Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "There were 10 in the bed and the little one said 'roll over' So they all rolled over and one fell out..." Many of us learned this song in childhood. According to the 'Sesame Street' version, what did the little one say after nine had fallen out of bed?

Answer: Good night

No doubt there are other variations of this. When I was growing up we sang:
"There was one in the bed and the little one said 'roll over'
So they all rolled over and one fell IN"
"There were two in the bed..." and so on up to 10 again, when, guess what....?
Well, we didn't have many other ways of making fun when I was growing up in rural Tyrone.
2. "Sleep like a baby, My little lady. Dream 'till the sunrise, creeps into your eyes, Dream 'till the sunrise turns on the day..." This was a hit for the English singer Tony Christie. What was the name of the song?

Answer: Avenues And Alleyways

"In the avenues and alleyways,
While you sleep there's a whole world coming alive.
Abel and his brother, fighting one another,
In and out of every dive."

In 1971, the song reached number 37 in the UK charts after it was the theme music for a TV show called "The Protectors". Re-released in 2005, it reached number 25.
"Is This the Way to Amarillo?" reached number 18 in 1972. It was re-released with a video featuring the comedian Peter Kaye and a host of well known British TV stars in 2005 and reached Number One.
In 1970 Christie took "I Did What I Did For Maria" to number Two in the UK charts.
3. "...And so you and I We watched our years go by We watched our sweet dreams fly Far away, But maybe someday I don't know when But we will dream again And we'll be happy then Till our time Just drifts away..." Which taxi-license holding songwriter sang this song?

Answer: Harry Chapin

The song was about a couple who had so many dreams but kept putting off trying to fulfill them while they got on with the mundane chores of life. Chapin concluded:
"But I guess our dreams have come and gone
You gotta dream when you are young..."
Just before he began to make it big as a singer, Chapin obtained a licence to drive a taxi. And, of course, one of his best-known songs was called "Taxi".
4. "Sweet dreams are made of this Who am I to disagree? I travel the world And the seven seas Everybody's looking for something..." Which British duo had a hit with this song?

Answer: Eurythmics

"Some of them want to use you
Some of them want to get used by you
Some of them want to abuse you
Some of them want to be abused."
Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart made this a number Two UK hit in 1983 and it topped the US Billboard Hot 100 the same year.
The duo had just one UK Number One between 1980 and 2005, "There Must Be an Angel (Playing with My Heart)", which was released in 1985.
5. "When I was a little bitty boy just up off the floor We used to go out to Grandma's house every month end or so Have chicken pie and country ham, homemade butter on the bread But the best darn thing about Grandma's house was a great big feather bed.." Which singer, who thanked God he was a country boy, sang about fun times at his grandmother's house?

Answer: John Denver

"It was nine feet high and six feet wide, soft as a downy chick
It was made from the feathers of forty 'leven geese, took a whole bolt of cloth for the tick
It'd hold eight kids 'n' four hound dogs and a piggy we stole from the shed
Didn't get much sleep but we had a lot of fun on Grandma's feather bed."

I don't know why but a lot of people get a bit sniffy about John Denver. He recorded more than 300 songs and had 10 US Number ones (in all charts).
Among those chart toppers were "Sunshine on My Shoulders" (1973), "Thank God I'm a Country Boy" (1974),"Back Home Again" (1974) and "Annie's Song" (1973).
6. "It was just some boards of rough cut pine, And a quilt of patch work cotton A place to lay your body down, a place to rest your head. A field of fluffy mountains for a little girl to hide in. Clouds and chasing rainbows was that big four poster bed..." Which singer who wanted to be wanted sang this song?

Answer: Brenda Lee

"Daddy built it out of pine two days before the wedding.
They say the neighbours cheered and hollered till his face got red.
And Mama brought the feather pillows and some handmade bedding.
And they spent their wedding night in that big four poster bed."
This was one of the many fine songs penned by Shel Silverstein.
Lee had numerous US top 10 hits including numbers ones with "I'm Sorry" (1958) "I Want to Be Wanted" (1960); and "All Alone Am I" (1961).
7. "Ev'ry night, I hope and pray A dream lover will come my way A girl to hold in my arms And know the magic of her charms..." Who sang about wanting a dream lover so that he didn't have to dream alone?

Answer: Bobby Darin

"Because I want a girl
To call my own
I want a dream lover
So I don't have to dream alone
"Dream Lover' was a US number 2 hit in 1959, though it topped the charts in the UK. In the same year he took "Mack the Knife" to the top of the charts in both the UK and the USA.
8. "The bed's too big without you A cold wind blows right through that open door I can't sleep with your memory Dreamin' dreams of what used to be.." Which British pop group made this rather arresting discovery?

Answer: The Police

"When she left I was cold inside
That look on my face was just pride
No regrets, no love, no tears
Living on my own was the least of my fears"
The Police had numerous UK top 10s between 1977 and 1986, including the Number Ones "Message In A Bottle" (1979),"Walking On The Moon" (1979), "Every Little Thing She Does Is Magic" (1981) and "Every Breath You Take", which also topped the US charts in 1983.
9. "Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight? If your mother says don't chew it, do you swallow it in spite? Can you catch it on your tonsils, can you heave it left and right? Does your chewing gum lose its flavour on the bedpost overnight?" Which British skiffle singer had a hit in both the UK and the USA with this novelty song?

Answer: Lonnie Donegan

The song reached Number Three in the UK and Number Five in the USA in 1961. It was a cover of "Does The Spearmint Lose its Flavor On The Bedpost Overnight?", a song released in the USA in 1924 by Ernie Hare & Billy Jones (aka The Happiness Boys).
Donegan was in the forefront of the skiffle and early pop movement in the UK in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Many of his songs (and those of his British contemporaries) were covers of cross-Atlantic hits.
According to the book "British Hit Singles & Albums", Donegan had 24 successive Top 30 hits and was the first UK male singer to have two US Top 10 hits.
UK Number Ones included "Cumberland Gap" (1957) an "My Old Man's A Dustman" (1960).
10. At number 10 in our quiz "Ten In A Bed" we have this charming 'Sesame Street' song: "A number 10 from - Kissed a blueberry-beaked budgie And after that he lay in bed While ten blueberries grew on his head" Which State of the Union fits into the blank? (Think about the rhyme).

Answer: Tennessee

"The doctor said "I have a cure
Stay in bed for ten days more."
(More counting)
"When that old ten felt well again
He jumped and counted one to ten "
(Even more counting)
Even though I was never particularly into "Sesame Street", its educational influence on generations of youngsters was huge.
