Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. This is the style in which '13 Rue Madeleine' was filmed. This style created a more factual feeling to an otherwise fictional story.

Answer: Documentary

The voice over in the introduction of the film gives a real life, documentary tone to the film. The choice of black and white film also adds to its 'real feel'. Throughout the film, the narrator intersperses information that moves the plot along and keeps us focused on the 'real life' effects the director desired.
2. What is so important about the address, 13 Rue Madeleine?

Answer: It is the address of Gestapo Headquarters in Le Harvre.

Le Havre was a key city in France and important to the occupying German forces during WWII. Its strategic location made it an ideal locale for the Gestapo Headquarters.
3. This actor known for his physicality, among other talents, plays the lead, Richard Sharkey. Name him.

Answer: James Cagney

James Cagney (1899-1986) is ideal as the tough and flamboyant Richard Emmet Sharkey. In one scene we see him teaching the recruits how to 'slap the mat' as they practice tumbling. Cagney was well versed in such athletic prowess. At one time he was the highest ranking Caucasian Judo Master in the world.
4. Sharkey's boss tells him a terrible secret about the new recruits. What is the secret?

Answer: One of them is a Nazi agent.

The secret about the double agent within the group of trainees is pivotal to the story line in this film. First the audience is drawn into the plot and secondly once identified we are concerned about how this double agent will react when he realizes he has been found out.
5. Jeff Lassiter and Bill O'Connell bond over a game which they play while training at the English estate. What game do they play?

Answer: Backgammon

The roommates become good friends and this proves to be again an important dramatic device. Since one of them is the Nazi, we know that eventually the friendship will end and probably badly. The fact that Bill wins thousands of games from Jeff again shows his all or nothing personality. Also backgammon is a game most often played by higher brow individuals.

After all, they are considered the crème de la crème when recruited.
6. How does Jeff Lassiter die?

Answer: His parachute cord is cut and he falls to his death.

Jeff is bright but somewhat naïve. When he is told about Bill's true identity,
he just can't hide his disgust. Bill notices this change in Jeff and decides to cut his cord as he jumps and Jeff falls to his death.
7. Suzanne seeks important personal information, while training. What is she desperate to find out?

Answer: She wants news on her husband, who is missing.

From the beginning of the film, Suzanne is anxious to get word on the whereabouts of her husband. She stops to ask twice in the midst of training to get word. Eventually, the night before the mission is to begin, word comes that her husband is dead. She is, of course, upset, and almost divulges to O'Connell, the Nazi agent, the real location of their landing.

She doesn't but from then on she is determined more than ever to do her best.
8. Who replaces Jeff on the assignment in France?

Answer: Richard Sharkey

When word comes of Jeff's death, Gibson and Sharkey are immediately aware that O'Connell (Kuncel) knows the truth of the mission. Sharkey insists on replacing Jeff. After all, he knows the mission and has a record of amazing success behind enemy lines. Gibson reluctantly agrees to allow him to go.
9. What message does Sharkey send to prove he is an American agent to the French Underground villagers, who have taken him prisoner?

Answer: "A lamb is ready for the slaughter."

The writers use a tongue in cheek message for Sharkey to send to British Intelligence in order to prove his real identify. The suggestion comes from the Mayor, who is also the head of the Underground in that city. The message 'A lamb is ready for the slaughter' applies to their plan to kill Sharkey if the message is not relayed back to them during that night's radio broadcast from London.

At the last minute, the message comes through and Sharkey lives.
10. What career does Sharkey follow after the war?

Answer: None, he is killed in a bombing at the end of the film.

Sharkey dies a hero as does Suzanne. They both complete the assignment and the objective to capture Duclois, the V2 creator, and have him interrogated. However Suzanne is shot when her radio station is found out and Sharkey, who had previously escaped behind enemy lines twice, trained numerous agents and replaced Jeff Lassiter feeling responsible for the young man's death, is killed in the bombing of the Underground stronghold.
