Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. During the film "Gladiator", released in 2000, one of the chariots comes to grief during the "Battle of Carthage" scene at the arena. What incongruous object is revealed hidden under the chariot, as it tips over?

Answer: A gas cylinder

As the chariot flips over in a great cloud of dust, the gas cylinder attached to the underside of the floorboard can clearly be seen.
"Gladiator" (2000) starred Russell Crowe as Maximus Decimus Meridius, and was directed by Ridley Scott, who once studied at the College of Art in my home town of Hartlepool, England.
2. In "The Rocky Horror Picture Show", during the scenes of Eddie's escape from the freezer, as he sings the "Hot Patootie" song, one detail of his hand changes from shot to shot. Do you remember what it is?

Answer: His pinky ring disappears and reappears.

Eddie was memorably played by Meatloaf in the 1975 film version of "The Rocky Horror Picture Show".
During the "Hot Patootie" scenes, Eddie wears several rings on his left hand. The pinky ring, which has a cross on it, vanishes and reappears from shot to shot. This is quite noticeable as he plays the saxophone.
3. In the 2001 version of "Ocean's Eleven", there is a scene where the characters of Rusty and Linus are in the botanical gardens talking. Rusty has an object in his hand that turns into something else, and then back again, from shot to shot during this scene. What are these two transforming objects?

Answer: Glass and plate

At the beginning of the scene, Rusty (Brad Pitt) is holding a stemmed glass which is supposed to contain shrimp. In the next shot it has turned into a plate of fruit (well it certainly looks more like fruit than it does anything else, and it is most definitely NOT seafood of any kind), and then it miraculously goes back to being a glass of shrimp by the end of the scene. Oddly, the napkin over his arm stays the same throughout. "Ocean's Eleven" was originally made in 1960, and was a 'Rat Pack' film, before being remade by Steven Soderbergh with Brad Pitt, George Clooney, and an all star cast in 2001.
4. In which 1985 Arnold Schwarzenegger film does a yellow Porsche car have extensive damage down one side, which is then miraculously perfect and unblemished as it drives away?

Answer: Commando

"Commando" stars Arnold as an ex-special forces Colonel who has to rescue his daughter from kidnappers. He hijacks the yellow porsche, and its driver, (played by Rae Dawn Chong). One side of the car gets all dented and smashed in. In the next scene, as Arnold's character, Colonel Matrix, drives it away, we see the same side quite clearly and it is in pristine condition, without a scratch on it.
5. In "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl", in the scene where Captain Jack Sparrow says "On deck, you scabrous dogs" to the crew, there is a person in the background who quite clearly should not be in the shot. What is this person wearing that gives them away?

Answer: Cowboy hat and sunglasses

The man in the white T-shirt, sunglasses and cowboy hat is clearly a crew member, and has ended up being visible in the lefthand side of the background in this particular shot of the film.
"Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" was released in 2003, and was directed by Gregor Verbinski.
6. I couldn't write a movies quiz without including at least one "Harry Potter" question, so here it is! In "Harry Potter and the Philosopher's (Sorceror's) Stone", what is the rather major error that happens during the scene of the start of term feast and Sorting Ceremony?

Answer: Harry moves from sitting beside Ron to being beside Hermione, on the other side of the table, in the next shot.

After Harry is sorted into Gryffindor, he goes across to the long table and sits down beside Ron. When the feast magically appears on the plates, almost immediately afterwards, Harry is at the other side of the table, beside Hermione.
"Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone" was released in the UK in 2001, and retitled "...and the Sorceror's Stone" for the US and Indian releases. It is of course based on the book by J.K. Rowling.
7. Picture the scene; a brave warrior leads his army in a charge across the field of battle to engage the waiting enemy forces. In his hand is a large sword, no wait, it's an axe. No, he is empty handed; oops silly me, it IS a large sword... The same film also features one poor soldier being shot with an arrow in the same foot twice, and enemies from different sides chatting in the background when they think the camera is pointing elsewhere. Which film is this?

Answer: Braveheart

Another thing to watch out for in "Braveheart" is during the scene at the funeral of William Wallace's wife Murron. As William stands up from leaning over to kiss her goodbye, if you look behind him to his left, you might just catch a blurred glimpse of a small white van driving down the road behind the trees in the background. It is quite difficult to spot, but it is there.
"Braveheart" was released in 1995, and starred Mel Gibson as William Wallace.
8. During the scene in "Twilight", where Edward reveals his true nature to Bella, something about his appearance changes from shot to shot. What is it?

Answer: The epaulette button on the shoulder of his coat is fastened and unfastened.

The "Twilight Saga" films are based on the series of books written by Stephanie Meyer. The film version of the eponymous first one was released in 2008.
During the scene in question, Bella and Edward are in the forest, and the button down epaulette on his right shoulder fastens and unfastens itself several times as he tells Bella he is a vampire.
9. In this next film, released in 1997, a girl called Rose uses an axe to free her lover Jack from a set of handcuffs chaining him to a large pipe. When viewed in slow motion it is obvious that the axe actually hits his wrist, missing the cuffs completely. Which Oscar winning film is this?

Answer: Titanic

"Titanic" starred Kate Winslett as Rose and Leonardo di Caprio as Jack. Directed by by James Cameron, it was nominated for fourteen Oscars and won eleven of them.
During the scene where Rose frees Jack, the axe she wields hits his wrist, and the chain of the handcuffs breaks apart of its own volition.
10. It is often said that "location is everything", but for the makers of the film "Troy" (2004) something in the background of one particular scene well and truly gives away the fact that rather than being in Greece, or indeed Europe, they were filming somewhere else entirely. As the Trojans flee into Troy when the Greeks arrive, what out of place thing(s) is/are clearly visible in the background?

Answer: A herd of llamas

Llamas are indigenous to South America, and have never been found wild in Greece.
"Troy" was released in 2004 starred Brad Pitt as Achilles, and Eric Bana as Hector. It is based on the ancient poem "The Iliad" by Homer.
