Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. The following is a quote from "Zero Dark Thirty" (2012): Maya: "You can't run a global network of interconnected cells from a cave". A global network of interconnected cells smacks of social networks but in this case they are are terrorist cells. Who played Maya in this explosive movie?

Answer: Jessica Chastain

"Zero Dark Thirty" was something of a breakout role for Jessica Chastain. She was nominated for a Best Actress Oscar and won a Golden Globe Best Actress in a Motion Picture (Drama).
The movie is about the ten year search for Osama Bin Laden post-2011 and only Maya (Chastain) is convinced where he is. The quote is a reference to his whereabouts.
The title is military-speak for half past midnight, a metaphor for the darkness and secrecy of the mission the movie covers. The movie was "explosive" not in the conventional sense but as this movie showed Americans torturing Iraqis, this caused much discomfort in the movie's home country.

2. Jon Heder is a highly charged teen who uses the following line to bemoan the fact that he cannot get a date in which 2004 film? "You know, like numchuku skills, bow hunting skills, computer hacking skills... Girls only want boyfriends who have great skills!"

Answer: Napoleon Dynamite

Napoleon is sullen, aloof and socially awkward. He's not good at sport and is regularly having to deal with bullies. His two friends at school are a shy girl, Deb, and a Mexican exchange student called Pedro whom Napoleon helps to run for class president. In the above scene he struggles to understand what a potential date could possibly see in him. Pedro, as usual, gets straight to the heart of the matter by asking Napoleon if he's actually asked the prospective girl to go with him and then suggests that he uses his impressive art skills to draw a picture of her and present it to her as a gift.

4. In possibly his most famous movie role Peter O'Toole is asked what it is that attracts him to the desert. He succinctly responds "It's clean". In which critically acclaimed film could one hear this exchange?

Answer: Lawrence of Arabia

Lawrence's famous "It's clean" response was prompted from a question by Jackson Bentley who was perplexed as to why Lawrence had stayed in the desert so long and that he seemed to enjoy it.

Paying me to lie for you, and calling me every name in the book. And you know what? It was just like Hester in 'The Scarlet Letter'". Which film, starring Emma Stone as Olive Penderghast, ends with this speech from a webcast, calling time on her life as the biggest rumor subject of high school?

Answer: Easy A

Olive moves to a new school and makes the mistake of using the high school gossip factory to improve her social life. Inspired by Nathaniel Hawthorne's "The Scarlet Letter", Olive acts sexually active and aware to get people to like her, until the attention becomes overwhelming. 6. Which 1972 George Roy Hill film, based on a novel by Kurt Vonnegut, sees an alien explain to Billy Pilgrim how the world ends with the following quote? "While we're experimenting with new fuels, a Tralfamadorian test pilot panics, presses the wrong button, and the whole universe disappears".

Answer: Slaughterhouse-Five

Billy Pilgrim, who'd survived the bombing of Dresden as a prisoner of war (POW) during World War II and suffered post traumatic stress as a result, narrates segments of his life during this film in random order. These include his experiences as a POW, his confrontations with Paul Lazzaro who is looking to kill him, his marriage to the affluent Valencia and the raising of his children. On his daughter's wedding night he is abducted by aliens, taken to Tralfamadore, placed as an exhibit in a zoo and forced to mate with a lost Hollywood starlet. It is during this latter period that the above quote arises and Billy discovers that the aliens have the ability to see in four dimensions. This enables them to see events before they occur and Billy argues that they should be using this power to change the course of events.

7. The following quote is from "Mean Girls": Janis: "Gretchen Wieners knows everybody's business, she knows everything about everyone". Damian: "That's why her hair is so big, it's full of secrets". Which "Party of Five" alumna played Gretchen?

Answer: Lacey Chabert

Only Lacey Chabert and Neve Campbell were on "Party of Five" and only Lacey was in "Mean Girls". At school she has to navigate the teenage world of popularity and gossip.

Janis (Lizzy Caplan) and Damian (Daniel Franzese) befriend Cady on her first day and warn her about the popular girls called the Plastics. Gretchen (Lacey Chabert) is one of the followers of Regina George (Rachel McAdams). As Janis points out she knows all of the gossip of the school.

Chabert appeared on "Party of Five" from 1994 to 2000. She has remained active in both movies and on TV since.

9. "Before Sunset" (2004) was a talky-talky movie where the entire movie is two people talking to one another. Jesse says to Celine, "I feel like if someone were to touch me, I'd dissolve into molecules". Who play Jesse and Celine?

Answer: Ethan Hawke and Julie Delpy

This movie is a sequel to "Before Sunrise" (1995) when two young people shared a night in Vienna nine years earlier and lost touch. They meet in Paris and the entire movie is a dialogue between the two former lovers albeit set against a summery Paris that they walk through. The two leads wrote the screenplay themselves and the movie was shot in long takes that feel as if it is shot in real time. Not a gossipy movie really but certainly one of the most dialogue driven (and enjoyable) movies i have ever seen.
