At the beginning of the film, when the troopers are ambushed by the bugs from all sides, they discover the outpost. Most of the troopers withdraw from the attack with Sergeant Rake, while some others stay with General Shepherd.

This happens before the movie and is set offscreen. Sometime before the troopers find the outpost where Captain V.J. Dax is held, Dax murdered Colonel Hohlback (his C.O.) simply because "he gave a lot of stupid orders".

In the first film, Johnny Rico's former school teacher became a lieutenant in the war against the bugs. He used this phrase when on Planet P, fighting back the bugs at Whiskey Outpost to increase the morale of the troops. In the opening scene in this movie, a Mobile Infantry officer uses it with a wink. Making it sound like it is an honour to join the Mobile Infantry.

As the troopers who are infected are bugs and no longer humans, they don't eat normal foods like the other troopers do. In the movie you can see Corporal Griff having some sugar cubes (giving himself away as one of the infected ones to the audience) with Sergeant Rake, while searching for food and also at lunch when Private Tor has some while Private Brick is teasing him.

The name of the planet the troopers are stationed on is never revealed in the movie. We only learn the name of the outpost they discover and take shelter in.

In the first film the Mobile Infantry used Morita rifles which fired normal ammunition. In this film (because it is set many years later) the Mobile Infantry technology has increased allowing, for laser guns to be the replacement of the Morita rifles.

You hear three troopers mention this throughout the movie. The first and second are in the opening fighting scene, where Corporal Kobe is sending a transmission for pick-up with General Shepherd. The third time is at the outpost where Private Otter is in contact with the Fleet.

The new bug infects humans by entering their mouths and controlling their brains. Sergeant Rake is infected by Private Horton after all the other troopers are infected in the outpost (with the exception of Private Sahara and Captain Dax). Horton does this by producing a bug from his mouth which enters Rake's mouth while she is being held down.

While on watch, Private Sarhara questions Dax on why he wears all the dog tags. He hesitates to answer her, making her take "a lucky guess".

After being infected by the new bug but maintaining enough self-control to contain the bug inside her, Sergeant Rake makes her way to Dax and frees him before he is infected. As soon as she does that she commits suicide as she knows she cannot be cured. Private Sarhara is the one who informs him of the new bug and helps him out of the incinerator but Rake is the one who actually frees him.
