Basil Rathbone also stars as Mr. Black. Name the film. Hint

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. 1940. This was Vincent's very first horror film with him in the lead role. It was a sequel to the 1933 original that starred Claude Rains. Name the film.

Answer: The Invisible Man Returns

"The Invisible Man Returns", released in 1940, was Vincent's first starring role in a horror and was a foreshadow of things to come. For those of you who guessed "Tower of London", Vincent was killed about half an hour through the movie so, although to be technical it was his first crack at horror, it was not his first starring role in one.
2. 1946. This was Vincent's first solo starring role in a film and he did wonderfully. He plays a psychiatrist who kills his wife and who has to take care of the one person who saw him do it. Name the film.

Answer: Shock

Vincent plays Dr. Dick Cross, a man who murdered his wife because she threatened to tell the newspapers about the affair he was having with one of his nurses, played by Lynn Bari. The murder takes place in a hotel, and a woman in the room adjoining Dr. Cross' room saw it all--and then goes into a state of shock. Once she comes out of it, she tells what she saw-and Dr. Cross tries to drive her insane. Absolutely incredible suspense movie.
3. This film was released in 1946. This film was based on a novel written by Anya Seton and Vincent is again in the lead role. He plays Nicholas Van Ryn, a patron who lives on the Hudson in 1840's New York. Gene Tierney plays his naive, innocent cousin, who falls under the spell of Nicholas - and the house he lives in. Name the film.

Answer: Dragonwyck

This has to be one of my favorite Vincent Price films. His portrayal of the sinister, cynical Van Ryn should have garnered him at least an Academy Award nomination - if not the award itself. (Ok I know - I am a LITTLE biased!) Gene Tierney does a spectacular job as Miranda, an innocent 18 year old girl who comes to Dragonwyck to be a companion to Nicholas' eight year old daughter, Katrine. Well, Nicholas soon falls in love with her and she with him.

The only trouble is - Nicholas is already married.

It's a Vincent Price movie... let your imagination figure out the rest. Just an incredible movie - and novel.
4. 1950. This one starred Ronald Colman and Celeste Holm. Vincent played Burnbridge Waters, the president of a soap company. Ronald played Beauregard Bottomly (by these names we know it's funny) a man who knows everything. What's the name of this zany movie?

Answer: Champagne for Caesar

Vincent named this film as his absolute favorite. I must agree. It took me a while to track this one down, but I'm glad I did! It is absolutely hilarious. Story has it that the reason that Vincent didn't have any lines opposite Coleman at first was because he was so starstruck that he made a deal with the director not to have any lines for the first few minutes.

But once he got going, Vincent stole the show.
5. 1953. This was the film that cemented Vincent in horror films forever. He plays sculptor Henry Jarrod, a man who is betrayed by his business partner. Jarrod's place is set on fire. He is alive but now insane.

Answer: House of Wax

Boy, he sure had a lot of movies with the word "house" in them didn't he? Anyway, this is one of the first films that was shot in 3-D, a new concept back then. Interesting that the director, Andre de Toth, only had one eye, so he never got the full concept of the 3-D.
6. 1956. With his cast of thousands, Cecil B. DeMille remade one of his silent movies of the '20s. Vincent has a small role as Baka the master builder. Charlton Heston has the lead role, along with Yul Brynner. Name the film.

Answer: The Ten Commandments

An incredible film shot partly on location in Egypt, it literally had a cast of thousands, as DeMille's movies usually did. Almost four hours long, "The Ten Commandments" is always shown around Easter time. If you haven't seen it yet, catch it when it comes on next Easter.
7. 1958. It features Vincent as Francois Delambre, the brother of a man who is the victim of a science experiment gone wrong. Name the film.

Answer: The Fly

Ah, "The Fly". Indeed a classic. I saw the remake and I like this version better. I always wondered why people think that Vincent is the one who played Andre. If you've seen the film, you know he plays Francois. Strange.
8. This film was released in 1958. This one has him playing Frederick Loren, a man who invites five people to come and stay overnight at a haunted house. If they survive they get 10,000 dollars. Name the film.

Answer: House on Haunted Hill

This is one of my favorites as well. It has a lot of sentimental value to me. It was one of the first Vincent Price movies I ever saw, back in 1998. Again I saw the remake, and even though Geoffrey Rush did an outstanding job trying to be like Vincent, he just... isn't.
9. 1960. This film marks the first of seven films that Vincent made with director Roger Corman. All of the stories were taken from the works of Edgar Allan Poe. Vincent plays Roderick, a man who will not let his sister marry due to the fact that the family line is "tainted". Name the film.

Answer: The Fall of the House of Usher

Vincent did an excellent job in portraying Roderick Usher. He was a man who was obsessed with the idea that the Usher line was tainted and that Madeline couldn't marry Phillip. You can certainly tell the underlying feeling of incest, but it's Poe - should you really be surprised?
10. 1961. This is the second installment of the Price/Poe/Corman films. Vincent plays Nicholas Medina, a man who just recently lost his wife, Elizabeth. Name the film.

