Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. "Othello" has been filmed many times, but which actor speaks the line warning of "the green-eyed monster" in the 1995 version?

Answer: Kenneth Branagh, as Iago

Branagh, as the evil Iago, tells Fishburne, as Othello, to "beware jealousy... the green-eyed monster" whilst really trying to convince Othello that he should be jealous, due to the actions of the latter's wife, Desdemona. Olivier and Jacobi appear in the 1965 version of "Othello".
2. Scarlett O'Hara, heroine of "Gone with the Wind" (1939), spends much of her time jealous of someone or causing the same emotion to be felt by others. Whose husband did she covet throughout the movie?

Answer: Melanie

Melanie (Olivia de Havilland) is married to the object of Scarlett's desire, Ashley Wilkes (Leslie Howard). Melanie is such a sweet person that she never thinks ill of Scarlett, and counts her as a friend always. Suellen and Carreen are Scarlett's sisters, and Prissy is pressed into service to help Scarlett deliver Melanie's baby in beleaguered Atlanta.
3. The eponymous heroine of "Gilda" (1946) does her best to make the men in her life - all of them - green with envy. She flirts with her old boyfriend Johnny (Glenn Ford) in front of her husband, and openly carries on with casual acquaintances, leading them on as well. Who stars as Gilda?

Answer: Rita Hayworth

Gilda's theme song is "Put the Blame on Mame", sung more than once by the character (dubbed by Anita Ellis). On one occasion Hayworth performs a seductive dance along with the song. The film is set in Argentina, just at the end of WWII and involves casinos, cartels and romance. Hayworth's other credits include "Separate Tables", "Affair in Trinidad" (also with Glenn Ford) and "Pal Joey".
4. At the beginning of "Mister Roberts", Lt (jg) Doug Roberts sees something that causes jealousy to stir inside him. What does he see?

Answer: A task force moving toward the fighting

Stuck on a cargo ship in a "safe" area of the Pacific, Roberts (Henry Fonda) longs to catch up with the task force and join the fighting before the war is over. He envies the men aboard those ships. His captain (James Cagney) refuses to approve his transfer requests, so Roberts carries on with his duties as cargo officer and does his best to secure liberty for the crew who are long overdue for it. Things come to a head when Victory in Europe is announced, and after Roberts deals with the palm tree, symbol of the captain's tyranny, the crew try to help the lieutenant get his wish.
5. In what 1963 musical comedy does Bobby Rydell lead a male chorus in singing "We hate you Conrad, oh yes we do!" whilst their girlfriends are professing their love for Conrad to the same tune?

Answer: Bye Bye Birdie

Conrad is singer Conrad Birdie (Jesse Pearson) whose hip-swinging style is reminiscent of Elvis Presley, and whose voice has teenage girls swooning. Birdie is about to be drafted into the army, and Hugo's (Rydell) girlfriend, Kim (Ann-Margret) has been chosen to kiss Birdie "bye bye" on behalf of all his fans, on TV's "Ed Sullivan Show".

Naturally, Hugo and all the other boyfriends are jealous of the attention the singer is getting from the girls.
6. In Noel Coward's 1942 film "In Which We Serve", Celia Johnson as Mrs Kinross proposes a toast to her "greatest rival". This is not a person, but her husband's ship.

Answer: True

Noel Coward himself plays Captain Kinross, as well as directing and writing this "story of a ship", told in flashback as survivors of its sinking cling to a life raft in the Mediterranean. In one of these scenes the ship's officers are entertaining their wives and girlfriends on board ship, and during a round of toasts the captain's wife advises the younger women that they will have to compete with HMS Torrin for their men's affection.
7. In "The Lion King" (1994), Scar is jealous of his brother Mufasa's position as king, and of the fact that his nephew Simba is the heir-apparent. Who provides the voice of Scar, who plots to rid himself of both troublesome relatives?

Answer: Jeremy Irons

Although Scar kills Mufasa (Jones) and blames Simba (Jonathan Taylor Thomas, and later Broderick), the latter grows up among friends, including Timon (Lane). Once grown, Simba is in a position to deal with his uncle.

Irons' other credits include "Reversal of Fortune" (1990), for which he received a Best Actor Oscar, and also "Die Hard, with a Vengeance" (1995).
8. The 1935 Fred Astaire-Ginger Rogers' musical comedy "Top Hat" involves a situation in which Ginger's character, Dale Tremont, fears that her friend Madge (Helen Broderick) will be upset and even jealous of something Dale has done (or thinks she has). What is that?

Answer: She thinks she has encouraged Madge's husband to become infatuated with her.

In a case of mistaken identity, it is not Madge's husband Horace (Edward Everett Horton) who has fallen for Dale, but dancer Jerry Travers (none other than Fred Astaire). After a few musical numbers, and many misunderstandings, everything eventually works out for the best.
9. In "Notes on a Scandal" (2006) teacher Sheba Hart (Cate Blanchett) engages in an illicit affair with one of her male students. Who plays the teacher who discovers this secret, and becomes jealous, wishing to be the one to win Sheba's affection?

Answer: Judi Dench

Judi Dench is quite wonderfully evil as Barbara Covett, who takes rejection badly and plots against Sheba thereafter. Bill Nighy plays Sheba's husband, who has much more reason to be envious.

As well as playing M in several "James Bond" movies, Dame Judi Dench has appeared in "Philomena" (2013) and 2011's "The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel" and its 2015 sequel.
10. Jealous not only of Kathy Selden's singing voice, but because Don Lockwood favours Kathy over her, Lina Lamont seeks to keep Kathy's name out of the credits of the movie "The Dancing Cavalier". In what film does this happen?

Answer: Singin' in the Rain

Talking pictures have arrived, and the silent movie "The Duelling Cavalier" is being remade as a musical. Don Lockwood (Gene Kelly) has no problem with the transition, but co-star Lina (Jean Hagen) has a voice that sounds like chalk squealing on a blackboard.

The solution? Dub Kathy's voice for hers, especially the songs. Debbie Reynolds plays Kathy, and Donald O'Connor is Cosmo, Don's friend. Gene Kelly performs the title song.
