Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. In "The Graduate", Dustin Hoffman plays Ben Braddock, a young man trying to find his way in the world. What relation does the title have to the movie?

Answer: He just graduated from college.

This was Dustin Hoffman's first big movie. At the beginning of the movie, we find out that Ben has just graduated from college and he is trying to figure out what to do with his life. While he is getting advice from some friends of the family, we hear the classic one word movie line, "Plastics!".

The movie also stars Anne Bancroft and featured original music by Paul Simon. Hoffman was chosen for his average looks since his character needed to be an underdog of sorts and a little bit awkward. This is why Robert Redford, who was originally cast in the lead, was replaced with Hoffman by the director.
2. "Ocean's Eleven" starred Frank Sinatra, and was later remade starring George Clooney. What is the title "Ocean's Eleven" referring to?

Answer: The lead character and his group of thieves.

Danny Ocean plans to rob three major Las Vegas casinos at the same time. To accomplish this he hires a specialized group of thieves, each to perform a specific task, in order to pull off the heist. In the closing shot of the 1960 version of the film, the eleven walk past the famous sign in front of the Sands Hotel.

The five members of the Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Joey Bishop, and Peter Lawford) are billed on the sign. All of them starred in this movie.
3. In 1971, George Lucas directed "THX 1138". What does the title stand for?

Answer: The name of the lead character

All of the characters in the film had names similar to THX 1138. One of the film's main themes was how, in the future, people are all reduced to government issued codes in place of names. The movie was the first to be Produced by Francis Ford Coppola's new production company. "THX 1138" starred Robert Duvall and was executive produced by Coppola. One year later in 1972, Coppola would release "The Godfather" starring Robert Duvall.

Some of the pick-up scenes in "The Godfather" were shot by George Lucas.
4. In the Coen Brothers movie "The Big Lebowski", which actor portrays the title character?

Answer: David Huddleston

This is a tricky question as there are two characters named Jeffrey Lebowski. Jeff Bridges plays the lead character named Jeffrey Lebowski who is mistaken for another character of the same name. This other character is "The Big Lebowski". "Big" is referring to the fact that he is rich and important. Bridge's character was mostly referred to in the movie as "the Dude". David Huddleston, who plays The Big Lebowski, has acted on TV and in movies since the early '60s.

His impressive resume includes such movies as "Blazing Saddles" and "Breakheart Pass", and TV shows like "Gunsmoke" and "Sanford and Son".
5. In the James L. Brooks movie "As Good As It Gets", which actor says the title and where do they say it?

Answer: Jack Nicholson in a psychiatrist's waiting room

Jack Nicholson won an Oscar for his performace as Melvin Udall in this great comedy. While waiting to see his psychiatrist, Jack says the line, "What if this is as good as it gets?" He says this as he is leaving his psychiatrist's office, frustrated at not being able to get a last minute appointment. According to the director, James L. Brooks, the movie was originally going to be titled "Old Friends", until Hans Zimmer, who wrote the original music for the movie, suggested, "What about that thing he says in the psychiatrist's office?".
6. In the Richard Donner film "Ladyhawke", what is the title referring to?

Answer: Michelle Pfeiffer's character turns into a hawk every sunrise.

Pfeiffer's character is only human at night and is a hawk by day. She is in love with Rutger Hauer's character who is a wolf by night and human in the day. Finding a way to combat this curse is the central plot of the film. This fantasy movie proves that you can have a great fantastical story without big budget special effects. The director, Richard Donner, is famous for such films as "Scrooged", "The Goonies", and "Lethal Weapon". Donner had his start in TV, directing episodes of "Gilligan's Island" and "Perry Mason", to name a couple.
7. In the John Travolta movie "Phenomenon", John's character transforms into a genius with psychic powers. What is the cause of the Phenomenon and how was it acquired?

Answer: An unusual brain tumor and what caused it is not well defined

This movie explores the powers of the human mind in a very interesting way. Travolta's character develops amazing powers including knowing when earthquakes are coming and being able to lower his own blood pressure. In one scene he is asked to name as many mammals in sixty seconds as he can.

He decides to do it in alphabetical order. The mammals he names are: Aardvark, baboon, caribou, dolphin, eohippus, fox, gorilla, hyena, ibex, jackal, kangaroo, lion, marmoset, Newfoundland, ocelot, panda, rat, sloth, tiger, unicorn, varmint, whale, yak, and zebra.

Answer: The Army of the 12 Monkeys led by Brad Pitt

Parry, played by Robin Williams, saw his wife shot and murdered right in front of his eyes and as a result, went crazy. He is helped by Jack Lucas to get his life back together. Parry's adventures in the movie mirror the legendary round table knight Percival on his search for the Holy Grail. Parry and Percival both do battle with a red knight and have their lives turned around from kissing a woman.
10. In Peter Jackson's version of "The Return of the King", who is the king that the title is talking about?

Answer: Aragorn
