Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Start off easy, what year was this masterpiece released in the US?

Answer: 1961

This film came 10 years after Paul Newman appeared in the TV Series 'Tales of Tommorow' which also once starred the late James Dean.
2. What word was put before 'Eddie Felson' to give him his 'pool' nickname?

Answer: Fast

It seems all pool and snooker players have nicknames these days, no messing around with Eddie, he plays fast and gambles fast, hence 'Fast' Eddie Felson.
3. Paul Newman was 36 years old when he made 'The Hustler'.

Answer: True

Indeed he was 36, and 25 years later he reprised his role in 'The Color of Money', directed by Martin Scorsese, which also starred a young Tom Cruise.
4. Eddie Felson's love interest in the film is actress Piper Laurie. In which Dario Argento horror movie did she also star? (It was in 1993.)

Answer: Trauma

This wasn't the only horror film in which she was to star, Piper Laurie can also be seen in both the 'Carrie' movies. She also starred in the Robert Rodriguez's film 'The Faculty'.
5. ______ Gordon is the name of the ruthless manager that Eddie Felson works with after first refusing the offer.

Answer: Bert

Bert Gordon, played by George C. Scott, deserved an Oscar for this role in my opinion. He actually refused to be nominated for the Best Actor in a Supporting Role Oscar, the same Oscar that he had won two years earlier for his performance in 'Anatomy of a Murder'.
6. Who played the role of the legendary pool player Minnesota Fats in 'The Hustler'?

Answer: Jackie Gleason

In fact, Minnesota Fats wasn't a real-life legendary pool player at all, he was a reasonable player by the name of Rudolph Walter Wanderone Jr, who changed his name to Minnesota Fats and became famous on account of people thinking that the character in 'The Hustler' was based on him!
7. Willie Masconi, 14-time world billiards champion, has a cameo in the film. (Not including his hands doing a tricky masse shot.)

Answer: True

He plays a character called Willie who holds the betting money during the first match between Eddie and Fats. Eddie's manager also sits right in front of a poster of Willie during this same scene.
8. With a cocky look in his eye, and whilst chalking his cue, how much money does Eddie say he is going to win in one night?

Answer: $10,000

Well how is this for cocky then? Willie Masconi, in a 1954 pool exhibition, potted 526 balls in a row playing straight pool without missing once! He didn't make $10,000 for doing it though!
9. The 'Raging Bull' himself, Jake LaMotta, has a cameo in the film as a bartender.

Answer: True

This was the first, but not the only, film in which he was to star. Jake LaMotta can also be seen in 'Confessions of a Psycho Cat' (1968), 'Maniac Cop' (1988) and 'Blue Vengeance' (1992) as well as others.
10. Which of these is a pool hall that Eddie plays most of his big matches in?

Answer: Ames

Ames, at the time of filming, was a real pool hall situated on 47th Street on the second floor, just off Broadway, in New York. Unfortunatly, although big in its day, during the sixties the club was in decline.
