Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This 1928 silent film starred Joan Crawford as Diana, a girl who drinks and parties with her friends, but is really a decent girl. Her friend Ann, at the urging of her fortune-hunting mother, takes a liking to wealthy Ben, who is in love with Diana. When Diana seems disinterested, Ben marries Ann, much to his regret.

Answer: Our Dancing Daughters

Johnny Mack Brown, Dorothy Sebastian, Anita Page and Nils Asther also starred in this MGM movie which put Joan Crawford on the map. If you only think of 'Mommie Dearest' and thick eyebrows when you think of Joan Crawford, watch some of her earlier movies and see how lovely she was.
2. In this sequel to one of his most famous films, Rudolph Valentino plays the dual roles of a father and his son. Young Ahmed suspects Yasmin of betraying and deserting him after she disappears, and he won't listen to her explanations of what really happened once he finds her. It's up to his father to talk some sense into the boy.

Answer: Son Of The Sheik

This was Rudolph Valentino's last film, he died the same year this film was released, at the age of 31. Since he died so young, "Son of the Sheik" offers our only glimpse of how Valentino would have looked as an older man, when he is made up to play Ahmed the father. The film, from 1926, also starred Vilma Banky, Agnes Ayres, George Fawcett, Karl Dane and Bull Montana.
3. Sally Field stars as an American woman married to an Iranian who convinces her to visit his relatives in Tehran for a couple of weeks. When the time comes to leave, she is horrified to realize that he has no intention of going back to America, nor letting her leave with their daughter.

Answer: Not Without My Daughter

Based on Betty Mahmoody's real-life experiences, as detailed in her book by the same name, "Not Without My Daughter" starred Alfred Molina, Sheila Rosenthal, Sasson Gabai, Sarah Badel, Roshan Seth and Soudabeh Farrokhnia.
4. Police Commissioner Dreyfus, in Lugash to investigate the kidnapping of Princess Yasmin, comes into contact with a young detective whose bumbling ways remind him of someone he used to know (and detest). It turns out the young man (played by Roberto Benigni) is the illegitimate son of Jacques Clouseau and Maria Gambrelli.

Answer: Son Of The Pink Panther

Being a lover of the "Pink Panther" movies (my friends and I even had a Pink Panther Club (PPC) in the late 1970s), I dragged my future husband to see this when it came out in 1993. I was more than mildly disappointed. Now I stick to the "Pink Panther" movies that have Peter Sellers in them.

The movie also starred Herbert Lom as Dreyfus, Debrah Farentino as Princess Yasmin and Claudia Cardinale as Maria Gambrelli. Ironically, the character of Maria Gambrelli, who met Clouseau in "A Shot in the Dark", was played originally by Elke Sommer. Claudia Cardinale originally played another romantic interest of Clouseau's, Princess Dala, in "The Pink Panther".
5. Sissy Spacek played Loretta Lynn in this 1980 biopic of the singer's life from a young teenager meeting her husband and starting her family, to the stresses and joys of stardom.

Answer: Coal Miner's Daughter

Based on Loretta Lynn's autobiography, the movie also starred Tommy Lee Jones, Levon Helm, Beverly D'Angelo and William Sanderson. Sissy Spacek earned a Best Actress Oscar for her portrayal of Loretta Lynn. She and Beverly D'Angelo did all of their own singing.
6. John Wayne portrays the eldest of four brothers who gather at the family ranch for their mother's funeral. After finding out that their parents had been swindled out of their property, the brothers strive to set matters straight so they can send the youngest brother back to college, as their mother had wanted.

Answer: The Sons Of Katie Elder

Also starring in "The Sons of Katie Elder" were Dean Martin, Earl Holliman, George Kennedy, Dennis Hopper, Martha Hyer and Michael Anderson, Jr. The movie, from 1965, was directed by Henry Hathaway, who also directed the Duke in "True Grit", in 1969.
7. A swimwear designer (Esther Williams) falls for the captain of the South American polo team, the dashing man that her sister meant to fall for, but missed.

Answer: Neptune's Daughter

Ricardo Montalban, Betty Garrett, Red Skelton, Mel Blanc, Xavier Cugat and Keenan Wynn also starred in "Neptune's Daughter", from 1949. Betty Garrett falls for Red Skelton instead, thinking him the captain of the South American polo team. The film won an Oscar for its Original Song "Baby, It's Cold Outside".
8. Fred MacMurray once again plays the absent-minded Prof. Brainard, inventor of a fantastic goo which defies gravity. The government has taken control of this goo and not come through with funding for the Professor, placing he and his wife in financial straits and jeopardizing their marriage. Prof. Brainard experiments with a gaseous form of the goo which could help Medfield College win their big football game.

Answer: Son Of Flubber

9. Katie (Loretta Young), the daughter of a Swedish farmer, leaves home to go to nursing school in the city, but is tricked out of her tuition money. To make ends meet, she becomes a domestic in the home of single Congressman Glenn Morley (Joseph Cotten). Sparks fly between them, both politically and romantically, as Katie pursues political aspirations of her own which threaten his position.

A TV series by the same name aired between 1963 and 1966, and starred Inger Stevens, William Windom and Cathleen Nesbitt. In the TV series, Katie was a governess to the Congressman's two sons.
10. A country girl (Carla Gugino) going to college in L.A. asks a friend (Pauly Shore) to travel home for Thanksgiving with her and pose as her fiance in order to thwart the proposal of a hometown boy.
