Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Her daughter is still alive! Which gory Tarantino blockbuster have I just ruined?

Answer: Kill Bill vol. 1

At the beginning of "Kill Bill vol. 1", we witness a sadistic scene taking place shortly after a massacre at a wedding rehearsal. The one surviving victim is (in the first film) simply referred to as the Bride. In this scene, the Bride is spoken to by a cool-voiced Bill, who then shoots her in the head. To make things even worse, the Bride is pregnant. Somehow, the Bride survives, but awakens from her long coma to find she is no longer with child. Spurred on by revenge, the Bride proceeds to hunt down the assassins who were responsible for killing the guests at the wedding rehearsal and (so she thinks) her daughter.

After much classic Tarantino comical violence, we learn at the end of this film that the Bride is mistaken, as Bill (who is not seen in this film) tells Sophie Fatale that the Bride's daughter is still alive.
2. It is all in his imagination! Which film, centred on a mental asylum, is being referred to here?

Answer: Shutter Island

"Shutter Island" is set on the titular island where the criminally insane are kept. Marshall Teddy Daniels (played by Leonardo DiCaprio) is a visiting police officer sent there to investigate the disappearance of an inmate. As this unsettling film progresses, it becomes clear that there are some things that are not being revealed to the audience and to Marshall Daniels, who suspects a cover up.

As he becomes more frustrated with the lack of cooperation from the prison staff, he tries to leave the island, but is unable to do so.

In the dramatic climax of the film, we learn that Marshall Daniels is a persona adopted by DiCaprio's character, who is in fact an inmate of the island.
3. It's the same necklace! In which Alfred Hitchcock thriller does a piece of jewellery show the leading man that he's been had?

Answer: Vertigo

Jimmy Stewart's Scottie has been trailing Kim Novak's Madeleine at the request of her husband, who is concerned about her mental stability. Apparently Madeleine has become obsessed with her great-grandmother Carlotta who committed suicide, and she spends hours staring at a painting of Carlotta in a museum. Scottie becomes infatuated with Madeleine, and he's distraught after she tragically kills herself.

But then he meets Judy, who bears an uncanny resemblance to the dead woman, so he makes her over to look just like Madeleine.

Then comes the moment: Judy puts on a necklace, the same necklace that Carlotta wore in the painting, and Scottie realizes that she is Madeleine (or rather, he finds out that she was hired to impersonate Madeleine).
4. She's a He! For which 1992 Neil Jordan film were audiences asked not to reveal the secret to their friends?

Answer: The Crying Game

Stephen Rea's Fergus is an IRA member tasked with guarding Forest Whitaker's Jody, a British soldier who an IRA unit has kidnapped. Fergus and Jody strike up somewhat of a friendship, and Jody asks Fergus to look after his girlfriend, Jaye Davidson's Dil, as Jody doesn't expect to survive his captivity. Fergus does meet Dil and falls in love with her, but when the moment comes, he finds out the equipment isn't quite what he expected.
5. Yuri exists! In which 1987 thriller does it turn out there really is a Russian spy in the Pentagon?

Answer: No Way Out

Kevin Costner's Tom is having an affair with Sean Young's Susan, who is also involved in a relationship with Gene Hackman's Secretary of Defense David Brice. When Brice accidentally kills Susan his aide, Will Patton's Scott Pritchard, convinces him to blame the death on an alleged KGB agent named Yuri who was having an affair with her.

Then Pritchard can investigate the death to uncover and remove any incriminating evidence against Brice. But the noose begins to tighten on Tom, since evidence uncovered points to him, so he needs to prove that Brice was involved with Susan, and he does so based on a gift that Brice had given to Susan.

When confronted, Brice blames Pritchard for Susan's death, which drives Pritchard to suicide, leaving Brice to claim that Pritchard was Yuri.

But at the very end, we find out there really is a Yuri, and it's actually Tom!
6. The massacre survivor is the mysterious mobster! In which 1995 suspense film do we learn that "the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist"?

Answer: The Usual Suspects

Kevin Spacey's Verbal Kint, a disabled con man, is one of two survivors of an attack on a ship at a port. The other man is badly burned but is able to tell investigators that the man responsible for the attack was Keyser Soze, a mysterious Turkish mobster. Meanwhile, Verbal Kint is being interviewed by the police and tells the elaborate story of how the attack came about.

After Kint leaves the police station, Chazz Palminteri's Agent Kujan realizes that the names Kint used in his story were taken from various objects in the room, just as the fax arrives showing the sketch of Keyser Soze (looking just like Verbal Kint) that had been drawn based on the burned witness's recollection. Cut to Kint, walking away from the police station as his limp disappears. Saw that coming, didn't you?
7. It's their dad! Though this may not be a spoiler to the viewer, it was certainly a surprise to the family. Which film is being referred to here?

Answer: Mrs. Doubtfire

Mrs. Doubtfire is a slightly off-the-wall, family film starring the slightly off-the-wall comedian/actor Robin Williams, who plays both Daniel Hillard and the wacky Mrs. Doubtfire. Daniel decides to take his skills of impersonation to the next level by taking on the persona of an elderly woman, with the help of his make-up artist brother.

The reason for this disguise is to take on the position of nanny to his own children, whom he has restricted access to after a messy divorce. Mrs. Doubtfire gives us numerous brilliant but underrated quotes.

When discussing her (fake) late husband, Mrs. Doubtfire says "it was the drink that killed him". When met with "Oh, how terrible - he was an alcoholic?", Mrs. Doubtfire responds with, "No, he was hit by a Guinness truck".
8. Tyler Durden doesn't exist! Which movie am I doing my utmost to spoil here?

Answer: Fight Club

"Fight Club" is a classic and brutal insight into the mind of an insomniac who lives a miserable life and who finds solace in attending care groups for diseases he does not have. The main character (played by Edward Norton) is the insomniac, but his life becomes more interesting with the arrival of Tyler Durden (played by Brad Pitt) whose zest and insanity breaks the humdrum existence which pre-existed. Together, the two men establish what comes to be known as the "Fight Club", which offers similarly unhappy men the chance to get together and beat the heck out of one another.

As the club grows, it evolves into a crime organisation. By the end of the film, we discover the shock twist that Tyler Durden is not a separate person at all, but is an aspect of the main character's personality.
9. He really was killed by a jet engine falling on his house! Which 2001 science fiction cult classic ends with this scene?

Answer: Donnie Darko

Jake Gyllenhaal's Donnie Darko has been told by Frank, who wears an evil rabbit costume, that the world will end in 28 days. That day, a jet engine falls onto his house, crashing into his bedroom. Frank continues to visit Donnie, getting him in trouble by influencing him to do things like burn down a house.

As Frank's prophesized end of the world approaches, Donnie takes his girlfriend and some friends to the house where a former science teacher who has given him a book on time travel lives. A car hits Donnie's girlfriend, killing her, and the driver is his sister's boyfriend, Frank, who is wearing the evil rabbit costume. Donnie kills him and drives up into the hills where he sees the jet engine fall from the plane.

As the events of the film fly back in reverse, we find Donnie back in the bed as the jet engine crashes through into his bedroom, killing him.
10. The ship sinks! Which 1997 epic did I just spoil?

Answer: Titanic

Come on, don't look at me like that. Who was this really a surprise for? This James Cameron film tells the story of Jack (Leonardo DiCaprio) and Rose (Kate Winslet) and their brief love affair on the most famous ship in history - the Titanic.

For years, this film held the record for Box Office takings, but was displaced in 2009 by "Avatar" (also directed by James Cameron).