Answer: The Pit and the Pendulum

I just love this one. The ending alone is enough for the price of the movie. "Do you know where you are, Bartolome?"
11. 1962. The third movie in the series, it is a trilogy of stories by Poe beginning with "Morella" and ending with "The Facts in the Case of M. Valdemar". Name the film.

Answer: Tales of Terror

Interesting trilogy of tales. The second tale is my favorite. The drinking scene between Vincent and Peter Lorre is classic. I've heard people say that "The Tell-Tale Heart" is incorporated in this, but I don't see it. Just "The Black Cat" and "The Cask of Amontillado". If you see it and can point this out to me, give me a note.
12. 1963. This fourth movie is a comedy. It features Vincent Price, Boris Karloff and Peter Lorre. It also has a young Jack Nicholson. Vincent plays Dr. Craven, Boris Dr. Scarabus, and Peter plays Dr. Bedlo - I think I gave it away. Name the film.

Answer: The Raven

Poor Vincent. He's always mourning the loss of a wife. I guess he did it so well the first time that they decided to just keep them going... Anyway, this movie is one of the funniest from the three guys. My favorite line would be: "Shall I ever hold again that radiant maiden whom the angels name Lenore?" "How should I know? What am I a fortune teller?!" Kills me every time.
13. This next film, also released in 1963, features Vincent as Magistrate Cordier, a man who becomes possessed by the horla. It makes him murder against his will the woman that he loves and bury her body in the back yard. Ewww. It was from the book by French writer Guy de Mapessant. Name the film.

Answer: Diary of a Madman

This is also one of my favorites. Vincent has kind of a Jekyll and Hyde role here, and he handles it extremely well. Nancy Kovack was an unknown at the time, but you'd never know it. She does a great job.
14. This is yet ANOTHER film released in 1963 - Vinnie had a big year in 1963 with seven movies released that year alone. This is also a comedy with the Titans of Terror: Vincent, Peter Lorre and Boris Karloff. This time Vincent is Waldo Trumbull, an undertaker who needs to stir up some business before his landlord kicks him out because he hasn't paid the rent for a year. Basil Rathbone also stars as Mr. Black. Name the film.

Answer: The Comedy of Terrors

Boris is absolutely magnificent as the deaf father, Amos Hinchley. Basil is the landlord who just won't die, and Joyce Jameson plays the ever-exasperated Annabel Trumbull. My favorite line from this film is: "He did more than collect curious objects, madam, he also fathered one!"
15. 1964. This film is the next in the Poe series. Vincent plays Prince Prospero in a film that many consider to be the best of the series. I disagree - but that's just my humble opinion. It is set in 1400s Italy with the plague all around. Name the film.

Answer: Masque of the Red Death

The scene at the end with all of the dancers becoming infected with the Red Death to me is very strange. But then again, it's only my opinion.
16. 1965. The final film of the Poe series. After eight films, all but one starring Price, Roger Corman decided to move on. But not before he made the best one. Vincent is Verden Fell, a man who again has a dead wife, and Elizabeth Shepherd plays Rowena, a lady who bears a striking resemblance to Verden's first wife. Name the film.

Answer: The Tomb of Ligeia

A psychological thriller in the spirit of Hitchcock, this film tells the story of a man who is haunted by the spirit of his dead wife - in the form of a black cat. It is interesting how this cat is ALWAYS around. The one time you think that Verden might have some peace of mind, there's the cat. Very suspenseful.
17. 1968. This was one of Vincent's most gruesome films to date, it tells the life story of one Matthew Hopkins, a man who proclaimed himself to be a witchfinder in the name of God. He killed dozens of women who were accused of being witches. The US release title slaps on the title of a poem by Poe for some reason. Name the film.

Answer: The Conqueror Worm

I always wondered why they had to put a Poe title on a film that has to do with 17th century witch hunting. Hmm. This film was directed by Michael Reeves, who committed suicide shortly after finishing this movie.
18. 1971. A doctor seeks revenge on the nine doctors who could not save his dear departed Victoria's life. Again, Vincent is a grieving husband. Nine of the ten doctors die by nine of the ten plagues of Exodus, with the worst one being preserved for the head doctor. Name the film.

Answer: The Abominable Dr. Phibes

You all should have gotten this one! This film, although it isn't my favorite, is very good. Joseph Cotten plays Dr. Vesalius, the head doctor that Dr. Phibes is really after.
19. 1973. Vincent's magnum opus before he retreated to the theater for a while, he portrays Edward Lionheart, a man who is out to get every critic who ever gave him a bad review. Name the film.

Answer: Theater of Blood

This film is rather similar to Dr. Phibes in that Lionheart kills everyone with sort of a theme. This time it is Shakespeare. Lionheart goes down his list of Shakespearean plays that he ever did and kills of the critics one by one. This one is kind of gory, too.
20. 1990. This was Vincent's next to last role in a film. It was directed by Tim Burton. Vincent played the inventor. Johnny Depp was in the lead role.

Answer: Edward Scissorhands

Vincent did such a good job in his small role as the inventor. In the scene when he died, I almost thought he wasn't faking. I'm pretty gullible, I know. I hope you've enjoyed this quiz as well as my 'Films of Bela Lugosi' Quiz - stay tuned for more!
