Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Prince of Egypt", you might have thought that the evil pharoah Rameses would have been Egyptian. However, because of his wicked ways, he of course had to be voiced by an English actor. Who?

Answer: Ralph Fiennes

Ralph (pronounced Rafe) Fiennes is known for his sensitive acting in a number of high quality and intellectual films. And for the "Avengers" remake.
2. Which English actor played a malevolent South African "diplomat" in "Lethal Weapon 2"?

Answer: Joss Ackland

At the end of the film, Joss's diplomatic immunity is "revoked" when Danny Glover shoots him several times. Serves him right for pretending not to be English.
3. In "Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade" Indy and his father are pitted against the evil Walter Donovan. Who played him?

Answer: Julian Glover

Note that Indy's father is played by the Scottish Sean Connery - only the English are allowed to play villains.
4. "Shallow Grave" - a film about 3 flatmates - 2 Scots and 1 New Zealander. One of the Scots goes bonkers and ends up dying, and there are no points for guessing the real nationality of the actor who played him. But can you name that actor?

Answer: Christopher Eccleston

Ecclestone also played the villain in "Elizabeth", ending up with his head on a spike. The 2 "heroes" of that film, Queen Elizabeth (of England) and her trusted (English) adviser Walsingham, are of course played by Australians (admittedly very well).
5. Perhaps the most famous villain of recent years is Darth Vader from "Star Wars". Unusually, he was voiced by an American, but an English actor wore the suit. Who was he?

Answer: Dave Prowse

Dave Prowse was also "The Green Cross Man", who helped British children learn to cross the road.
6. True or False - the title characters in "Hannibal", "Bram Stoker's Dracula" and "Frankenstein" (1994) were all played by Englishmen?

Answer: False

Dracula (Gary Oldman) was English but Frankenstein (Kenneth Branagh) was Irish, but Anthony Hopkins (who played Hannibal) is Welsh. It's quite rare for Welsh actors to play Hollywood villains - I presume they aren't thought to be as scary as the English (although Catherine Zeta Jones scares the bejaysus out of me).
7. Can you name Jeremy Irons's evil lion character in "The Lion King"?

Answer: Scar

Disney villains always sound English, even when they're not.
8. The character "Cunningham" in "Rob Roy" was a classic English villain - foppish, effete and pointlessly evil. Who played him?

Answer: Tim Roth

Quentin Tarantino experimented with having the English actor Tim Roth play relatively decent characters in "Reservoir Dogs" and "Pulp Fiction". This is probably why you never hear from Quentin these days.
9. In "Spartacus", Lawrence Olivier's character brutally crucifies hundreds of men, because they won't surrender Kirk Douglas. What is the character's name?

Answer: Crassus

Crassus was a member of the First Triumvirate, an alliance with Julius Caesar and Pompey. It ended badly, which you might have thought would have acted as a warning to Lepidus, Mark Anthony and Augustus, when they formed the Second Triumvirate. But that's the ancients for you.
10. True or False: 85% of official "James Bond" villains have been played by Englishmen?

Answer: False

It's actually much lower, around five or six depending on who you count as the official villain. This isn't a particularly interesting statistic, but it took me ages to work it out, so I'm putting the question in anyway. Typical English, eh?
