Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who plays Paul Chauvelin?

Answer: Sir Ian McKellan

Not only does Ian play Paul, but he is also Gandalf in "The Lord of the Rings". Ian has a long film history, having been in 58 movies. Not only can he play the good guy (Gandalf, for example), he can also play the bad guy (Magneto in "X-Men" and "X-2").
James Villiers plays the Baron de Batz, Anthony Andrews plays Percy Blakeney, and Malcolm Jamieson plays Armand St. Just.
2. What is the symbol of the man in this movie, who saves the French aristocrats?

Answer: The Scarlet Pimpernel

The Scarlet Pimpernel is actually Percy's family seal. The Scarlet Pimpernel is a red, star-shaped flower.
Although it is never directly stated, Paul hints at the fact that perhaps the Scarlet Pimpernel is rescuing the French is because "he came from that privileged class, taught by French tutors, raised by French governesses..." (Paul to Robspiere). Perhaps this is the reason Percy has a soft spot for the French aristocrats.
3. What is the name of Percy's yacht?

Answer: The Daydream

At the end of the movie, Percy and Marguerite leave the island fortress on the Daydream, and sail back to England.
4. Percy rescues a French aristocrat while not wearing any disguise.

Answer: True

That is one "disguise" that was perfectly timed, and a rescue that wasn't suspected by the French government. Percy and Marguerite are going on a picnic. There is a little compartment in their coach that holds an aristocrat.
5. What is the name of the man that Marguerite is accused of betraying?

Answer: The Marquis de St. Cyr

Paul was in Marguerite's dressing room after one of her plays. He found a note she had picked up, informing the Baron de Batz that the "Dauphin is to be held prisoner in the temple." After reading this, he requested that she sign the arrest warrant for the Marquis, since he not only wrote the note, but he also had some of his men attack Marguerite's brother, Armand. Marguerite never signed the warrant, but her name was on it nonetheless. Paul forged her signature in order to get what he wanted, the Marquis de St. Cyr dead. St. Cyr was beheaded, along with his entire family. Percy, a friend of the Marquis, found out this dreadful news on Percy's wedding day.
6. To whom is the Baron de Batz selling secret information to about the French?

Answer: The Austrians

The man seems to lead a double life, selling secret information about one country to another, and vice versa.
7. At the end of the movie, who dons Chauvelin's clothing and pretends to be Chauvelin?

Answer: Armand St. Just

At first Percy was planning on putting on Chauvelin's clothing and playing that role, but Armand convinced Percy to let him do it, as a way of making up for what he'd done. Armand held a cloth up to his mouth to disguise his voice, and to sound a little like Paul.

This was necessary because Paul had told his soldiers to come in and get him if he didn't return within a certain amount of time. Since Paul was being held by the good guys, someone had to don Paul's clothing. This way, the soldiers would think Paul was in the coach, and Percy and his band could get away safely.
8. Who wins the sword fight in the end of the movie?

Answer: Percy Blakeney

At first, Percy and Chauvelin were just fighting with their swords. Then Percy started to take Chauvelin's clothes apart. First, he untied Chauvelin's bow tie with his sword. Then Percy started cutting the buttons off of Chauvelin's vest. Lastly, he took the vest off of Chauvelin.
9. What is the name of Marguerite's understudy?

Answer: Louise

Every actor and actress in the theater has an understudy. This person also memorizes all of the character's lines and actions. If the main actor or actress gets sick, or something happens to them, the understudy can take the actor's place, and the play can go on. Louise falls for Marguerite's brother Armand.
10. How many people did Percy and his band rescue?

Answer: 7

He rescues the Beaulieu family of three, the Duke de Leon, Suzanne and her mother, and last of all, he rescues the the Dauphin.
