) reprising their stage roles. It also featured Uma Thurman as Ulla Inga Hansen Benson Yansen Tallen Hallen Svaden Swanson, who becomes Mrs Bloom during the course of the film, as their secretary.
9. The 1970 award-winning mystery-suspense play 'Sleuth' was made into a film in 1972, with a script based by Anthony Shaffer on his play. Directed by Joseph L. Mankiewicz, it starred Laurence Olivier and Michael Caine as two men playing a cat-and-mouse game involving robbery and murder. Which of these four was involved in the 2007 remake of 'Sleuth'?

Answer: Michael Caine

The remake featured a script by Harold Pinter, which differed in a number of ways from Shaffer's original. Olivier died in 1989 and Mankiewicz in 1993, so neither was available for the 2007 version. In 1972, Caine played Milo Tindle, the young lover of the wife of Andrew Wyke, a famous detective novelist. For the 2007 version, he played Andrew, with Jude Law in the part of Milo.

This was the second time that Jude Law played a character previously played on film by Caine, the first being the movie 'Alfie' (Caine in 1966, Law in 2004).
10. Some movies are such monster successes that they need to be remade multiple times. In 1933 the female star was Fay Wray; in 1976 it was Jessica Lange; in 2005 it was Naomi Watts who found herself monkeying around. What is this triply-used movie title?

Answer: King Kong

You know the story - a giant ape is discovered on a remote island, and brought back to civilisation to be put on display. He forms a special relationship with a beautiful young woman, and dies tragically. The first and third films reach their climaxes atop the Empire State Building, while the second one uses the World Trade Center as the site for Kong's death plunge.

The 1976 film attempts to take a more upbeat approach to the story, while the 2005 version reverts to being very like the original, while taking advantage of vastly-improved special effects technology.

As well as being remade twice, the original film was re-released several times, each time edited slightly differently, in 1938, 1942, 1946, 1952 and 1956. It was even colorized in the 1980s, to make it more attractive to television audiences.
