The banishment was not for very long. Historically, Richard was born 9/8/1157 to King Henry II and Eleanor of Aquitane in Beaumont Palace in Oxford, England. He died 4/6/1199 in Chalus in the Aquitane. He was actually released from prison in 1194. During his 10 year reign, he spent a total of about 10 months in England trying to raise money for his foreign wars. John was banished for 5 years. If you want to understand the conflicts of the succession to the throne at this period, see "The Lion In Winter" (1968), an excellent film with Peter O'Toole and Katherine Hepburn.

The Monarchs of England have "fidei defensor" ("Defender of the Faith") as part of their official titles. Pope Leo X bestowed the title upon Henry VIII in 1521, for attacking Lutheran ideas.

It wasn't until the 1534 when the "Act of Supremacy" was passed that Henry VIII became the head of the Church of England.
