Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When we first see Buster, he's in a bread line. Or rather, in trouble for cutting to the front of the bread line. He is chased to the end. What goes wrong for Buster?

Answer: He gets in line behind two mannequins.

The end of the bread line is in front of a clothing store. The line moves ahead as Buster waits for the mannequins, with their backs to him, to move. Finally he sticks the "man" in front of him with a pin -- only, of course, to get no response. Bewildered, Buster tests the pin in his own leg and finds it sharp.

It's only when the store owner brings his mannequins inside that Buster realizes his mistake and runs to the window -- only to find it shut. He'll get no bread today.
2. Buster peers into a jail just as Dead Shot Dan, "a highly intelligent and kindly faced murderer", is about to have his mug shot taken. Dead Shot Dan displays his intelligence by maneuvering to get Buster's mug, not his, on the mug shot. We'll see the consequences of this later. Meanwhile, Dead Shot Dan makes his escape, and in an unrelated incident the innocent Buster ends up running from the cops. Why?

Answer: He conks a cop in the face with a horseshoe.

Buster spots the horseshoe and just ponders it -- until another man walks by, picks up the horseshoe, and chucks it over his shoulder for luck. The man walks a few feet down the sidewalk and finds a wallet full of money. Buster throws the horseshoe over his shoulder and nails the cop. The chase is on!

Buster picks up the wallet and is mistaken for a thief in "Cops" (1922) -- the same film in which he unwittingly purchases an entire household of stolen property. It's Harold Lloyd who gets the stolen purse slipped into his pocket, in "Number, Please?" (1920)

Dead Shot Dan is played by Malcolm "Mal" St. Clair, who co-wrote and co-directed "Cops".
3. After an assortment of mishaps, Buster manages to shake the cops and move on to the next town. But the machinations of Dead Shot Dan have had their desired effect. Buster's face is all over the place -- on the front page of the paper, on a huge billboard -- announcing a reward for his capture, dead or alive. People think he's Dead Shot Dan! What does Buster think of all this?

Answer: He thinks he really killed a man.

Buster thinks back to an altercation he had with a man who was picking on a pretty girl and her little dog. Buster had flipped the guy over and knocked him out. We know that the man was okay, and that the police chased him off, but a horrified Buster thinks he's dead.

Buster is so stricken with remorse that when a man staggers by after falling in some mortar, Buster thinks he's seeing the ghost of his victim!
4. As if having his face on wanted posters isn't enough, something else happens to make Buster seem even more guilty. What?

Answer: A crook shoots at a cop and makes it look like Buster did it.

Buster bumps into a plainclothes cop -- played by his childhood neighbor, Big Joe Roberts. His attempts to act casual only make him look suspicious. He stops by a doorway and loiters, hoping Cop Joe will lose interest. But a real bad guy sidles up behind him, shoots at Cop Joe from under Buster's arm, and slips the gun into Buster's hand as he makes his getaway. Buster, knowing that explanations will be useless, flees.
5. Looking guilty as sin, the innocent Buster runs, with Cop Joe in pursuit. How does Buster shake his pursuer?

Answer: He accidentally buries Cop Joe under a pile of rocks.

Buster tries the crouch-in-the spare-tire bit, only to realize he'd crouched in a display tire. The car leaves without him. He does the grab-a-passing-car bit in "Cops" (1922) -- flying out behind the car like a pennant as he's yanked offscreen. He uses the two-taxis bit in "Three Ages" (1923).

Buster dives under a wagon loaded with rocks and lures Cop Joe in after him. Once Joe is under the wagon, Buster leaps up onto the driver's seat -- only to have his motion jolt open the doors at the bottom of the wagon. The load of rocks falls down on Joe. Buster rushes back to the rock pile, but hearing no sign of life he tidies it up and bestrews it with flowers before moving on.
6. Having eluded the police, Buster loiters in a quiet, residential area. Along comes the beautiful girl Buster had befriended briefly earlier (Virginia Fox), suitcase in hand and her little dog in tow. Clearly she's not seen the newspapers that misidentify Buster as a notorious murderer. Virginia invites Buster home for supper. But her father comes home -- He's Cop Joe! How does Buster get away?

Answer: He launches himself over Joe and through the transom over the door.

Cop Joe comes home, a bit the worse for wear, but doesn't identify the guest at first because Buster is bent over, back to the door, feeding tidbits to Virginia's little dog. The two men don't see each other until they look up after saying grace over the meal. Buster's body language when he sees who the girl's father speaks volumes.

Cop Joe sends the women out of the room, then bears down on Buster. Buster crouches in his chair, then launches himself off the table, onto Joe's shoulders, and out through the transom -- leaving Cop Joe locked in is own apartment.
7. Buster manages to get out of Big Joe's apartment, but he doesn't get too much of a lead. Cop Joe is hot on his trail. Buster shakes him momentarily with what trick?

Answer: He pretends a phone booth is an elevator.

Buster darts into the phone booth next to the elevator. Cop Joe busts down the door just in time to see Buster sink down out of sight. As Joe dashes down the stairs, Buster emerges from the phone booth and gets into the elevator.
8. Big Joe keeps up the chase, and Buster keeps eluding him. Keaton milks what sets/props for as many gags as he can think of?

Answer: Stairs, an elevator, and a phone booth

Up and down stairs, in and out of the elevator, and ducking into the phone booth, Buster eludes Cop Joe. Keaton also uses the old standby gag of manipulating the indicator dial above the elevator to move the elevator itself.

Big Joe Roberts was a favorite Keaton comic foil. Keaton had known him since childhood, when Roberts was a neighbor near the Keaton summer home in Muskegon, Michigan. Roberts was in nearly every independent Keaton film, right up until his sudden death from a stroke just after the filming of "Our Hospitality" in 1923.
9. Of course, Virginia is ready to run away with Buster even though they've just met. But they face one last peril. What?

Answer: The debris from an elevator launched through the roof

Buster finally gets rid of Cop Joe by launching the elevator -- with Joe inside -- through the roof of the building. He does this simply by standing on a chair and moving the elevator indicator arrow past the top floor in one swift move. Bam! The elevator shoots out through the roof, raining debris down around Buster and Virginia as they leave the building.

Virginia Fox is in 10 of Keaton's films, beginning as his leading lady in "Neighbors" (1920), and ending as the girl who rejects him in "The Love Nest" (1923).
10. What's the last we see of Buster and Virginia?

Answer: He carries her over his shoulder into a furniture store.

They run across the street, and Buster spots a sign outside Hollywood Furniture Co. "You Furnish The Girl. We Furnish The Home." He hoists Virginia up like a sack of potatoes and heads inside.
