quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Our movie opens during a reception at the White House, and President George Bush (John Roarke, in a dead-on performance) opens the dinner by making a statement. In that statement, he is marking what occasion?

Answer: National Law Enforcement Week

Poor Barbara Bush (Margery Ross)! On the way to the table, Frank opens a bathroom door in her face! Then, at the table, he yanks her chair out from under her, causing the entire table setting to collapse on top of her! Did you notice the pit-crew efficiency with which the table was reset?
2. Why was Frank Drebin (Leslie Nielsen) at the White House reception?

Answer: He had killed 1,000 drug dealers

After his introduction by Commissioner Brumford, Frank said "In all honesty, the last two I backed over with my car. Luckily, they turned out to be drug dealers."
3. Which of the following is not an acronym for the energy coalition representatives present at the dinner?

Answer: PEST

SPIL is "Society of Petroleum Industry Leaders," who controlled the oil industry. SMoCE is "Society for More Coal Energy" (The C is pronounced like a K), who dealt with the coal industry. And KABOOM is "Key Atomic Benefits Office Of Mankind," who monitored the nuclear industry.
4. Who was to give a speech regarding the future of energy consumption?

Answer: Albert Mainheimer

Dr. Albert S. Mainheimer was an eminant scientist in the field of alternative power sources. His speech could potentially have tremendous impact on the current energy coalitions. The other three gentlemen were heads of the oil, coal and nuclear energy commissions.
5. At the end of the title sequence, the Police Squad car pulls over a celebrity. Who?

Answer: Zsa Zsa Gabor

She gets pulled over. Then, she steps out of her car, walks up to the siren light, smacks it off with her hand, and walks back to her car. On the way back, she makes a rather lewd remark about how this seems to happen whenever she goes shopping. In 1989, Zsa Zsa Gabor was arrested and charged with assault of a police officer during a "routine traffic stop" (She had slapped him).

She was also charged with, among other things, driving with an expired license and having an open container of alcohol in the car.

She went to court, was found guilty, and had to spend three days in jail. If you did not know about this before, now you get it, don't you?
6. When we first see Jane (Priscilla Presley), what is she holding in her hands?

Answer: A picture of Frank and the Queen

The photo is from a newspaper clipping, and it shows Frank and the Queen in their "compromising position" (from the first movie).
7. What did the security guards at the Institute do with the bomb?

Answer: Explode it

Norm (the janitor): "Hey, Al...Ken. Look at this. Found this in the wastebasket."
(Norm shows them the bomb)
Ken: "Hey, that's a pretty nice clock. Wonder why they threw it out?"
Al (checking his watch): "It's probably because it's four minutes too slow. Here, let me fix it." (Sets the clock on the bomb to the correct time) "There."
BOOM!
8. Frank and Jane meet up at the crime scene and catch up on things. What did they not discuss?

Answer: Her letters to him

Jane: "Frank."
Frank: "Jane. I didn't know you lived here."
Jane: "I moved here two years ago."
Frank: "How are the children?"
Jane: "We didn't have any children."
Frank: "Oh, yes. Of course..."
Jane: "How was your prostate operation?"
Frank: "Fine. Good as new. In fact, better than ever."

By the way, they discussed her letters later in the movie, at the lounge.
9. Which of the following is not true of Albert Mainheimer (Richard Griffiths)?

Answer: He is left-handed

Dr. Mainheimer is right-handed. His imposter, Earl Hacker (also played by Richard Griffiths) is the one who is left-handed.
10. Which of the following is true of Quentin Hapsburg (Robert Goulet)?

Answer: He is president of Hexagon Oil

Early in the movie, Jane introduces Hapsburg to Frank; until this time, the two had never met. In her introduction, we learn that he is the president of Hexagon Oil. And Hapsburg never performed on Broadway, but Robert Goulet did; among his many stage credits were "Happy Time" (for which he won a Tony Award) and "Camelot".
11. When Frank stops at The Blue Note for a drink, we see pictures of various disasters along the walls of the lounge. Which of these is the first one shown?

Answer: The San Francisco Earthquake of 1906

Other photos were of Michael Dukakis, whose 1988 presidential campaign was among the worst in history, and of the Hubble Space Telescope, which was constructed with a serious flaw in its mirror (The flaw was later fixed).
12. Ted, the Police Squad lab supervisor, was booked on "Geraldo" because he had find timbers that he believed were once part of Noah's Ark.

Answer: False

Actually, he was to give an address at the American Archealogical Society in Boston because of the timbers. He was going on "Geraldo" because his wife was "a transsexual Satan-worshipper."
13. The thug in this film was an ex-boxer named Hector Savage (Anthony James). Which of these boxing nicknames was his?

Answer: Kid Minneapolis

Hector Savage was also known as Joey Chicago. In this scene, Frank, Ed, and Nordberg go into this very confusing discussion of boxers' names. If you were unable to follow along, don't worry; I don't think we were meant to.
14. Frank, Ed, and Nordberg go to an adult novelty shop to check out a lead on Hector Savage, when Frank sees a red van that matched one seen by Jane a few nights before. Frank then calls to Nordberg, who says "No problem." What was Nordberg's task?

Answer: Install a homing beacon on the van

Unfortunately, Nordberg got stuck underneath the van when Savage made his getaway.
15. See if you can follow along here: Nordberg is on a mechanic's creeper, stuck underneath the van as it drives trough town. He manages to free himself, only to get stuck under the front of Frank and Ed's car. Then, Frank and Ed stop at a house, where Savage is surrounded by police, but Nordberg keeps going, only to find himself under a bus! Where is the bus going?

