The movie opens with Newton (Steve Martin) presenting his long-time sweetheart, Becky, with her engagement present. It is a house which he has designed and built, with a huge red ribbon around it. Becky (Dana Delany) is a bit stunned, but says no to Newton's question of will she marry him.

Gwen works at the Cafe Budapest, where the architectural firm Davis works for is having a gathering to celebrate the opening of their latest office building. Gwen lets him think that she doesn't speak English, but he later meets her when she's leaving work. They sleep together and he's gone when Gwen wakes up the next morning.

Davis had drawn the house he built on a napkin, which he left at Gwen's place. He had also told her that the house was empty, so Gwen bought a bus ticket to Dobbs Mill. After she found the house, Gwen went to the market for groceries. She asked Travis to put everything on Newton Davis's account, and Travis asked what her relationship was to Newton. Becky was also in the store, and heard Gwen tell Travis she was Davis's wife. Becky introduced herself to Gwen and showed her the hardware store. Gwen was loaded down with packages when she came upon a rummage sale and saw a recliner.

She asked a gentleman working there if he could deliver the chair and gave the address. He said that was Newton Davis's house. Gwen said, "I'm his wife", to which the man responded, "I'm his father".

Most of what comes out of Gwen's mouth is a lie, especially what she tells Becky about her courtship and marriage to Davis. After Gwen tells Becky about the fictional promotion, everyone in town seems to know about it, even Rev. Lipton. Later, Davis actually does receive a promotion because of Gwen.

Davis has been hanging onto the house because he didn't want to acknowledge Becky's rejection. He finally decides to sell it and goes to Dobbs Mill to put up a 'For Sale' sign. He's amazed to see flowers outside and the house completely furnished. He recognizes Gwen and remembers her as the waitress. Davis sees and recognizes the coffee table, and is horrified to learn that everyone, including his parents, believe that he and Gwen are married.

Davis isn't nearly as good as Gwen at coming up with lies, so she's pretty upset that he explains their marriage problems being due to her having slept with an old boyfriend, especially one named Boomer. Davis's parents, Edna and George (Julie Harris and Donald Moffat), even bring over Rev. Lipton to counsel Davis and Gwen about their marriage problems.

Davis is just about to tell Becky the truth when she tells him how envious she is of Gwen being married to him. He realizes that she finds him more attractive now, and once he and Gwen stage a breakup and divorce, he and Becky can get together.

He comes home with Chinese food and tells Gwen he figured she would be exhausted after shopping with his mother all day. Then he mentions how she always looks so pert and asks her to stop wearing certain things because it's a turn-on to him. She thinks he means tight and revealing things, but he says no, things like a denim shirt or a baggy sweater. Gwen had earlier told Becky that she and Davis had this communication between them.

She gave an example of a day when she would be so exhausted and just couldn't deal with dinner, and he would bring home Chinese for dinner because he just knew.

Davis's parents think a reception for all of the relatives would be nice. Davis doesn't want to have it, but after Gwen charms Mr. Mosby, the head of Davis's company, Davis invites him to the house for the reception. Gwen has to come up with some parents quickly, and asks Mary and Ralph, two street people she would see outside of her apartment in Boston, to serve as her parents at the reception.

At the reception, Becky and her friends are laughing about Davis stories. Becky mentions some things that she and Davis did when they were younger, and Gwen tries to top her stories. Gwen then announces to everyone that she knows Becky is in love with Davis, and that Davis wants Becky.

She leaves the room sobbing and Davis follows her outside. Davis thinks Gwen is pretending to be upset, but she really is jealous about Becky because she's fallen in love with Davis. Gwen stuns Davis by saying that she thinks their marriage is worth saving and she wants it to work.

When Davis asks "What marriage?", Gwen walks away and asks one of the caterers for a ride into town. Becky comes out and asks Davis if everything Gwen told her about their meeting, their trip to Maui and a treehouse he built for her was true.

When faced with Gwen leaving, Davis realizes he loves her and tells Becky that everything Gwen said was true. Davis catches Gwen at the bus stop and tells her he loves her and wants to marry her.

She's not impressed, so he says to wait, and asks her to remember the time he had himself delivered to her in a box for her birthday. His story involves being delivered to the wrong address, and he says she never read the card. The bus driver asks what the card said, and Davis replies "Marry me, I'm lost without you". Gwen falls into his arms and they live happily ever after.
