Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. We begin with the quirky, or the downright bizarre, depending on your perspective. Pee-Wee Herman took the world by storm with his 1985 film debut 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure', a quaint romp starring a boy and his bike. What director also made his feature film debut with this classic comedy?

Answer: Tim Burton

Co-writing the script for 'Pee-Wee's Big Adventure' was none other than Phil Hartman, one of the greatest 'SNL' performers of all time. Phil also appeared in the film as a reporter towards the very end.
2. The 1980s were a teen film-goer's paradise. Take for example 'The Breakfast Club', featuring the acting talents of Judd Nelson, Emilio Estevez, Anthony Michael Hall, Molly Ringwald and which of the following?

Answer: Ally Sheedy

One of several great teen-oriented films created by John Hughes in the 1980s, the director touched an entire generation with his marvelous writing skills. By the way, did you know that John Hughes appeared briefly in the film as Brian's father?
3. In this bureaucratic, dystopian future film technocrats spend meaningless hours in their redundant positions. In particular, one of these bureaucrats dreams of a fantastical alternative life, in Walter Mitty fashion, all the while avoiding the authorities who have linked him to a series of terrorist bombings. What Terry Gilliam film fits this description?

Answer: Brazil

'Brazil' is both a visual treat and an intellectual adventure. It stars Jonathan Pryce as Sam Lowry, and also features the acting work of Robert De Niro, Katherine Helmond, Ian Holm, Bob Hoskins, Michael Palin and several others. Definitely worth your time!
4. 'Ran', a grand spectacle based in part on the play 'King Lear' by Shakespeare, was one of the last films by what legendary Japanese director?

Answer: Akira Kurosawa

Akira Kurosawa, who brought us such classics as 'The Seven Samurai', 'Rashomon' and 'Yojimbo', came back one more time for this 1985 classic that features some of the most magnificent battle scenes ever filmed. 'Ran' was the most expensive Japanese film ever produced, and it shows!
5. An example of a film that can be both top-grossing and great at the same time, what 1985 film featured Michael J. Fox as a young man inadvertently flung back to 1955 where he must work as matchmaker for his own parents, all the while working with his crazy scientist friend Dr. Brown to return to 1985?

Answer: Back to the Future

Did you know that Eric Stoltz was originally cast as Marty McFly in 'Back to the Future' because the first choice, Michael J. Fox, was initially unavailable? It seems that Fox had a certain hit show called 'Family Ties' with which he was involved. Fortunately, things were worked out for Fox and the rest is history!
6. Peter Weir made his American film directing debut in 1985 with 'Witness', and what a marvelous debut it was! What popular actor starred as Detective John Book in this thoughtful thriller?

Answer: Harrison Ford

Australian director Peter Weir had done nice work with films such as 'Picnic at Hanging Rock' and 'The Last Wave' before coming to America and making a big splash in 1985. He would continue his string of good films with 'Dead Poets Society' and 'Master and Commander: The Far Side of the World', among others, following 'Witness'.
7. You've heard of 'Spaghetti Westerns' from Italian directors, but have you ever seen a 'Noodle Western'? The 'first Noodle Western', namely 'Tampopo' emerged in theaters in 1985. A funny film replete with references to all manner of delicious consumables, in what country was this delicious film made?

Answer: Japan

'Tampopo' was directed by Juzo Itami, and starred Tsutomu Yamazaki, Nobuko Miyamoto and Ken Watanabe (who you may have heard of from 'The Last Samurai' and 'Batman Begins'). This film is guaranteed to charm and delight anyone who cares to watch it.
8. 'A Room with a View' is sometimes considered to be the very best of the Merchant/Ivory produced movies, and it's certainly hard to argue with those who make this claim. A beautiful, sensuous movie, the story is based both in England and in what Italian city?

Answer: Florence

An exploration of the somewhat stuffy turn-of-the-century Edwardian culture in England, this movie is based on the same-named book by E.M. Forster. Maggie Smith, Judi Dench, Helena Bonham Carter, Daniel Day-Lewis and several other terrific actors star in this lavishly produced film.
9. In what mesmerizing 1985 film starring Raul Julia and William Hurt do two men share a cell in an Argentine prison, learning to respect one another despite coming from entirely different walks of life?

Answer: Kiss of the Spider Woman

'Kiss of the Spider Woman' was directed by Hector Babenco. William Hurt plays Luis Molina, a man imprisoned for his homosexuality. Raul Julia is Valentin Arregui, a political prisoner. Hurt won his Best Actor Oscar for this role.
10. 'Re-Animator' was one of the most bizarre and gruesome horror films of the 1980s, but it was also one of the very best. Innovative and often funny, off of what classic horror author's story was this film based?

Answer: H.P. Lovecraft

Directed by Stuart Gordon, 'Re-Animator' was a signal film in the horror genre. A sign of things to come in high-tech Hollywood, this bizarre film ushered in the new 'horror-comedy' genre. Jeffrey Combs is terrific as the demented Herbert West in this film that does true justice to the Lovecraft tale.