Answer: Detroit

Later, Frank is on the phone, talking to Ed: "Ed, I'm on to something big. I'm going to need you and Nordberg tomorrow...What's he doing in Detroit?...Well, send him plane fare and a new pair of pants."
16. During the reception at Hapsburg's house, Frank confronts him, but not before enjoying a dance with Jane. As he spins her off the floor, a gentleman at the party pops a piece of food into her mouth. What was it?

Answer: A green olive

This was one of those gags that had to be perfectly timed. That one shot of Jane popping an olive was done a minimum of 27 times!
17. After the reception, Jane takes a shower. In walks Savage, who was hired to shoot her. But she starts singing a Barbra Streisand song and Savage joins in. What was the title of the song?

Answer: The Way We Were

It's a good thing Frank was there on the phone. He thwarted the murder attempt and killed Savage (with a fire hose). What follows is a very funny parody of the love scene from "Ghost", complete with clay wheel and the song "Unchained Melody". By the way, "Ghost" was directed by ZAZ Team member Jerry Zucker (David Zucker directed the "Naked Gun" films). "ZAZ" stands for David Zucker, Jim Abrahams, and Jerry Zucker.
18. Frank is tied up at Hapsburg's warehouse; with him, also tied up, is the man who was to give the energy lecture. After Hapsburg & Co. leave, Frank tries rubbing his ropes on the shelving to free himself. Unfortunately, the rubbing shakes the shelving, causing the lecturer to be hit on the head with (among other things) horseshoes, softballs, and a rack a pool balls. What was the first pool ball to hit his head?

Answer: 5-ball

Look closely, and you will see the lead ball in the rack was orange and solid. That is the 5-ball. The 11-ball is red and striped, the 3-ball is red and solid, and the 13-ball is orange and striped. Personally, I think the 13-ball should've been the first to land on Mainehimer's head; THAT would've been hilarious!
19. At the Press Club dinner, where the energy speech was to be given, Frank & Co. were unable to get in through the back door, as planned. So, they disguised themselves as a mariachi band and suddenly found themselves on the stage for the press dinner. What song did they perform?

Answer: Bésame Mucho

"Bésame Mucho" was written by Consuelo Velázquez in 1941, with English lyrics by Sunny Skylar. When Frank, Ed, and Dr. Mainheimer left the stage, Nordberg stayed behind to perform a trumpet solo. He must've done a really good job, because an old lady in the audience throw her hotel key to him when he finished!
20. During the big shootout, what was Nordberg doing?

Answer: building a howitzer

Nordberg, the gadget man of Police Squad, spent the entire length of the shootout reaching for one gun part after another. Finally, when Drebin told Nordberg to cover him, a single blast blew out the door through which Hapsburg and Jane (now his hostage) had gone. When Drebin turned around, there sat Nordberg (army helmet and all), at the controls of a howitzer!
21. Hapsburg had a back-up plan, in case the imposter failed to give the falsified energy speech. Plan B called for the detonation of a nuclear device at the hotel where the speech was taking place. Who told Drebin about Plan B?

Answer: Hapsburg

The first guy died before Frank could learn about Plan B. The second guy was going to tell him, but when Frank said "Talk, you low-life scum!" the second guy looked him square in the eye and told him "Gee, if that's your attitude, forget it!" and died. It was Hapsburg who revealed the bomb and set it for detonation.
22. How did Hapsburg die?

Answer: He was attacked by a lion

Frank had Hapsburg halfway out a window during their fight. At that point, Hapsburg was ready to give the bomb's abort code, but he only got half the code out when Ed came up and knocked Hapsburg out the window completely. He survived the fall but, just as he was walking away, a lion came out of nowhere and attacked him.
23. Back at the Press Club dinner, the speech became so boring, everyone fell asleep! Ed and Nordberg had to think of a way to wake them up, and quickly! What did they use?

Answer: a romance novel

As Nordberg went to turn the lights up, Ed handed a steamy romance novel to Dr. Mainheimer and told him to read. As Mainheimer read from the book, everyone started waking up! Then, Nordberg took the stage and said "All right, listen up, everyone! I want you to calmly file towards the exits. That's it, that's it. Nobody run; just walk, single-file. That's it. Now, if we just stay calm, no one's going to be harmed by the huge bomb that's going to explode any minute..." (and panic ensues!). By the way, did you spot the "Twilight Zone" gag during the panic? A guy carrying a book entitled "To Serve Man" started yelling "It's a cook book!" to whomever would listen!
24. How did Frank disable the bomb?

Answer: He tripped over the power cord

There was no time to figure out the abort code, even though Hapsburg had given half of it to Frank. And yes, Frank's coat did get caught in the mechanism, but that didn't stop the countdown. At the last second, he and Jane started running for the exit.

At that moment, he tripped over the bomb's electrical cord, cutting power to the device and rendering it harmless. And the plug was one of those cheesy, clip-on replacment plugs, too! You would think that a guy who had friends in such high places in the energy industry would know better...
25. At the end of the movie, the President offers Frank a shot at being head of a new federal bureau of Police Squad. Does Frank accept the offer?

Answer: No

As much as this position has been a dream of his, Frank declined because he had made a promise to Jane to never let police work interfere with their relationship again. Alas, that didn't last long, because Frank is brought out of retirement in "Naked Gun 33-1/3: The Final Insult". That's an entirely different quiz, altogether ("That's an entirely different quiz").
