Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. A vacationing couple scuba dives the reefs and shipwrecks in a tropical paradise. In what locale is the film set?

Answer: Bermuda

The open water scenes were filmed, not in Bermuda, but in the British Virgin Islands. The land sequences were shot in Bermuda. They also developed one of the largest underwater movie sets ever, for 'The Deep'. The St. David's lighthouse, the Royal Navy Dockyard, and the Bermuda National Library were all used in the film.
2. A woman was sensually filmed in a white and wet t-shirt. It was one of the most memorable portions of this film. What actress played Gayle Berke, in that t-shirt?

Answer: Jacqueline Bisset

I'm certain any of these actresses would have been breathtaking in those scenes. Peter Gruber, the producer of the film, believes the film's success was due, in large part, to those wet t-shirt scenes. Jacqueline Bisset starred in many fine films, including 'Bullitt', 'The Greek Tycoon', and 'Class'. 'The Deep', however, made her a star.
3. The male role from the scuba diving couple was played by whom?

Answer: Nick Nolte

Nolte played the role of David Sanders. Much like Ms. Bisset, Nolte's star power grew after the release of 'The Deep'. However, movies like '48 hours' and 'The Prince of Tides' made him a mega-star. Nominated for Academy Awards ('The Prince of Tides', 'Affliction', and 'Warrior'),
4. On the duo's initial dive they find two items of significance. One was a gold medallion, and the other was an ampoule (a small glass vial). What was in the ampoule?

Answer: morphine

While diving around a shipwreck the couple find two shiny objects. The medallion has an image of a woman, an inscription of "SCOPN", and the date of 1714. The vial contains morphine. The sunken vessel is that of a World War 2 naval ship. The ship was carrying munitions and medicine. It sank, in a hurricane, off the coast of Bermuda.
5. The couple take the items to a local diver and treasure hunter, and hope to garner information about their find. What was the treasure hunter's name?

Answer: Romer Treece

As with all his roles, Robert Shaw gives an excellent performance as Romer Treece. His character proves to be a wealth of knowledge, and a most needed ally to the young treasure seekers. The character of Romer Treece was modeled after real life treasure hunter Teddy Tucker. Mr. Tucker helped as a consultant on the film. Shaw is best remembered as Captain Quint in 'Jaws'.

He also starred in 'The Sting', 'A Man for all Seasons', and 'From Russia, With Love'. Sadly, Shaw died of a heart attack in 1978, at the age of 51.
6. What is the name of the vessel/shipwreck the duo dives on in search of treasure?

Answer: Goliath

"This is Goliath trash. What were you doing diving down there"? Mr. Treece exclaims this when the couple bring him their trinkets to examine. The couple saw the wreck topside, and dove on it (not knowing it was off limits). The Goliath is off limits to divers, as it has unexploded munitions in its sunken hull.
7. During the duo's visit to Robert Shaw's character he offers them a glass of rum. They decline saying it is too early to drink rum. What was Shaw's response?

Answer: "Rum's not drinkin, it's survivin."

Rum is a liquor distilled from fermented sugarcane. The Caribbean is world renowned for its rum. This fine elixir was known to be downfall of many seamen. Shaw and Nolte were known to tip a bottle or two in their time, and did so off set during the film's production.
8. The ampoules were a much coveted commodity with some of the locals. What was the name of the villainous leader of local islanders who wanted the ampoules for themselves?

Answer: Henri Cloche

The morphine contained in the ampoules was very valuable to a drug kingpin like Henri Cloche (played by Louis Gossett Jr.) He first tries to sway the couple's thoughts with words, "I am a collector of rare and unusual glass. The bottle you found could be Reinhardt glass, from Rotterdam." Unsuccessful with his initial ploys, he then turns to Black Magic terror, in hopes of securing their find. Louis Gossett Jr. gives his normal, excellent, portrayal.

He is known best for his Oscar winning performance as Sgt. Foley in "An Officer and a Gentleman".
9. What other terror awaits the treasure hunters in the depths of the shipwreck?

Answer: Moray Eel

In the very beginning of the film Gayle sees a shiny object, and tries to grab it. She is almost pulled under the wreck and drowned by some unknown entity. Later, a harrowing encounter is had when the group comes across a giant Moray Eel (nearly 10-12 feet long) that lives inside the hull of the wreck.

In a final battle with Cloche and his henchmen, Romer Treece maneuvers Cloche near the den of the eel. As Cloche is about to stab Romer, the Moray Eel grabs the drug lord by the head, and drags him to its lair.
10. In the final scene of the film what protrudes from the surface of the sea?

Answer: a hand holding a golden dragon

The hand is that of Romer Treece. He had rigged the Goliath (the shipwreck) to explode. He has hopes of destroying the remaining vials of morphine, and killing the drug smugglers. Those things are accomplished. However, the explosion also uncovers the shipwreck of the Santa Clara, a Spanish sailing ship that went down in the 1700s carrying a massive treasure.

It was covered by the wreck of the Goliath. The golden dragon is a signature piece of treasure. It helps identify the shipwreck, as its manifest speaks of a golden dragon medallion with emerald eyes. "What are the chances that two ships, traveling the same route, centuries apart, went down in hurricanes, on the same exact reef"?
