In 1988, my wife and I had just bought our first home together, and luckily there was a brand new movie theater close by, where we saw many good films. Here are ten of my favorites from that year.

Andy and Elizabeth Farmer (Chevy Chase, Madolyn Smith) move to Redbud, Vermont from New York City, where Andy plans to write a book. The couple have problems adjusting, Andy's book is awful, and after Elizabeth publishes a children's book, the couple decide to divorce and sell their house, asking for help in the endeavor from the quirky townspeople.

A construction worker, living in a shanty town whose residents are fed by a church, overhears a blind preacher and the camp's leader talking about a resistance movement. When he puts on a pair of sunglasses he found in the church, he discovers that aliens are using electronic signals and subliminal messages to control humankind.

He and his co-worker join the resistance to expose the truth.

Illinois state mental patient John Burns intercepts a call while in Dr. Baird's office, offering Baird a stint substituting for Dr. George Maitlin on his popular Los Angeles radio show. Burns escapes, goes to L.A., and pretends to be Baird, planning to get a handsome fee from Maitlin and head for Mexico.

The scheme falls apart when the real Baird meets Maitlin while at a conference in London.

An agent persuades a deputy's wife to talk, and other agents using questionable tactics learn the truth, leading to the arrest of several suspects. This film is based on true events.
